Re: I cannot believe that no one has posted this @ORD_Buckeye I know that coaches get bonuses for winning Conference and National championship but for an AD to get a bonus because of athlete won a national championship is just mind-boggling. Ohio State AD Gene Smith's $18,000 bonus for Logan Stieber's NCAA wrestling title doesn't seem to go over very well.

Don't be mad a Smith for this, you can't blame him for trying to get as much as possible in his contact. You would do the same thing too. Be mad at the Ohio State president, administrator, and/or trustees that approved it.

This has been going on everywhere for decades but is only a national story today because it involves Gene Smith, Ohio State, and the perceived inequitable treatment of our student-athlete slave-dogs that compete in games for our amusement. But to reduce the discussion to just that does a disservice to any athletic director's ability to balance the desire of a top tier competitive Olympic sport program featuring both coaches and facilities that will draw talented athletes with gold medal dreams, versus the fact these are the sports that likely hemorrhage greenbacks that could be better invested by installing stripper poles in suites at the football stadium for Nevin Shapiro.

Yeah, it's fun to poke at Gene Smith's flaws, but I sure as heck wouldn't want to be sitting in that chair when the day comes I have to explain to 30-some odd presently enrolled students, their parents, and the entire coaching staff why I'm cutting their sport.

It's fun to be the lightning rod, isn't it? The problem is the ESPiN's of the world play to the lowest common denominator so you get outrage without the historical context.

Ohio State to initiate NCAA legislation to pay for football playoff travel for families in future

From the very first time he was asked about it all the way through Ohio State’s win on Thursday night, Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer has had one pet issue with the College Football Playoff: reimbursing players’ families for the travel burden of two far, expensive trips in less than a two-week span.

“Are we going to get their families to Dallas? We should. That should happen immediately, that there should be an immediate committee meeting somewhere. Let’s get them to Dallas and watch their sons play in college football history. And I hope you all write that. That’s more important than anything else being said today,” Meyer told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

In a statement released on his Twitter account, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said, "I have always been in agreement with Coach Meyer. I wish we could help the families of players more than we currently can. I will initiate NCAA legislation to allow us to provide more financial assistance in the future for postseason trips."

He frick'n better get on this. He likely won't be able to make something happen this year, but he had damn well better be stink on shit on this topic. He's in a position to make a positive change for these families / kids and as one who benefits from their work, it'd be sad for him not to do something. JFC, all he needs to do is schedule a meeting for Annie... She'll get it done.

College Football Playoff to help pay for parents' travel expenses

The College Football Playoff and the NCAA announced Tuesday that they will provide financial assistance to cover travel expenses for the families of athletes participating in the upcoming CFP national title game and the Final Fours of the NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments.

For next week's football title game, the family of each participating player will be able to have two parents or legal guardians attend, with up to $1,250 in travel reimbursement and meal expenses covered for each parent or guardian, the CFP said in a statement.

Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith said during an interview in Columbus that he worked with Oregon AD Rob Mullens, Big Ten Conference commissioner Jim Delany, Pacific-12 commissioner Larry Scott, the CFP and the NCAA to make the pilot program possible.

"The NCAA found a way to make this happen," Smith said. "I really appreciate it."
