Everybody a loser in Ohio State's disgusting 'victory' - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- This was revolting. Ohio State won the game, the Big Ten title and a spot in the Rose Bowl -- but what did the Buckeyes lose? And can they ever get it back?

Ohio State blew a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter, then was too spooked by its own shadow to go for the win late in regulation, or to go for anything but a long field goal in overtime. Luckily for the Buckeyes that field goal, a career-long 39-yarder by replacement kicker Devin Barclay, was good. Luckily for the Buckeyes, they beat Iowa 27-24 on Saturday.

Ohio State won on the field. But everywhere else, Ohio State lost. Its rock-solid reputation? Its badass mojo? Gone. The only less impressive "winner" than Ohio State on Saturday was the Big Ten, which is worse than anyone thought -- and most of us thought it was pretty bad -- if this squeamish, gutless bunch of Buckeyes is the best the conference has to offer. Maybe next year the Rose Bowl should court the champion from the MAC. Or the best team in Division I-AA. Anyone but the Big Ten, if this is what Big Ten football is all about.

Suggestion for the Big Ten banner: a white flag.

Because both teams -- but most egregiously Ohio State -- quit

And I'll give a pass to Iowa for quitting late in regulation, although that's exactly what the Hawkeyes did. They had the ball at their 33 with 52 seconds and two timeouts left, and they were on the road, and they had a kicker who already had missed a 22-yard field goal and therefore was no sure thing to make a kick in overtime -- and still they didn't try to win in regulation. On first down Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz called a run up the middle, and when it went nowhere, he chose to run out the clock.

Disgusting, in most circumstances -- but again, I'll give Iowa a pass here. The Hawkeyes had come too far, rallying from a 24-10 deficit in the final 11 minutes, to risk a loss in regulation, especially with previously reliable fill-in quarterback James Vandenberg channeling his erratic inner Ricky Stanzi in the fourth quarter. After playing so solidly for three quarters, Vandenberg couldn't be trusted by his coaches, not even to move the team 35 or 40 yards to get Iowa into possible field-goal range. Iowa quit late in regulation, but I'm not offended by it.

Ohio State quit, and I'm disgusted by it.

After regurgitating that 24-10 lead in the fourth quarter -- first on a 99-yard kickoff return by Iowa's Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, then on a 70-yard Iowa scoring drive in which Ohio State blew two golden interception opportunities -- Ohio State had the ball on its 18 with 2:37 and multiple timeouts left. And the Buckeyes didn't try to win it.

OSU coach Rush Limbaugh Jim Tressel called for three conservative running plays, then two passes that netted a total of zero yards. Between plays, the Buckeyes were in no hurry to snap the ball. Part of me wondered if Tressel knew the score. Did he think his team was winning?

Apparently not. Tressel described his thought process entering that drive like so:

"We knew the one thing we couldn't do was turn the ball over and give them the chance to beat us in regulation," Tressel said. "If we could pop something, so be it. But otherwise, we'd have to go beat them in overtime."

If we could pop something, so be it?

So be it?

Rousing words. Sign me up to play for Jim Tressel. Or better yet, let me use my training as a writer to join the OSU team as a slogan writer:

Play for Ohio State, where if we win a game late in regulation ... so be it!

Disgusting. And don't attack me now, Ohio State fans. Don't go there, because I'm onto you. I heard you. You were booing on Saturday, all 105,455 of you. That was the attendance at Ohio Stadium, and you were in agreement that Tressel's strategy in the final 2? minutes of regulation was an embarrassment. So don't tell me I'm being mean here. You hated Tressel's strategy as you saw it unfold. Don't defend that gutlessness now.

The Buckeyes' strategy in overtime was every bit as gutless. After the OSU defense drove Iowa backward on its overtime possession -- forcing an up-for-grabs interception by Vandenberg on fourth-and-26 from the 41 -- the OSU offense basically took a knee three times before kicking the field goal. Three snaps, three dives into the teeth of the Iowa defense. Net gain: three yards.

Clearly, Tressel doesn't trust sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who was compared to Vince Young out of high school. I'm finally beginning to see the comparison -- but at least Vince Young waited until he got to the NFL before he got yanked. At this rate, I'm seriously wondering why Tressel bothers to let Pryor play at all. I see that Tressel has signed a quarterback in each of his past two recruiting classes. Maybe he has already recruited over Pryor. After watching the final minutes Saturday, it wouldn't surprise me.

As for Tressel's strategy to put the game on Barclay's foot ... Barclay had already missed Saturday from 47 yards, and for the season he was just 3 for 6 with a long field goal of 37 yards after replacing injured stud Aaron Pettrey two games ago. So by playing for a 39-yard field goal, Ohio State wasn't exactly making the percentage play.

Ohio State was playing for a second overtime, basically. I didn't think to ask Tressel about his OT strategy after the game, but I have a feeling I know exactly what he would have told me:

"If Barclay could make the kick," Tressel would have said, "so be it."

All you have to do is look at his picture to figure out he is a huge dbag. The funny thing is last year his picture made him look like a complete dork (and I hate using that word, but it's appropriate). He went out of his way to make himself to look like a badass. What a complete dbag with low self esteem.

Don't like the tone of the article, but I was with 12 Buckeye fans watching the game and the jist of their conversations pretty much mirrored the thoughts in that article. I have to say I was one that was screaming at the TV wondering why Ohio State wasn't trying to win the game with 2+ minutes left.

If Ohio State had lost that game in OT instead of winning it I think we'd see many posts on this board that mirrored the thoughts in that article as well.

While I am not happy with some of the decisions, and I was not happy with the USC game (I even got banned, yet proven 100% correct). His article is way off base.

Look, let's get one thing straight - you don't get banned for being incorrect ... you get banned for saying something, regardless of whether it proves to be correct or incorrect, in an unacceptable manner. I'm sure that you can understand the difference.

In your case, you were banned for calling Ohio State's play calling "horrible" and "really, really stupid" and "fucking stupid". LINK

And as far as being "proven 100% correct" ... Ohio State lost the Southern Cal game, that much is true. But you are attempting to infer from that one fact that your statement concerning the play calling was "100% correct". However, we don't know how well any hypothetical play call would have fared in any given situation, so we can't say whether result of that hypothetical play call would have been better, worse, or similar to the actual play call. To put my argument in language that you might understand, it's quite possible that a less conservative play call would have been even more "fucking stupid" and would have led to an even more "horrible" result than the "really, really stupid" play that Tressel actually called.

I hope that clears things up a bit....

As far as Doyel goes ... yeah, Gregg, I know that you had that "Ohio State can't win the big game" article already penned by Thursday afternoon, but then the Buckeyes showed you up by beating Iowa. So, you just modified it a little bit and made it into an "Ohio State can't win the big game big enough" article. Probably pretty similar to the article you wrote after Alabama beat unranked Tennessee 12-10 ... or when Florida beat unranked Arkansas 23-20 ... or after Cincinnati beat unranked UConn 47-45 ... maybe not.

So when a dog pisses on a fire hydrant, don't get mad at the dog, he's just being a dog.

Same with Doyel, he's a douche but it's not worth getting mad or anything. He's just being a douche. This is what douches do.

I'm shocked no one has posted the Pat Forde article yet actually. Maybe I've missed it.

Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes got it done their way - ESPN

You can tell Forde isn't a fan of Tresselball, but he gives credit where it is due and praises Ohio State for doing it their way.

Decent article, but at least it isn't a complete bashing of tOSU like the shit that Doyle wrote. I wouln't even call Doyle's writing an article, instead it seems much more like a personal Vendetta against Ohio State.

The thing that really disgusted me was how Doyle said we "quit". As someone else said in the game thread if we would have "quit" we wouldn't have won. Homan wouldn't have stuffed that run in the OT, Worthington wouldn't have made that crucial sack to push them out of FG range and ARuss wouldn't have gotten the INT to get us the ball back. It was clear Tressel wanted to do nothing other than get the FG and go home with a win and I am fine with that. If Barclay would have quit he could have sunk under the pressure after missing a FG earlier and caused us to go to another OT. But the team didn't quit and we sure as hell didn't loose. The last I checked it doesn't matter how you win, it's that you win.

"You don't worry about your three-game bowl losing streak, or your recent futility against ranked nonconference opponents, or the fact that being the best team in the Big Ten means being a cut below the best teams in the nation these days..."

Forde is a mind reader?

I suspect most of us including Forde have no idea what JT's thinking.

I don't really give a shit what any of the talking heads say anymore. Media these days has become overly arrogant and totally uninformative as they all are looking for any readership/viewership that they can garner, whether it be positive or negative. Some say that it is nothing more than "entertainment", but many of these "entertainers" try to pass themselves off as "journalists" and that, in my opinion, is where the problem lies. It has become nothing more than a "Look here, I am right so read/listen to me because I am so full of myself that my opinion is the only one that should be considered" and less than a "Look, here are the facts of the situation, here is what has happened to date, and here is what this humble reporter can editorialize from this but by no means makes it fact." These assholes actually think that their OPINION should be considered FACT.

I have honestly lost all respect for any sports columnist/talking head claiming to be a "journalist" because rumor, opinion and conjecture has replaced facts, analysis and actually reporting.

id call Doyle's article garbage journalism, more along the lines of something an amature blogger would right instead of a "professional"
