I use a Trimble Recon Pocket PC with a GPS CF Flash card.

It does everything I want but probably is overkill for most people's needs (the mapping software I use is based on USGS topo maps rather than the typical road maps).

It is also rugged to mil standards and I use the PDA to run ballistic software for my come ups which you probably don't need. :)

PS - Mine is grey/green not bright yellow.

My dad has gone through a few different ones over the years and currently uses a Garmin GPS MAP which he is thrilled with.

You should be able to find one on the street for around $300 or so.

For the more budget minded the MAGELLAN eXplorist 500E gets really good reviews for about half the price.

The Earthmate GPS-PN20 is kinda cool because it is integrated with satellite/aerial imagery so you can look at an actual picture of the area in addition to a map...but it also uses an older chipset so it is not quite as accurate as the ones above.

Finally the MAGELLAN CROSSOVER is meant to work as a handheld and a car mounted model...

Last post was Jan 2008. Fast forward to March 2014. I am looking to get one. Anyone have any idea what to look for? I just went to Best Buy and some come equipped with bluetooth, lifetime maps, traffic and other fancy features. What is the purpose of bluetooth? I asked Best Buy guys and they said it was for voice commands. But some come with voice commands as a feature. So naturally I asked what is the difference between bluetooth voice commands and regular voice commands, and they didn't know. (They also didn't know that the Wii Mini can't get online, and that it doesn't play GC games. Best Buy employees are not really knowledgeable.) So coming back to the GPS, I have a crappy state of the art phone from the previous decade that is not smart. Can't get GPS on it. So I need one. I checked amazon, newegg and they don't have reviews. Can someone please educate me on them? Or point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Buy a cheap used one on eBay. I got a Garmin for $29 that I can still update through their website. There's every brand on there, I recommend reading the old amazon reviews or youtube vids.

My only recommendation would be to buy one with lifetime maps included. I've got a TomTom and a Garmin and other than minor UI differences, the experience is the same to me.

Bluetooth allows you to pair your phone with the GPS for speaker phone and POI dialing (call ahead seating to a restaurant as an example).

I've got an iPhone as well. At this point I don't even know where my Garmin GPS is and the wife's TomTom makes a nice paper weight. If your are possibly thinking of upgrading your phone anytime, my advice is to do that. If not, get Lifetime Maps and any other features (screen size, brand, Bluetooth, price) you want and call it a day.

Where to get them? You can go to eBay like @Crump's brother said (love Ron Swanson by the way), or watch dailysteals.com, onesale.com, or slickdeals.com; they have them periodically.

We got both of my parents Garmins about 3 years ago (well before they switched to iPhones a couple of months ago.) They are solid, and as long as you update the maps, very accurate. I think we paid $90 each for them at the time.
