Harrison remark, Intentional?

That seems pretty racist of you.

I'm not talking about a black person using it the way Harrison did vs a white person using it the way somebody would in the 1800s. I'm talking about the intent. You should be offended when a person of any race uses the word in a derogatory manner. Why even define white vs black vs asian vs whatever if the intent is the same?

It's not the same. Some people still use the term like it was used in the 1800s. And it does piss me off a lot more than Andrew Harrison using it. I'm sorry that you want it to be the same.

And I'm sorry that you're too blind to see what I'm saying. Fuck you for implying whatever stupid thing it is that you're implying.

YOU'RE the one who tried to say it's worse for a white person to say the word in a derogatory fashion. Why would it be any less offensive for non-white person to say it in that same derogatory fashion? If the intent is derogatory, who gives a shit what color skin the person who is saying it has? Other than you, apparently.

Unless you think ONLY white people say it in a derogatory fashion? And only black people use it in the way Harrison did.

I think it's pretty bad and prima facie evidence of 1800s (and 1960s) intent when a white person says the word in a derogatory fashion about a black person.

And let's not kid ourselves. Harrison didn't say it as a compliment.

That's the point though in response to the post which started this thread. The original post was complaining that Andrew Harrison wasn't being treated the same as a white person would be treated under the same circumstances, as if to suggest that somehow there should be an equal reaction.

Well, certainly context matters. If we take the SAE Oklahoma thing, the context is kind of 8 out of 10 bad for 2015 (and I have to be really creative to figure out what that there are a 9 and 10, and it wasn't a pleasant intellectual exercise). Having said that if the intent of the word is to denigrate or dehumanize, it does only change as to degree. The problem with saying its racist when a racist person says it is, then it gets to intent. I can't know what Harrison's intent was, but if he's just saying it out of anger or frustration, I'm not sure that's any better.

As to overreactions... I mean, in this case and the OK SAE case, I mean how much reaction we should give to 19 year olds at all, but given the stage, and lack of knowledge or their real intent, I'd say Harrison's judgement is quite a bit worse.... He knew the camera's were rolling.

It concerns me because I view the "double standard" argument as a tacit defense of white people calling black people the n-word. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "Well, if they're going to call themselves that, why is it wrong for me to call them that?" Or the classic, "there's a difference between a black person and a n----."
I haven't seen anyone here trying to validate a white person calling someone else a n-----r. My point has been that since the word is so heinous, no one should use it, and not that "since blacks can use it so can whites." I fail to see why you either can't, or refuse, to see that distinction...

WHEN ANY PERSON SAYS IT ABOUT ANY PERSON IN A DEROGATORY FASHION.

jesus.
There is a clear distinction whether you like it or not and it stems from slavery in the United States. If you don't like that, well, see my response below.

I think it's fairly accepted that black people have embraced the n word as a way of owning it and "taking it away" from white people.

The fact that white people apparently get so upset about that validates why it was embraced in the first place.

It is pretty funny watching everyone get so upset about it. Waaaaa, we're not allowed to use a word that other people are.

If there is going to be a debate about whether it is acceptable to use in the African American community, no matter what context, that conversation can continue to play out within the community.

In the mean time, white people can, to borrow a phrase from Bo Ryan, deal with it.

I don't know what is so difficult to understand about what I'm saying. There's a difference between the word that Harrison said and the word Bruce Willis wears in Harlem in Die Hard 3. But OH10's comment was that he takes issue with WHITE PEOPLE using the Die Hard 3 word in a derogatory fashion. Why wouldn't you take exactly as much offense to the word being used in a derogatory fashion by a black man? Or a guy from China? Or a lady from India? If the word is being used to demean...who fucking cares what color skin the person saying it has?

Every black person I know over the age of 40 does not use the word and they all hate that it is used at all, especially by fellow blacks. They are pissed that young blacks think that by using it "takes it away" from anyone. If you're so stupid to think that's the case, then there's no use talking to you about it.
