To Do List: Buckeye Safeties Coach Greg Schiano
Replacing Malik Hooker is one of those things that might sound possible because, you know,
all things are possible, but this one still seems like quite a stretch.
Of course, that's just one of the many things that safeties coach and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano has to take care of in preparation for the 2017 season. What else is on his list? We have some guesses.
1. Find a reasonable facsimile of Malik Hooker.
Yeah, this sounds like a long shot, but there is no doubt they'll be looking for somebody to step right in for one of Ohio State's best safeties ever. It might be asking a lot, but even if they only get to the warning track on this one, then that would still be pretty good. Is Hooker's reasonable facsimile Erick Smith? He's certainly due for his opportunity. Is it Jordan Fuller? He's got the athleticism. Even if they can't find someone similar, if they can at least get consistent play that can solidify the back end of the defense, that's a win. Replacing a pair of cornerbacks, however, makes this search a little more important than in years past. Plus, Urban Meyer hates it when an area on his team takes a step backward. Greg Schiano probably doesn't care for it much either.
2. Continue Damon Webb's steady rise.
You may still be judging Damon Webb's junior season based on the first half of the year where he certainly had some struggles in coverage, but he got better as the year went on -- or at least less noticeable. Remember, a year ago at this time he was still a cornerback, so these things take some time. Now that he is comfortable and has the hang of everything, it's time to put the finishing touches into the mix. Webb needs to go from solid starter to All-B1G this season. This is his final season in Columbus, which means that it should be his best. That's certainly Greg Schiano's goal.
