HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

After a late night, I arise thinking that an era has come to an end. The time when kids came to play for and love a college team is over. Kids will choose a team that gives them the best shot at the pros, or playing time if that isn’t an option. Change a few assistant coaches and Ohio State will remain an elite team under Day, if he can keep the money rolling in. That said, this was his big chance and he and his coaches blew The Game and he may never see money again like he got this year.

I do not believe that this Ohio State team can win a national championship, too many injuries in key positions. That’s really sad because a lot of those kids think about Ohio State just the way we used to. They gave their hearts and souls.

When I think about it, I think it is way too early to be thinking about what needs to be done. The big question in my mind is, is it the era of college football , fan expectations, or the fact that I invest so much of myself and my identity into the outcome of a game a bunch of kids play 8,500 miles awayon the banks of the Olentangy?
i've been thinking about things along the same lines... questions of a kind of one-sided allegiance (one fan to players / coaches) and identity and thousands of hours invested for what?

what i've concluded is that, for me, in my bubble, it's just about the connection to a group of other likeminded (give or take) people who share a common interest and "hobby", a way to stay connected with a place where i spent some of the best and most formative years of my life, and a way to distract myself from some of the ugly and too-serious realities of life.

and i will not concede that fun and that real sense of connection over to somebody like a ryan day, or a chip kelly, or some teenage kid, or a jimmah harbaugh or a joel klatt or whoever.

After a late night, I arise thinking that an era has come to an end. The time when kids came to play for a college team loved since their toddler years is over. There is nothing new about kids choosing a team that gives them the best shot at the pros, or playing time if that isn’t an option. But those questions now have a much more serious impact in the NIL era. Things are much more driven by money and it feels a lot different to players, coaches, and fans.

There is a reason why Nick Saban left coaching on a sour note, as he did. There is a reason why Coach Day has such large bags under his eyes. The nature and content of the college football head coach’s job has changed remarkably…and for the worse. Great pay package, crap job period

I also don’t believe that this head coach can beat TCUN. In fact, I think his sphincter muscle is probably so tight that he may not be able to go to the bathroom for days. The play calling yesterday is inexplicable, unless Howard is injured. Ohio State saw exactly how to take TCUN apart in the last drive of the first half.

I found myself screaming at the television to go up tempo and throw the ball. It is never a good idea to invest yourself so deeply into something you cannot control.

When I think about it, I think it is way too early to be thinking about what needs to be done. I do think that Bjork will be wise to start thinking a bit more rigorously about potential replacements than he might normally in the course of business.

The big question in my mind is, is it the era of college football , unrealistic fan expectations, or the fact that I invest so much of myself and my identity into the outcome of a game a bunch of kids play 8,500 miles away on the banks of the Olentangy?

I think the Michigan result is the culmination of what has been a pretty terrible year, through and through.

We were lucky to beat a very average Nebraska team starting a true Frosh QB.

We slept walked in the first half against a very game Marshall.

Indiana was going poorly until their punt unit decided it didn’t want to play.

The Oregon game was horribly game planned and awful clock management.

The Penn State game was a solid win but it’s not as if we played well. We won bc James Franklin shits down his legs.

We even showed a lot of warts against Akron.

Like, this season has been ridiculously saddled with uneven play and a team that generally sleep walks through long stretches of play.

I cannot point to a single game where I believe Ohio State played well in all (3) facets of the game. Call me spoiled, but with a roster this stacked, it’s just been excuse after excuse for what has been mediocre play with a loaded roster. The familiar “we want to be playing our best football at end of year” was the common mantra for why we’ve seen such sloppy and uninspired football all season. Well, November has come and gone, and this team still hasn’t even come close to playing up to its ability.

That starts and ends with Day.

Tired of the excuses and fake bravado. The culture is broken inside the WHAC. New leadership is needed ASAP. I’d honestly consider firing Day on Monday, and let Hartline be the interim HC going into playoffs…sounds crazy, but this team needs a shock.

If Hartline performs well let him take the reins going into 2025. If it’s a bit of a shitshow, open up a wide coaching search….I don’t really care to be honest. I’d just prefer Day to not be on the sidelines going into the playoffs. He’s more of a detriment than an asset at this point…..

Nothing, to be quite honest.

But I believe that Day has a better chance to "luck into" a national championship (a al Ed Orgeron or Les Miles or Gene Chizek or Jimbo Fisher) than any other potential HC candidate. Stay the course and hope for the best versus blow it all up and expect the worst. Neither is a great option but I will go with the former until I am absolutely forced into the latter.
If Day was going to luck into a NC, he would have done it already. IMO the Georgia game was his last realistic chance. He's been here too long.

the question, then, is whar would it take for you to feel like you've been "forced into the latter"? what isn't broken now that needs yet to break open for everyone to see?

I hope you guys are wrong about players and coaches fighting.
why? if you were a player in that game, knowing what you were capable of, but not being let loose by your coaches, to finally redeem your name an dignity and sense of self-worth, how would you react?

yeah, the players are making bank, but nowhere in the stratosphere that the coaches are making to put them in positions to show what they can do to succeed.

i'd be pissed to. i'd revolt and lash out too. it's not complicated. most of us have felt this way at work, wanting to fire-bomb the clowns in the c-suite fumbling away our futures and our welfare.
