Buckeye Planet's unique quality as a gathering place for Buckeye fans is maybe best exemplified by the mere existence of this thread on it's boards.

Put this topic out on BN or similar, I assure you, it would be struck down before anyone had a chance to say, "yeah, I actually liked them, or some of their best music."

Me, I'm not really a huge Dead fan. But, of all the bass players from the 60's Phil Lesh always impressed me as a comprehensively gifted architect of the 4-string undertone.

And, anyone who listened to the likes of Wharf Rat would know what I mean.

They then transition to the symbiosis of campfire guitar serenades and lyrics that were American Beauty and Workingman's Dead - anyone who doubts the musical chops of the Dead need only listen to those two albums. If you need an unstoppable argument as to the union of Lyric and melody Garcia and Robert Johnston mastered, and you only have one track to play to make your point -- just start Ripple, and let it play through.

Not to quibble with what Sandgk has to say, as I think he's essentially accurate, I wouldn't recommend any studio album. While I agree that of them, Workingman's and Beauty are at or near the top of the list, the Dead do not lend themselves well to the studio.

Top 40 was never really the focus. Experimentation was. In 1968 they recorded Anthem of the Sun. This album was the first of it's kind - melding live recordings with studio work. While by today's standards the splices are - in many places - VERY noticable, the album itself was unlike any other of its time. Personally, it's my favorite Album (mostly because it's "live") I suppose their self titled Debut album is most "radio friendly" but, listening to their 1st and then their second (Anthem) you can hear that the band, in the course of a year or so, clearly went in the direction of focusing on a live sound over being studio friendly.

Here is a Estimated from the '77 tour, April. This is the Dead at their absolute peak. The months from April -July was the classic of classic shows. Capital Theater live on WNEW, the Fox Theatre 77 shows. The Garden. This is when Jerry had the clean supply and was a fucking picasso on the Guitar. Donna was great. Bob could actually play. Keith was not all fucked up on junk yet.

:lol: Thankfully, no - I don't recall that happening, but Bill Graham does ride in on a giant joint. It's pretty funny - I think Dan Akroyd was the emcee.

I didn't see it on the official site, but it looks like Amazon has it for ~$27.

Ah yes. I believe Father Guido Sarducci was there also? I have the tapes still somewhere.

If I remember Ackroyd sounded like he was tripping his balls off. I am going to see if they have it at Netflicks right now.
