HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

Meant to come straight to this thread...I honestly wanted to see him sit after the second fumble and drop. Not because he is a bad player, but because he was a very good player having a bad night. But it made me very happy to see him redeem himself tonight. He is a great player and a very good kid, so happy to see him rebound and play well when we needed him with two HUGE catches. Keep it up Dontre.

This kid wanted to have such a big game that he kind of got in his own way. I still believe he'll be very good but all hype put on him early on has to be a heavy burden at times. And not to mention a guy who wad supposed to only spell you (Marshall) is now out playing you. Wilson will find a way to make some big plays yet again this season. Its crazy how much speed and talent OSU has now. A friend of mine tried to tell me that FSU still had more speed than us, I just had to pad him on the shoulder and keep myself from laughing so hard in his face.

Exactly. We thought Wilson was going to be a star of the offense. He has turned out to be JUST another great receiver in our corps. That's a pretty awesome just. Just one more weapon, one more option. That is part of being a great team, there are so many viable options to get the ball EVERY PLAY. We have 7 guys on the offense on every snap that are weapons with the ball. Smith, Thomas, Wilson, Marshall, Samuel, EZE, Spencer, don't forget JT..... and the list keeps going. They are all turning into elite weapons. Seniors are finally developed, the young players are hugely talented. This is the first time I've seen our offense that has more than 2-3 weapons. There aren't many teams in america that have more than 2-3 elite weapons. Dontre is simply one of those weapons, and that's huge. On most other teams in america these guys will be the star, here they are part of a great team.

Dontre made a hell of a recovery from a rough start. Glad he's an Ohio State Buckeye!

Yeah me too.

But just sayin': I'll bet if Dontre would look in his rear view (i.e. on the depth chart) he'd see Jalin Marshall gaining on him for all three positions (WR, KR, and PR. Needless to say, "competition is good" it makes everyone better.

Marshall has all of two kick returns on the year, and Spencer and Samuel seem to be the backup options with Rod Jones gone. I need a bit to look up the snaps for each guy on the year but Wilson averages about 1.75 more yards per touch from scrimmage. Punt returns seem to be Marshall's now, though Penn State was a debacle and I'm surprised Urban didn't rip his head off for mouthing off after Greene's fumble. I see Wilson and Marshall as complements to each other...amazing how much talent we're getting out of the 2013 class in their 1st/2nd seasons.

Although recruiting doesn't always go as it looks on paper...but on paper, the 2013 class was likely the best I have seen here in terms of talent and balance. I remember looking at our commitment list on signing day and just being ecstatic. Dontre was one of the last minute jewels of the class, along with keeping Zeke in the class and getting Vonn Bell. Hard to imagine this team now without those guys.

I don't think Wilson will ever be a pure #1 WR, he won't break any receiving records, and maybe he won't be the next Percy Harvin either. I think though he could finish as a mirrored imaged of Chris Gamble, a game-breaking athlete that every team up must account for in different looks.

When I find a Rod Jones highlight I'm going to miss him.

Wat? Chris Gamble's soph season, he was playing 120 snaps a game, and the switch to D was probably the single most important factor in the national championship.

Ginn is the fastest player I've ever seen in pads.

When it comes to MVPs, Chris Gamble in 2002, is probably the most valuable mvp in my life time.

Dontre was never brought in OSU to be a #1 WR, and heck he wouldn't have been at Oregon either. He's a guy who gets the ball in space in a mismatch and uses his shiftiness and quicks to make something happen. He's a hybrid that you just get on the field and find ways to get him the ball, and he needs creative coaches to make him successful. But I doubt he'll ever be a guy comparable to Chris Gamble, IMO, two very different players.

Echo all the above that were glad that Dontre had a chance to 'make up' his blows. Especially happy that UFM played him, although he could have put him on the pine. Jalin could have done everything (and throw) that Dontre did, but UFM played him regardless of the fumbles, and the kid redeemed himself. Good for him, and good for tOSU. The future is bright.

Im saying that they are players that you must be aware of because of their versatility and different uses on the field. They both excel at being athletic speed demons. I agree that Gamble was an important player and I think that Wilson's play making abilities will be needed as well.
