Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

I don't think so. You can't keep this defense much more simple than it is.

Schiano: I will play man to man behind a front that is going to wreak havoc. You will make some plays but so will my defense. In the end, my 11 will win out because I have the better athletes.

What happens when we don't have the better athletes? Hopefully he has more tricks in his bag and hopefully Grinch starts living up to the hype soon because his safeties aren't getting it done

2013, OSU defense was playing a lot of zone and getting torched at historic levels. Everyone was screaming for simple, tight press man coverage.

When you have an elite DL, which OSU recruits to have every year, you want to be able to play press man to make it as difficult as possible for the QB.

Downside is that there are going to be a lot of 50/50 balls when the QB does get time and you are going to lose some of them.

the 2018 issues are not scheme issues, they are individual player execution issues.

Coaches are responsible for both but first and foremost you must not waste time trying to solve the wrong problem.

^^^^^^This^^^^^^^

We basically gamble because we can, it is actually a good bet. When you play man as much as we do if a back breaks the LOS then you are going to give up a big play.

With that said, there is something to be said for some S's on this team taking some piss poor angles thinking they can run 4.2 40's which they apparently cannot even sniff from the looks of how fast they seem to get left behind.

Biggest thing I see that I would lay at the feet of the coaches is Buckeye pass defenders consistently going for the outside move and giving up the easier inside plays.

You shade a guy to the inside and don't bite on the outside move. Most QB's can't make that throw and it takes an extra step or two to get open. If they beat you, they beat you.

It's like leaving your feet to try and block a 3 in basketball which lets some schlub just dribble in and make a much higher percentage shot.

I would take the odds right now of any QB in CFB that OSU might have to face against the OSU DL and having to consistently hit a bunch of out routes.

As an aside; you saw the IU defender do it on one of Haskins TD's. Problem for them is Haskins can actually make that throw.

If Dre’mont was 100% or if Bosa was I’m there I’d be ok with 100 % press but I think they should mix it up. Make teams drive 70 yds ..then give it up in 3 plays. We have enough talent that 10 play drives won’t happen.

That's part of the philosophy of leading with offense vs defense though. They want the opponent to punt, turn it over or score but get the ball back asap.

You want the ball back so they can take the surest path to victory which is keep scoring. You don't want those time consuming drives against you.

180 degree different than Marty/Tresselball.

As long as turnovers and TFL's are happening the plan is working. Obviously the big scoring plays have to get shored up but the last thing in the world I think you'll see is a defense that encourages the other team to posses the ball.

Could be a good coach at Ohio State but good doesn’t cut it at Ohio State. Time to think about whether or not this is really working out.

Quite frankly this is the worst defense I’ve seen wearing scarlet and gray.

2013 defense was worse in terms of points per game, yards per game, average opponent QB rating and pretty much any other stat you could want to look at.

Which one was that? If it was 2016, then that was still Fickell's defense. How much of a part was that? I don't know. If he was a big part, then we should have seen the same success in the 2017 season.

Before we anoint Fickell with defensive sainthood let's please recall he was also part of some of the worst defensive play we have ever seen at OSU (see above)
