I know that most of you aren't into foreign films, so I'll make a few serious recommendations for the beginner (geared to a male audience): the Kenneth Branagh version of Henry V; any of the Ealing comedies, especially Ladykillers; the early Mel Gibson movie Gallipoli, directed by Peter Weir (The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society, Green Card); Breaker Morant, a war trial movie similar to Kubrick's Paths of Glory; Grand Illusion, a prisoner of war movie; Diabolique, a Hitchcock style thriller; Aguirre: Wrath of God, a more or less true story about a mad Spanish conquistador; M, starring pre-Hollywood Peter Lorre as a serial child-killer; and any of the Eastwood "spaghetti westerns" and the Kurosawa samurai movies.

The ladies will especially like Babette's Feast; Jean de Floret; Pygmalion; A Room With a View; Beauty and the Beast; and probably Picnic at Hanging Rock (also by Peter Weir).

For the one person who cares, my list of foreign films:

I make 2 people who care. Good list, I've only seen about half of those. I've got some work to do.

I was very impressed by Peter Lorre's preformance in 'M', and by that South American actress that only made the 1 movie, the silent Joan of Arc.
