HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

On a staff that includes two other former head coaches its Day that got the acting HC gig.... hmmmm
Figured Day would be a good interim considering both Schiano's and Wilson's background. Wouldn't even be surprised if Day gets promoted to full time HC if this situation with Urban goes south and he does a good job with the team this year. Who knows? It's just too early to tell although I would love to have Campbell come in and take over after this year.

Schiano has dirt attached to him via Penn State. Kevin Wilson has dirt attached to him via Indiana.

Day has zero dirt attached to him from anywhere.

It makes perfect sense.

Edit: Campbell's buyout clause matters. If he leaves, he, or rather, the next employer owes Iowa State the remainder of the contract. I don't care how hot of a commodity he is. No one is worth that kind of up front money.

True, but none of that dirt is particularly significant, in that Ohio State vetted them and hired them anyway.

I get you, but perception is reality. They were hired as assistant coaches, NOT as The Face of The Ohio State University. IF Urban is fired over these allegations, and one of them is promoted, what does that do for the perception? It's gotta be a clean break. Fick was the interim in '11 for the same reason that Day is the interim in '18.

I don't mean to quibble, but was Day hired by someone other that Meyer? Did I miss the part where he came on as QB's coach, face of Ohio State in waiting? Not sure how giving the reigns to Day represents any clean break as you're describing it.

In any case, I remain hopeful that the elevation is very temporary and Urban gets back in the driver's seat pronto.

Day is a place holder if Urban goes next year will be a new coach and a clean slate of assistants. Just because ..
I doubt these decisions are made on the basis of "just because." If Meyer is let go, Day will be auditioning for the permanent job, just like Fickell was in 2011. And, just like Fickell in 2011, whether he gets it will likely depend largely on the team's record.

If I'm being honest, I read it as a signal that they expect Urban to be back at the helm soon enough.
Interesting take and I can see that... I admit I was very confused by appointing Day.

Also bucknuts morning 5 made a good point... Why allow UFM to make a comment if he's not coming back?

I'm 50/50 on whether UFM will be fired. I'm starting to lean a little to him keeping his job as every hour goes by though and honestly I wouldn't be shocked if that's another reason for the Administrative leave.

I, like everyone else, hate that this is going on, but I like what UFM has been doing with (some of) the assistants lately. Day and Grinch and Hartline (all young and talented) are here because someone was thinking about a succession plan. If it happens that Urban's gone, it accelerates but doesn't necessarily have to change that plan. We're in far better shape overall than when Tressel left.

For the coming season, most certainly. For one, we don't have Joe Bauserman as the presumptive starter with only a very raw true-frosh as the fall-back. This coaching staff is also infinitely more talented/dynamic than 2011...particularly on offense. That said, I'm not one to jump headlong into speculation when we don't have any firm idea of what's going to happen, so I'll hold off on discussions of a Ryan Day regime until it becomes necessary.

Urban had very little to do with the defense. That staff is intact.
Urban had a lot to do with an iffy special teams unit. Not a lot of room to go down there (especially with his achilles heel removed via rule change).
Urban had a lot to do with the offense, both good and bad. Many were hoping JT's departure would force Urban to evolve more into what Day/Wilson would like to do with RPO schemes. I think we may very well see that.

The fallout would be in recruiting more than short term, on the field results.
