Paulus, a former Duke guard, was asked what Nov. 29 is going to be like for him when the Buckeyes host the Blue Devils in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

"Probably snowy," he said.

-- Paulus' parents are from Cleveland -- he said his father played basketball at Lakewood St. Edward and John Carroll University -- and he was born in Medina, Ohio. He moved to Appleton, Wis., when he was young and then to Syracuse, N.Y. for high school.

He said he knew before he went to college that he wanted to coach after he was done playing.

"It's my passion," he said.

A was noted in the Rumor Mill thread, Paulus seemed pretty active in talking with players on the bench last night, particularly Craft when he came off briefly after his third foul.

I guess on a staff where Chris Jent was once the only team manager in history with NBA head coaching experience, it shouldn't be surprising that a video coordinator is doing a little coaching. :wink: Thad's got a solid group.

Coach Thad Matta added former Duke point guard Greg Paulus to his staff a little more a week after it was announced in May that Ohio State would play Duke this season in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

It hasn?t been the coup most assumed it would be, Matta joked.

?We can?t get anything out of him. He won?t say a word,? Matta said. ?Coach (Dave) Dickerson told him, ?You drank the Kool-Aid too long.?  ?

In truth, Paulus, in his first year as video coordinator for the Buckeyes men?s basketball team, has done what he can to provide intelligence on his former team. Only three years removed from his time at Duke, he still has a former teammate with the Blue Devils (senior Miles Plumlee) and helped recruit a couple of other players.

BOSTON ? It?s after midnight in the early hours of Friday morning. Greg Paulus, clad in a shirt and tie, answers questions in the Ohio State locker room following the Buckeyes? win over Cincinnati to advance to the Elite Eight.

The reporters finally file out after the NCAA-allotted 30 minutes of interview time. Paulus? night is just beginning.

It?s after 2 p.m. later on in the day on Friday. Paulus, clad in an Ohio State sweat suit, stands in the same spot answering questions in the OSU locker room.

He likely hasn?t slept. He won?t divulge whether or not he made it to bed after last night?s win, saying only that he?s watched a lot of film between then and now.

Paulus doesn?t drink coffee. He stays away from it. But he admits that he had a couple Mountain Dews while breaking down tape of No. 1 Syracuse in advance of Saturday?s Elite Eight game. He calls it his ?kick? for when he needs a boost.

When the final buzzer sounded to seal the win over Cincinnati, less than 48 hours remained before the opening tip against Syracuse. Time cannot be wasted.

?It?s been really unique to see the game from this side,? Paulus said. ?As a player you see it one way, as a coach you see all the preparation, the different styles.?

Paulus is the Ohio State video coordinator for the men?s basketball team. Hired by OSU head coach Thad Matta in June of 2011, he?s since spent thousands of hours pouring over game tape. He wants to be a college basketball coach one day, hopefully sooner than later.

Since graduating from Duke in 2009, where Paulus played point guard for Mike Krzyzewski, he?s played one season of football at Syracuse and spent one season as an assistant basketball coach at Navy.

Now, in his first season with the Buckeyes, Paulus seems to have found a perfect mentor in Matta, a coach who recruited him out of high school. And he?s also found the perfect prot?g? in sophomore point guard Aaron Craft.

?He?s such a well-rounded young man,? Matta said. ?And the things that he?s been through at 25 years of age, not a lot of people can say that. I love having him around, and he?s done a tremendous job in his role for us.?

Former Duke guard Greg Paulus returns to Durham as Ohio State staffer

As a former Duke point guard, Greg Paulus said he never misses an opportunity to watch the Blue Devils play.

If they're on TV, he's watching. If not, he's checking the score at the first idle moment.

However, recently there's been one fairly major difference between Paulus' viewing habits and those of the average Duke fan. As the video coordinator for Ohio State, Paulus has been watching his former team in search of how to beat it.

In his second season on the staff of the fourth-ranked Buckeyes (4-0), Paulus will be on the visitors' bench when Ohio State visits Cameron Indoor Stadium to face No. 2 Duke (6-0) tonight. It will be just the second time he's been back to Duke for a basketball game since his career ended in 2009, and the first as a member of an opposing team's staff.

Of course, he hasn't spent too much time dwelling on his college memories this week.

"When there's still a lot to do in regards to trying to get ready to play Duke, there hasn't been that kind of reflection time yet," Paulus said. "I'm sure there will be as time gets a little bit closer. But right now, it's time to analyze, break down and try to make sure that I'm doing my part over here."

Paulus started 100 games in four seasons at Duke, averaging 8.6 points and 3.4 assists. He was the main option at point guard for his first three seasons until a knee injury and a lineup shuffle led to a reduced role as a senior.

After his Duke tenure ended, Paulus, who was a prep All-American quarterback, played a season of football at Syracuse and then returned to basketball as an assistant coach at Navy the following season. Ohio State coach Thad Matta, who Paulus said he got to know when the then-Xavier coach recruited him out of high school, added him to the Buckeyes' staff prior to the 2011-12 season.

I wonder whatever happened between Paulus and Coach K if anything. Being a Dookie I would have thought that he would have wanted to go back there and do some coaching or video work but instead Matta hired him.

I also wonder sometimes why Collins has never moved on. I wonder if he is just waiting for Coach K to fall over dead and I wonder if he has been promised the job if in fact he has not actively interviewed for a another coaching position.

I don't think it is anything negative. Coach K was very positive of Paulus when he went for his graduate program studies and to play football at Syracuse. You can only have so many graduate assistants, and a lot of Duke guys are willing to stay patient while those in front of them take next steps.

It isn't just Collins, but Steve Wojikowski and Johnny Dawkins as well. I think Dawkins is a lifer next to Coach K, but Collins and Wojo are set until an absolutely perfect situation comes calling. Guys like Quinn Snyder and Tommy Amaker fell flat on their face initially when they left the nest. Tommy Amaker has rebounded nicely at Harvard but the point remains...

Coaching under Coach K comes with a lot of perks as well (assistants on Olympic team probably being #1).

Anyways, my overall point would be Greg probably has a much better path to being employed as an assistant going the GA route at tOSU under Matta than at Duke, where they may not even have any openings. I feel like I've seen GA's at Duke for nearly a decade...no joke. Watch tonight as a guy wearing a blazer jumps off the Duke bench to clean sweat up off the floor.

You mean the Johnny Dawkins who coaches Stanford?
