Grateful Dead Thread

Not sure whether there are enough Heads on the board to warrant such a thread, but what the hell, right?

It being summer time, I've found myself once again listening primarily to the Dead. Usually this happens in the spring as well. In any event, I've been checking out as many shows from 1968 as I can get my fingers on. Right now, without hesitation, this is my favorite year (Although, I have to include Novermber 1967 too)

I saw a couple of shows back in the early 90's (Buckeye Lake and Richfield). I never really got the fascination though. That is unless you are just really into weed and balloons.

that's primarily when I was seeing them live as well. First show in 1986, last in... 94 I think it was. Anyway, by then, they were old men, you know. I enjoyed the music, a lot.. actually.. but there was no "edge" to most of it by then. Part of the great thing about a Dead show was just hanging out in the parking lot.... the scene. Well, it was great for me, I guess.

But, most people who are aware of the 80's - 90's Dead never bother to check out what it was like when they were new... young... cutting edge. That's one of the reasons why I'm so in to the 1968 shows right now. The energy and jams were, in my opinion, so much more intense. A freshness, I guess.

It's funny, I have a buddy who can't stand the Dead. He basically says, "Come on, touch of grey is a terrible tune, and they are old men..." And, frankly, Touch is a cheesy tune and they were old men. So, anyway, I'm in my office, listening to some show from 1968, the song is Good Morning Little School Girl.... he comes in, taps his toes for a few minutes and says, "So, what are you listening to?" I say, "The Grateful Dead" And he didn't believe me. Says, "This doesn't sound much like Touch of Grey" I said, "No shit. They've been around for 30 years, they weren't always old men."

He still doesn't like the Grateful Dead... Old habits die hard, I guess... but, I did hip him up to the Allman Brothers.

Ahhh, the Dead and the Allman Brothers Band, summer is defintely around the corner. Camping music staples. I disagree with you on a lot BKB, but some of your taste in music is impeccable.

Actually, they've been around for 40 years or so...if you're friend doesn't realize they've been around since a couple decades before "Touch of gray", then it's his loss.

I've never been to a show. I have some friends who would just go to the parking lot to hang out.

One funny story. My mom was involved with some volunteer group and as a fundraiser they used to operate a safety coffee break (feel free to crack jokes) at a rest stop on 77 between Akron and Cleveland. One weekend they were doing this there was a dead show in town. I guess a bunch of deadheads were "camping" at the stop and would continuously come and want snacks from their booth. The snacks were "free" (donations welcome kind of thing). A Trooper happened to stop by to check on everything and ran the deadheads out of there. I guess it was a bunch of little old bluehairs versus the deadheads and the bluehairs won.

I'm definitely a fan of the Dead, but I've really just started listening to them-I can't go through and discuss the shows year by year like all the crazies out there.....I really like a show from 77'-maybe it was Oakland-that I downloaded-Franklin's Tower-something-Samson and Delilah....
Which of Dick's Pick's would anyone recommend for me to pick up 1st?

My favorite Dicks Picks is DP IV, but that's not going to give you the 77ish sound you're looking for.
