Saban and Tressel might be a little higher up in Mel Tucker's coaching tree than the Kirbster
uhm..Kirby has done a spectacular job developing coaches, especially for a young coach.
Look at Kirby's Coaching Tree:
- Mel Tucker - Sparty
- Sam Pittman- Arkansas
- Dan Lanning - Oregon
- Shane Beamer- South Carolina
- And several current assistants were former HC's (Todd Monken- S. Miss, Matt Luke- Ole Miss, Will Muschamp - Florida, South Carolina)
Kirby's Tree isn't just for coaching... he's developing off the staff and dietitians as well. This guy is a legend. Off the field staff will be lining up to work with him. They know they spend a few years, Kirby will develop you and you can go get a pay raise. Kirby isn't stupid.
Georgia quarterback JT Daniels and receiver George Pickens are among players who have been placed in COVID-19 protocol, according to a report by DawgNation. Daniels is vaccinated, but Pickens’ vaccination status is unknown.
The Georgia football medical staff will be offering its players booster shots Wednesday amid the recent surge in COVID-related cases across the sports landscape. Coach Kirby Smart is not expected to be made available to the media to update player statuses until the team arrives in Florida on Sunday.
The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs play No. 2-ranked Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 31 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., in the Orange Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal.
Georgia players are expected to take a short break after practice Wednesday for the holidays before reporting back Saturday night and traveling to Florida on Sunday.
Georgia outside linebacker Nolan Smith, a third-year sophomore believed to be angling toward returning for another season, said Tuesday that UGA has tightened its COVID protocols of late.
“Mostly wearing masks in the building, that’s a big thing we have going on, starting back and wearing masks again,” Smith said. “Everyone thought we were done with the masks, and now the masks have come back.”
Smith said the Georgia players are dedicated toward “anything to win games” as well as keeping one another and their respective families’ protected.
“A lot of guys are about to go home to their families,” Smith said. “I’m going to see my grandmom and going to go hunting with my uncle, and I don’t want to get those people sick.”
Bulldogs defensive end Travon Walker, who is among the underclassmen considering declaring himself for the NFL draft, said it has been an item of discussion.
“We don’t want to lose any players to something we can kind of prevent, by putting back on our masks, so that has been a conversation,” Walker said. “It’s by choice, but the type of team we have, the guys don’t want to risk missing the game because it’s so big to us, so we’re starting to put back our masks on our own.”

Beamer - is clearly under his dad’s “tree”
Pittman - you could argue belongs under Bert
Lanning - Sorry he GA’d at bama he’s Saban’s
Tucker - covered
wont cover the rest :)
Kirby is still riding Saban’s coattails until he beats him and wins something of merit
Kirby Smart’s fifth season as UGA football head coach is nearing the home stretch with his coaching tree growing.
Shane Beamer’s hire Sunday as South Carolina’s head coach makes him the third former Georgia assistant under Smart to take over a power five conference program.
Beamer joins Arkansas coach Sam Pittman and Michigan State coach Mel Tucker as former Smart assistants now head coaches.
All were on Smart’s first Georgia staff in 2016, meaning one third of the on-field assistants are now head coaches. They helped Georgia in 2017 win the Rose Bowl and go to the national championship game.
Oregon's decision to hire Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning further extends Kirby Smart's coaching tree just six years into his job as head coach of his alma meter.
Lanning is just the fourth former Georgia assistant coach promoted to a power-five head coaching job and the second defensive coordinator to take a head coaching job after leaving Smart and Athens.
The first coach was Lanning's predecessor at defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. Tucker joined Smart in 2016 as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach, leaving Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and legendary head coach Nick Saban.
Tucker presided over three Georgia defenses that finished top-20 in total defense, helping Georgia to a 32-9 record in his time in Athens.
A year after Tucker left, Georgia lost another original staff member from the Kirby Smart era, offensive line coach Sam Pittman. Pittman left Athens for the head coaching job at Arkansas, the school where Georgia lured him away from in 2016.
Pittman was just the first non-coordinator in the Smart coaching tree to take a head coaching job following a stint in Athens. Pittman would be joined a season later in that category by Shane Beamer. Beamer, the now head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons as the special teams' coordinator and tight ends coach for Georgia.
Beamer left Georgia after the 2017 season for Norman, Oklahoma, to serve in the same role with the Sooners for three seasons before taking the job in Columbia, South Carolina.
With Lanning being the fourth former coaching staff member to take a head coaching job, Smart's quote in his statement released Saturday evening rings true "Opportunities like this are a testament to a successful program. "
Georgia is just weeks away from making its second ever playoff appearance in the semifinal versus No. 2 Michigan.
Nick Saban is the standard. Whatever Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart accomplishes or fails to accomplish will always be compared to Saban. Sometimes it’s unfair to compare Smart to the greatest college football coach of all-time, but that’s the world we live in in the SEC.
One way the two coaches are similar is that other college football programs frequently vulture top assistants from their coaching staff. Saban’s coaching tree is unmatched, but Smart has already helped four of his former assistants land power five head coaching jobs.
Can you name all four?

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett said he hasn't spent a moment thinking about his job security as he prepares to face Michigan in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Friday. In fact, he said, he's barely aware of the debate.
"I don't have social media, so I don't wallow in it," Bennett said Tuesday. "I don't sit in it. I don't think about it. All I'm thinking about is beating Michigan."
Bulldogs offensive coordinator Todd Monken gave Bennett his full support Tuesday, too, saying the former walk-on gives Georgia its best shot to beat Michigan. Monken also confirmed Bennett will have another key contributor on offense for the College Football Playoff semifinal, as receiver George Pickens is expected to play after missing a week of bowl practice earlier this month.
"If you look at the plays he's made, he's made national championship plays. He has," Monken said of Bennett. "You turn on the film and look at some of the throws he makes, the decisions he makes, the things he does with his feet. There's no doubt in my mind we can win the national championship. There's no doubt in my mind we can win it with Stetson Bennett."
Bennett opened the season as the backup quarterback for the Bulldogs, but he saw action in Week 2 with former five-star recruit JT Danielsinjured, and he threw for five touchdowns in the process. By early October, Bennett was again the starter, leading the Bulldogs to a 12-0 regular season and a No. 1 ranking entering the SEC championship game.
Still, debate persisted about whether Bennett, a former walk-on, was good enough to take the Bulldogs to a national championship, and after Alabama trounced UGA to win the SEC, the discussion got louder. Bennett said he doesn't let the doubters affect him.
"I wouldn't listen to myself if I was giving a speech on heart surgery," Bennett said. "So why would I listen to somebody who doesn't do this for a living and just watches it happen? It really doesn't bother me."
Daniels has played sparingly since a Week 4 injury that saw him depart the Vanderbilt game. From there, Bennett seized control of the job, Monken said, and never looked back.
"It wasn't really anything JT did, it was more along the lines of what Stetson did that we thought gave us the best chance to win," Monken said. "His mobility in the run game and the pass game when things break down, we believe give us the best chance to win. It just happened where Stetson got an opportunity, took advantage of that opportunity, we continued to win. It never really ended up flipping the other way."
Bennett's mobility -- he has 251 yards rushing this season, including 141 on scrambles -- is likely a necessary weapon in the Orange Bowl, with Michigan's defense featuring two of the country's top pass-rushers in David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson.
Monken acknowledged that the debate largely surrounds the recruiting of both quarterbacks, and said he's bought in at times, too.
"I think Stetson at times, have probably undervalued his skill set," Monken said. "We've tried to elevate guys that have talent on our roster, and we do that at every position, and some guys just combat that and fight and scratch and continue to play well and try to prove you wrong, and that's what Stetson Bennett did."
As for Pickens, injuries limited him to just two games and three receptions this season. Pickens suffered an ACL injury in the spring, but he returned to action in the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech and had two receptions against Alabama.
In last year's Peach Bowl, Pickens had one of his best games, catching seven passes for 135 yards and a touchdown in a win over Cincinnati.
"There are going to be some things that he's continued to work through, trusting the knee, obviously reps," Monken said. "We're still trying to work him in and to make sure that he can help us offensively and most importantly help us win with what he can do at this point."
Especially after last year’s COVID BS from Scum…..If scUM wins a Natty b/c of two Covid forfeits, I will chloroform myself.
