Greg Paulus (HC Niagara University)

There's a pretty compelling sub-plot here as well. In addition to arriving at UM as the only competent QB on roster, his two brothers have been thinking about coming to Michigan as well. Chris, who recently left UCLA... and Jason, who left UM (to escape Mallett's shadow) to attend Stanford, who left Stanford. Neither played much at either school, despite many injuries at the QB position.

Jason is the more likely transfer possibility at this point, but I can't help but wonder if Tate assumed his bro(s) would be the only potential transfer competition, only to be blindsided by this. Tate is a better passer than those two, but Greg throws a wrench into the perception of things. While he's 4 years away from the game and a bit overrated in HS, RR is still talking with an all-star HS QB on the heels of a great spring (for a freshman) by Tate.

SIAP... Audio clip of Greg Paulus interviewed on Dan Patrick show...

http://mvictors.com/?p=3469

  1. Said interest initiated by Greg.
  2. When asked about interest from RR, talked about getting to know each other.
  3. Next step is to explore opportunities out there, in college or NFL (or basketball ).
  4. Other schools that contacted him, which he would not disclose, big east & big ten conferences involved. No ACC teams (:smash: Wake would be glorious).
  5. When asked if he could play at UM right now, said there was an opportunity there.
  6. Why not stay at Duke and play football... talked to them, Greg is a big fan of coach Cutcliffe. Wishy washy when asking if Cutcliffe was interested in him, hoped so.
  7. Made the right choice choosing bball over fball, especially for Coach K and Duke.
  8. Where would he have played CFB, would've taken visits, and UM was one of those.
  9. Packers worked him out at QB, will not play another position.
  10. No timeline for decision.
  11. Doesn't know UM's offense, would have to be a quick learning curve.

Any guesses on who the b10 team is? Could Greg's courtship ruffle feathers in AA, only to see him head to East Lansing?

That would be the best opening in the b10 besides UM, since PSU, OSU & ILL are full, and MSU has some decent WRs (especially if they can learn how to catch).

From what Dennis Dodd heard, it has to be somewhere that offers a Masters program that he couldn't get at Duke. And obviously, since this is an academic decision for Paulus, perhaps we should be comparing post-graduate programs rather than rosters. :wink2:

So either Tate is lying, Fraudriguez is lying, or Paulus is lying.

Another possibility is that RR told Paulus he could come to TSUN if he received the waiver from the NCAA; and that Paulus considered that an offer but RR didn't consider it an offer, but something conditional.

It's certainly possible, but with Tate's tone (in the above article) and being blindsided by this (rather than RR being upfront about it), I'm not sure he'll accept that distinction if Greg ends up at UM.

If this is more than just the media creating a story, it would make a third QB in 1.5 years that RR has not handled very well.

They're a family of nomads, quick to pull up stakes when things get tough. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Tater pulls the same stunt if he doesn't run away with the job.

So either Tate is lying, Fraudriguez is lying, or Paulus is lying.

More to the point, Michigan's starting QB does not sound confident that his coaches are not lying.

I want to believe my coaches, I committed (to) them. Why would a kid like him lie to national media?

I might not be getting the whole story from my coaches,

This speaks volumes.

Paulus was just on PTI for 5 min and said a whole lot of nothing (beyond what we've read). I was hoping to hear a definitive answer on whether RR officially told him he had a spot.

He's probably been told to keep it hush-hush.

Somebody needs to teach that kid some public speaking, I don't think I've ever heard a more ridiculous "uh" to actual word ratio in my life...

Close.

U-M hasn't offered Greg Paulus a football scholarship

Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News

Former Duke point guard Greg Paulus has not been offered a football scholarship from Michigan, school officials said Thursday.
He has been offered, however, a chance to join the team and compete this fall for the quarterback job.
Michigan does have three available scholarships. Offering one to Paulus could be a strong possibility if he goes through the NCAA process of petitioning for the year of football as a graduate student.

Paulus, during a teleconference Thursday with reporters, said he did not throw or work out for coach Rich Rodriguez during a visit to Michigan's final spring practice Tuesday, but he said it was "helpful" to meet Rodriguez and see the offense in person. He said Rodriguez offered a scholarship for the fall.
For clarity, the end of the article is what Paulus claimed, a separate subject from what Angelique (UM's lead beat writer) heard from UM directly.

Either way, it seems like there was a failure to communicate here. That was the criticism with how Mallett & Threet were handled, even if both did not have a bright future in RR's system.
From what I?ve heard, I?ve been talking to coaches all morning, my position coach, Coach (Rod) Smith, he told me specifically that they have not offered him. They don?t know why he would lie. They don?t know the kid. They haven?t offered them. They said we?ll let you?ll know what?s up, because right now, their specific words were, they haven?t offered them.
Either Tate misspoke in the bolded section above, was misquoted, or something else.
