Google Chromium OS

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QRO3gKj3qw]YouTube - What is Google Chrome OS?[/ame]

I have been playing with the beta, it's interesting, I am not sure the world is ready for what is essentially an online operating system. There are no real local apps, you get a web browser, essentially, this is your start menu:

chromestartmenu.jpg

The whole os is essentially the browser, you login with your gmail account and there you go.

I am kind of torn, the OS is blazing fast, but I see it's limitations as being a serious problem. It almost reminds me of the old "internet TV boxes" while the concept is good, too many people use their netbooks for music and movies on the go, I love cloud computing, but I will be interested to see how the consumer views this product, is there a way google can make this thing look like something the average consumer wants to use and own?

For a netbook or phone I think it would be a good option. Outside of that, not so much.

What happens the first time that someone hits this thing with a virus? Do you store your files on your computer or everything in the cloud?

The idea is that everything is stored in the cloud, documents go into google docs, pics go into facebook/picaza/photobucket, music is slacker or pandora. It's design is for netbooks, but I still see some limitations to the lack of online storage.

As for Virus's, there's not much of a concern at the moment, since it's built on the OpenSUSE kernel, the virus's out there are few and far between, not to mention the fact that there's already free antivirus installed if you choose.

It does push towards the "single source login" which I am a big fan of, I hate having so many passwords, it's gotten out of control, I would love to login to my gmail and be logged into facebook, pandora, buckeyeplanet, google wave, etc...

In a day & age where the average consumer has more computing power & storage space than entire governments had several decades ago some folks are pushing to return to the days of dumb terminals.

Why? So they (google) can mine more data from you and sell it.

Carry on.

While you are over dramatizing the situation, I catch what you are shooting at. This OS isn't designed for my home, or my office. This OS is created specifically for the netbook. With services like orb, you suddenly have access to all your media, and even your pc at home. It works with flash 10, which has become the standard.

Not a home PC, but a computer that fulfills your internet needs.

Oh and I don't know what world you live in, but every thing you do is data, you get an oil change, they are calculating how many people need oil changes in your city, you buy beer? same thing.

Google is straight forward about what they are doing... is the 7-11? The still turn in data which is used to advertise, how many people buy porn at night? How much security should they have? everything is data.

It's the world we live in, unless you are living in a shack, heated by home made candles and heated by a fireplace. your data is mined, at least Google gives you something in return.

Google's long term goal is to institute it as a desktop OS as well.

They're just targeting netbooks right now because it's a new market without an established dominant player.

Let's also not forget that this is exactly the kind of integration that the world would go bugfuck crazy over if MS implemented it.

Exactly. Feel free to track my IP. You still won't know. :)

Well, MS is actually working on their own cloud based os so, but I know where your coming from, MS's idea was there to eliminate other options at the time when they tried this.

Like I said, overall I think it's a neat idea, but I mean I have my entire home network run through my desktop, ubuntu is a much better option than chrome right now, but I will say that it is fast.

Sure but I don't see it as being of particular use to the home user. To be honest virtually everything it offers can be accessed currently via your web browser.

Now if certain companies were to work on such an OS for commercial applications it could be of great use. As a system admin I would be much happier with that type of centralized control. Pushing updates would be a dream.

With Microsoft's new cloud os coming, or using EyeOS, you could make a pretty interesting corporate infrastructure here. I don't know how feasible it would be without a shit-ton of development time.

I am with you though, I think it's a cool idea but I just don't see a lot of practicality in it. Even for my netbook, the idea that it always needs to be online really does take away some of the things I do with it, like watch movies on the plane when I am flying.

I fiddled with gOS for awhile but in the end it just didnt offer anything that I couldnt already do via a browser (and wasnt any easier).

That's just another linux build, as as much as I am a fan of the Linux desktop, I realize most people aren't and odds are won't be moving over any time soon. However, Linux still has a ton of practical applications, since you can do anything with it and everything is pretty much free.

EyeOS is a different application, check out eyeos.org or create an account on eyeos.info. It is a PHP powered desktop basically, adds an operating system inside the browser. The concept of cloud is pretty familiar, it's the different ways people are trying to implement it that's interesting.

So is Chrome OS.

I think I have a VM version of it around somewhere.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love fiddling with the variant OS's out there.

AROS, Haiku (BeOS), MorphOS, MEOS, ReactOS, SkyOS & Syllable have all sat on one of my boxes at one point or another....and I've fiddled with 20-30 different Linux builds...and of course PC-BSD has a full time position on my laptop.
