Having been around Yahoo's college football discussion board for a long time, and because that's more global than a place like BP - which is clearly focused on OSU, for example - I can say that OSU wasn't "hated" until they won the NC.
Teams that are "hated" (largely due to their fans arrogance, general stupidity, or lack of knowledge (Goof, or Iron, feel free to back me up or disagree with my assessment of the yoohoo's)
Miami - arrogance - no recognition of what tradition in football really is. Refuse to consider anything prior to 1983 as at all interesting
Oklahoma - Stupidity - too much "Boomer Sooner" without comment
OSU - since 2002, not before - and its generally 'cause OSU wins ugly, not because the fans are assholes or anything (although, there are some, of course)
South Carolina - "Cocks" says it all. I honestly believe most of these people could care less about football. They're in it for the cool "Cocks" hat.
Notre Dame - Bandwagon, out of the woodwork types... they tend to think they'll win the NC every year, despite reality and then once ND loses, their fans abandon ship
Nebraska - Arrogance
Arkansas - Arrogance - strangly enough - seem to have no idea that Arkansas hasn't been a "player" since 1965
Michigan - kinda like ND people.. big talk til their first loss, then it's all excuses
Alabama - How many times can you read "Roll Tide" before you get sick of it? Can't reason with them regarding their "12 national championships"
Florida - Fans can't or won't be rational about the Gator's strengths and weaknesses. Makes excuses... a lot of excuses.
Any C-USA Team - Feel cheated, have to talk up their squad, refuse to listen to reason. Think teams like Louisville could whip any "big" school
Washington - If I had a dollar for all the times I've seen a Washington fan make asinine remarks, I'd be retired. Not saying much these days.
Teams that are generally ignored or otherwise not hated-
Tennessee - Passionate about their Vols, but generally willing to have an honest chit chat about football.
Auburn - A lot of "War Eagle" and "Damn Tiger" with no substance, but there just aren't enough of these types to go very far
LSU - People used to feel as though LSU was just an also ran.. with good reason, since they went 10 years plus longer than OSU between titles. Good natured, and usually reasonable.
USC - Even despite "split" title, and various other things that can be harped on, these people tend to take a good ribbing, arent particularly arrogant - though there are some, of course, and tend to be reasonable when discussing teams that aren't USC.
FSU - In recent years, the FSU mainstays have chilled, seemingly worried that a PSU type fall awaits their possible hanger-on
PSU - People just feel sorry for the PSU-ites.
Those are just some quick hitter impressions...
Back on topic, I think whoever said it was not a bias, but more because OSU isn't flashy is right. Offense sells (or so the media thinks) but Defense wins championships.
