I thought the conference champions got an automatic bid and first round bye under the new for at least now 12 team championship rules? The Committee had no power to keep UGA out of the playoffs, no matter how many players got hurt or otherwise left the team.

The 4 highest rated conference champions, yes. And the 5th highest is guaranteed a spot, but not a bye. So if they ranked Georgia below Army, they could have kept them out of the playoffs. But that might have caused another War Between the States.
