Perhaps I should talk about a specific case. Suppose the ball is touching your own goal line because you have just made a goal line stand on 4th and inches. Would you try and draw the defense offsides? The possible benifit is a 5 yard penalty that results in a first and 5 on the 5 yard line. The possible cost is a zero yard penalty because you can't possibly move any closer to the goal. In this case it makes perfect sense to risk a zero yard penalty for a chance of a first and 5 from the 5 yard line. Do teams ever do things like this? Are they pussies? Didn't New England do something simular last year during the playoffs? They had 4th and less then five from the 35 yard line. The lined up to kick a field goal and had a lineman make an unusual but legal shift. The oppents jumped offsides because of the shift and New England got the first down. I don't think they would have kick a field goal. I think they would have taken a delay of game penalty if the opponent hadn't jumped offsides. They were just trying to draw a penalty, those pussy world champs that they are. The next part of my question is if you don't get the penalty on the first play do you repeat the process until a penalty is called? I have learned today that the answer is no because of Article 3, section b.

the patriots would probably have done that once...then punted. youre suggesting the team with the ball on the goal line would just keep taking the penalty over and over.

aside from the terrible example...you say that the defense will eventually jump offsides. well genius, thats 5 yards. now its first and 5 on the 5. youre still in the shadow of your own goal posts. then your idiotic "take a penalty" play will put you back on the 2, then the 1, then the half............

Alright, douche-nozzle, explain to us "unenlightened" why exactly it is a "statistical necessity" that the defense will commit a penalty. Not that the phrase "statistical necessity" even makes sense here, but I get what you're trying to say. It's just that what you're trying to say makes about as much sense as you posting here in the first place.....none at all.

No, it doesn't make any sense at all. You're still trying to justify the offense committing multiple penalties by ASSUMING the defense will commit a penalty. And this isn't exactly "thinking so far out of the box". It is more commonly referred to as "thinking with your head up your ass."

Yeah, teams do stuff like this all the time. But that wasn't your original question. There's nothing wrong with taking a shot at a penalty....but committing a penalty over and over? Also, in this little dumbass hypothetical situation you've concocted, let's just say it works, and now you have the ball 1st and 5 on your own five yard line. What do you do now? Refer back to your original question, which was to commit multiple penalties if you have the ball on your own five yard line? :slappy:

Do you even watch football? Trying to draw the defense offsides is a normal occurrence. Committing multiple penalties which would do nothing but eventually force you to punt from the back of your own endzone is just idiotic (like your posts). And, since you apparently can't read either, no, you wouldn't be forced to punt on first down. But you would be forced to punt, eventually. Or, considering the rules, maybe the ref would just pull your faggoty shirt over your faggoty head and kick your faggoty ass for being such a pussy.

Do you guys get stuck in the shower when you are washing your hair? The instructions on the shampoo say lather, rinse and repeat. How do you ever get out of the shower if you keep repeating washing your hair? The same logic that allows you to stop washing your hair applies for multiple penalties on your own goal line. Once you move out to the five yard line you no longer commint penalties. Why? Becuase you are PAST the five yard line.

What is a statistical necessity? When I was getting my undergraduate degree in Physics (at Adolfius Smith Lab at The Ohio State University) I heard the following explanation during my thermodynamics course. If their is an infinite number of chances of event with finite probability occurring than the event will occur. The event is a statistical necessity. In football terms, if you get to try an infinite number of times to get the defense to commit a penalty the defense will eventually commit a penalty. How do you get to try an infinate number of times? You get to try an ifinate number of times if you are within the five yard line (notice <5, not < or = to 5) and the only penalty you get is half the distance to the goal. You will eventually get positive yardage in the exchange. Notice in this situation there is no mention of loss of downs or forfeiture of the game. If you want to slam me that’s fine but at least read and understand the question. The NCAA rules committee realized that the issue of multiple penalties resulting in half the distance to the goal was an interesting loophole and wrote a sections that specifically addressed this issue.


Here is another question for you all. What is the indefinite integral of d(cabin)/cabin? That’s right, a natural log cabin. If you don’t get this joke perhaps you don’t understand infinity as well as you think you do. In that case, I can understand your confusion over a question that, at its core, addresses infinity.
