I use a Trimble Recon Pocket PC with a GPS CF Flash card.
It does everything I want but probably is overkill for most people's needs (the mapping software I use is based on USGS topo maps rather than the typical road maps).
It is also rugged to mil standards and I use the PDA to run ballistic software for my come ups which you probably don't need. :)
PS - Mine is grey/green not bright yellow.
My dad has gone through a few different ones over the years and currently uses a Garmin GPS MAP which he is thrilled with.
You should be able to find one on the street for around $300 or so.
For the more budget minded the MAGELLAN eXplorist 500E gets really good reviews for about half the price.
The Earthmate GPS-PN20 is kinda cool because it is integrated with satellite/aerial imagery so you can look at an actual picture of the area in addition to a map...but it also uses an older chipset so it is not quite as accurate as the ones above.
Finally the MAGELLAN CROSSOVER is meant to work as a handheld and a car mounted model...
