Gene Smith (Former AD, ‘10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

I find it interesting that few that have posted in this thread have cited specific things they feel Gene Smith did wrong. Any thoughts as to what specifically he did? Most comments illustrate that the people that dislike him do so because that his wife got a job, he's from Notre Dame, the conference realignment non-issue, he "seems" only out for the money, he makes jokes at inopportune times, and he "seems" like he hasn't done much. According to his peers (the people that have his job), he is an extraordinary AD (hence AD of the year). It's not like he goes up to his office and twiddles his thumbs and calls coach tress to handle the numerous other varsity sports at the university (at least I don't think he does) So again, what specifically warrants his leave from the university? I feel that it is quite possible that a head coach (Coach Tress) and an AD (Gene smith) have no idea about what the players do throughout the day. With that said, I believe that it reflects poorly on the AD if your head coach doesn't tell you certain things. I also feel that he handled the initial press conference poorly. I still think we are lucky to have Gene Smith, but the media sensationalization of the "scandal" coupled with the hurt from losing coach Tress makes people want to get rid of Gee and Gene Smith. IMO that's ridiculous GO BUCKS!!!

Because of his press conference in December and decision to push for the "tat-5" to play in the Sugar Bowl. It was wrong then, and it's certainly wrong now.

His tale of players selling the memorabilia for cash b/c family members needed the money was insulting, especially with the discounted tattoos they purchased.

He did preside on an unbelievable run of success for both major sports (basketball and football), but one has to wonder what that foundation (in football) that was laid upon now...

I guess the counter-argument people will use is that Andy Geiger hired both Jim Tressel and Thad Matta. At least that's the popular counter-argument (which is true).

BMYMSOB could of had an amazing run after Andy Geiger....Geiger was that good.

I also have zero doubt a Andy Geiger run press-conference in regards to the "tat-5" would have been significantly better damage control than that of Gene Smith. That PC was an absolute train-wreck.

I started disliking Smith when he colossally screwed up the division alignment by not forcing the issue. With Geiger, there is no way we would be in a different division then scUM.

Smith has done nothing to restore my confidence in him since then.

For the most part, I think everyone's recent points are extremely fair. He definitely deserves some criticism, but I don't think stating, "what has he exactly done for Ohio State?" or the recent issues warrants his dismissal from the university. I think that his ability to maintain a high level of excellence, not de-funding the 11 varsity sports most major athletic programs have, mentor osu students, and deal with BuckeyeNation have been positive/good overall. With that said, his next coaching hire for football will reflect on his leadership skills. He's made some decent coaching hires (see baseball). I don't think Coach Tress should have been forced to re-sign. Similarly, I don't think our AD should have to. It does reflect poorly on Gene Smith that we haven't had better control on some student athletes behavior so the criticism is warranted. I'm hopeful that his best work is yet to come, but only time will tell.
