Meet Ryan Day, the coach tasked with keeping Ohio State perfect while Urban Meyer serves his suspension

Long before he’d climbed the ladder for his serendipitous chance to be the interim head coach at Ohio State, Ryan Day was a 20-something graduate assistant at Boston College who carried a quiet confidence.

Former Eagles coach Tom O’Brien recalled his young graduate assistant approaching him amid a chaotic moment in the fourth quarter of the Continental Tire Bowl in 2004 after Boston College’s starting quarterback broke his leg. “Coach, how about the fake field goal here?”

With Boston College clinging to a three-point lead against North Carolina, O’Brien was attempting to rally the team on the sideline as Paul Peterson was being carted off on a stretcher. O’Brien seized on his young GA’s advice, and a back-up quarterback named Matt Ryan handed off to kicker Ryan Ohliger on a fourth-and-2. Ohliger scooted 21 yards for the touchdown that sealed a 37-24 victory.

“It was the perfect call at the perfect time,” O’Brien said in a phone interview on Thursday. “Ryan was always thinking ahead.”

This summer, Day, 39, has found himself in the middle of different type of frenzy. With Ohio State coach Urban Meyer missing for all of summer camp and suspended for Ohio State’s first three games, Day has inherited perhaps the highest-profile interim coaching job in recent college football history.

The Ups And Downs Of Ryan Day’s Emotional Debut

Ryan-Day-Carmen-Ohio-1.jpg

In many ways, Ryan Day’s first game as a head coach could not have gone much better.

His Buckeyes not only won, but put up 77 points against Oregon State.

Day, who also serves as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, saw first-time starter Dwayne Haskins throw for 313 yards and five touchdowns.

However, he said one of the highlights of the experience came even before he got to the stadium.

“The support that we all felt going into the Skull Session was really awesome,” Day said.

“Just the support that I felt and this team felt walking from the Skull Session to the stadium was really, really cool. And you could feel it and it was emotional.”

Once he got to Ohio Stadium, Day never looked overwhelmed on the sidelines. But there was a moment before the game that the magnitude of his new position really hit him.

“Standing in the tunnel and looking up at Ohio State and the Horseshoe, about to run out with the team,” Day said. “I looked over at (assistant director of football operations) Quinn (Tempel), and I’m like: ‘We really doing this?’ He said yeah. And I had a smile on my face and ran out.”

Day had a lot of responsibilities to juggle during the game, including calling plays, and managing the team. However, he said it never got too overwhelming, especially since he had a couple former head coaches to assist him.

“Got a lot of help from a lot of people. Obviously Greg (Schiano) and Kevin (Wilson) and the guys on the staff,” Day said.

RYAN DAY SAYS “THINGS ARE BACK TO NORMAL” AS URBAN MEYER RETURNS TO WORK AT OHIO STATE

Urban Meyer is back – for the most part.

Ohio State’s head football coach was allowed to return to work on Monday, arriving at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center before 6:30 a.m., as the first portion of his suspension came to an end.

According to acting head coach Ryan Day, there was “a lot of embracing” between Meyer and the other coaches – who hadn’t been allowed to communicate with him during his suspension – as he returned to the office and held his first meeting back with his staff.

“Things are back to normal,” Day said Monday. “Obviously he won’t be there for game day, but everything else is back to normal.”

Meyer still won’t be allowed to coach in either of the Buckeyes’ next two games against Rutgers or TCU, so Day will continue to serve as acting head coach for the next two weeks. Meyer also won’t be meeting with the media, as he normally does on Mondays and multiple other times during the week, until after his three-game suspension, so Day is filling in on his media responsibilities as well fo the next two weeks.

Outside of the next two Saturdays, though, Meyer is now able to resume his head coaching responsibilities, so from the other coaches’ perspectives, things are back to normal in terms of how they prepare for this week’s game against the Scarlet Knights (3:40 p.m., BTN).

“So much of coaching is done during the week,” Day said. “The game planning, the decisions that are made up to the game, is really when most of the coaching is done. And then once we get on the field, the game plan’s in, and now it’s just a matter of calling the plays and kind of going from there. So yeah, it’s kind of Coach is back, we’re going with Coach, and then once we get to the game, the decisions are almost made before we get there.”
