Not sure if I'll make the tailgate as I have several events to attend before the game, including a golf outing in the morning. Anyway, I thought you might like the official word on all things tailgaiting.

Ohio State prepares for 2005 home season

Policies geared toward making football Saturdays safe, enjoyable for all

COLUMBUS – Ohio State University kicks off the 2005 football season with four consecutive home games. The season begins at noon on Saturday (9/3), when Ohio State hosts Miami University (Ohio).

For seven Saturdays this autumn, hundreds of people from across the university and from law enforcement agencies across the state will work together to make sure Ohio State home football games are a safe and enjoyable experience for fans. Fan safety and enjoyment are also goal of number of policies that will affect the game day experience. Those policies involve parking, tailgating, and security. Fans around the state and nation can learn more about policies at http://athletics.osu.edu/gameday/ The website site is updated each week.
Highlights include:

• Two new parking garages with more than 2,000 additional spaces will help alleviate parking pressure.
• In accordance with state fire codes, Ohio State will continue to enforce the ban on grilling in parking garages. Ohio Fire Code FM-3606 and Columbus Fire Code 25-01-14 restrict the use of liquefied petroleum gases inside buildings, including parking garages. Grilling is permitted on surface parking lots.
• Columbus Police, Ohio State University Police and other law enforcement agencies will continue to enforce Ohio's open container laws in and around parking lots.
• The City of Columbus is reminding fans that city code requires a permit for tents larger than 200 square feet, and will have Columbus Division of Fire inspectors on hand to inspect tents to ensure they have the proper permit. If no permit is found, inspectors will cite the individuals and order the tent to be taken down. The first offense will be a warning. In addition, officials have said that no cooking of any type is permitted underneath tents or awnings.
• Two campus area streets have been changed from one-way to two-way traffic. The conversion of Chittenden and East 11th avenues to two-way traffic flow occurred in July preceding the opening of the South Campus Gateway.
• Ohio State is expanding the policy requiring appropriate OSU identification for those entering the stadium with discounted tickets. The policy, which last year applied only to student tickets, this year includes discounted faculty and staff tickets.

Below are details of all policies and changes regarding parking, security, and game day traditions:

Getting there and parking
Campus parking lots tend to fill early on game days. Fans should plan to arrive at least
2 to 3 hours prior to kickoff. Officers from many law enforcement agencies assist Ohio State in managing traffic. Motorists should follow the officers' direction as they will know when parking lots become full and will direct motorists to best available parking.

At least two hours before the game starts, some streets on and around campus become one-way, going toward the Stadium. At the end of the game, traffic patterns are reversed, going away from the Stadium. Due to various construction projects on campus, these patterns may change from game to game.

A color-coded parking map is available at

http://www.tp.ohio-state.edu/Maps/FootballParkingMap2005.pdf

Public parking
Public parking is available in any "day-of-game" lot at a charge of $10 per vehicle (no charge with a current OSU permit). These parking lots include: parts of the Polo Field lot, Ag campus lots, Fawcett Center, Woody Hayes Facility, Blankenship Hall, the Buckeye lots at the Schottenstein Center, and West Campus lots. Free bus service from West Campus begins five hours prior to kickoff and continues until one hour after the game.

Two new garages will be available for public parking. The Neil Avenue garage, accessible from Neil Avenue just north of 12th Avenue, is available for day-of-game public parking. The new South Campus Gateway garage is located off East 11th Avenue and East 9th Avenues, just east of High Street. A shuttle bus will take fans from the South Campus Gateway garage to the corner of Neil and 17th Avenues on game days. Service begins three hours prior and ends three hours after each game.

Other campus garages available for day-of-game parking include the Ohio Union garage, Arps Hall garage, South Cannon garage, 9th Avenue garage, 11th Avenue garage and 12th Avenue garage.

Camper and RV parking
Season Permits – Recreational vehicles, campers and vans with season RV parking permits will be located in the Gray 3-7 lots, west of Bill Davis Stadium and north of Borror Drive.
Day of game parking – Day of game parking in the Buckeye Lots, northwest of the Schottenstein Center and Jesse Owens Memorial Track Stadium is available on a first-come first-served basis. Day-of-game camper parking is $50.

Disability Parking
Disability parking is located in lots north of St. John Arena at a cost of $10. Please access this lot via High Street to Woodruff Ave. to Tuttle Park Place instead of from Lane Ave. to avoid lengthy traffic delays. A shuttle will provide continuous adapted transportation service to Gate 14 of the Stadium beginning three hours before kickoff and continuing through one hour following the game. Drivers will need to present a valid OSU disability parking permit, a season parking permit issued by the Athletic Department, or a valid State Disability Placard. The registered owner of the permit/placard must be present or face possible fines.

Season Parking Permits
Reserved lots for those who have purchased a season parking permit from the Department of Athletics are: the permit lots around Ohio Stadium, south French Field House, Sisson Hall, parts of the Polo field lot, the lots south of Lincoln Tower, the Schottenstein Center lots and the Riverbank lots west of the Olentangy River, as well as the Northwest, Tuttle Park Place, and North Cannon (Medical Center) garages. The lot between Lincoln and Morrill towers is reserved for special event parking.

Free Shuttle from West Campus lots
Free shuttle buses will provide continuous service beginning three hours before kickoff continuing through one hour after the game for fans parking on west campus. Shuttles pick up and drop off fans at Mount Hall on West Campus and the Sisson Hall footbridge located just west of Drake Union and Ohio Stadium.

Tailgating and other traditions
Tailgating before and after Buckeye football games is a long-standing Ohio State tradition and we are very pleased that so many fans have embraced a family-friendly atmosphere on game day.

Fans are expected to obey all state and local laws; treat fellow fans, including those supporting the opposing team, with civility; and respect the property of others.

Tailgating, tents and alcohol
Law enforcement agencies will continue to enforce state laws regarding use and possession of alcohol. Both Columbus Police and OSU Police will issue citations or make arrests for violations of the laws prohibiting open containers of alcohol in public areas, including university parking lots and garages. Persons engaging in underage drinking, public indecency, disorderly conduct and other violations are also subject to arrest.

Columbus Division of Fire inspectors will begin inspecting tents in order to enforce a city code that requires a permit for tents larger than 200 square feet. Beginning Saturday (9/3), inspectors will be looking for and inspecting tents and seeking permits. While a warning, not a citation, will be issued for a first offense, violators will be required to dismantle their tent immediately. Additionally, the Division of Fire reminds fans that no cooking is permitted inside or underneath a tent or awning.

Barbeques
In accordance with state fire codes, Ohio State will continue to enforce existing regulations regarding open fires in parking areas.
• Outdoor grills (propane and charcoal) and portable generators are no longer permitted anywhere inside parking garages. This includes the rooftop level.
• Grills (propane or charcoal) are allowed on surface parking lots, where the majority of parking is located.
• Having a grill and open flames in such close proximity to automobile gas tanks is an obvious fire hazard. In addition to institutional liability concerns, if a grill caused a fire in a garage it would be impossible for fire equipment to reach the site.

Skull Sessions
The OSU Marching Band Skull Session starts two hours before kickoff of every home football game. Held at St. John Arena, the Skull Session is a popular concert/pep rally, with over 10,000 fans in attendance. The event is free, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ohio Stadium Policies
• Gates open two hours prior to kickoff.

Stadium Security
Increased security at large venues is a fact of life post-9/11, and Ohio Stadium on football Saturdays is no different. University safety officials will continue to institute homeland security precautions. Specific details of the precautions will not be discussed. However, they will include a high degree of scrutiny of both people and vehicles in and around the stadium. There will again be checkpoints for large vehicles and officials will be strictly enforcing passes and permits of vehicles that approach the stadium.

All bags, small purses and containers are subject to search. Cooperation with game management and security personnel will help maintain Ohio Stadium as a safe and secure environment for all Ohio State fans.

Security personnel outside each gate will assist with crowd control, check identification for those with discounted student or faculty/staff tickets, and look for prohibited items.

The following items are not permitted in Ohio Stadium:
• Weapons of any type
• Large bags or backpacks
• Food
• Beverages
• Coolers or other containers
• Video cameras
• Cameras with professional lenses
• Televisions
• Radios without headsets
• Chairback seats
• Banners, signs or noisemakers or other irritants
Fans with special health or medical needs should use gates 9, 14 or 25.

Tickets for university students, faculty and staff
Ohio State is expanding the policy requiring appropriate OSU ID for those entering the stadium with discounted tickets. The policy, which last year applied to student tickets, will this year include discounted faculty and staff tickets.

Faculty and staff tickets are purchased as season tickets. The cost for one discounted faculty staff season ticket this year is $329 ($47 per game). At the time of purchase, ticket holders had the option of updgrading the entire season to the public price for $77, bringing the cost to $406 ($58 per game). Tickets may also be upgraded on a per-game basis. The cost of a single-game public ticket is $58.

Dependents (children, spouses and same sex partners) of faculty and staff are eligible to use discounted tickets without the family member present by presenting a dependent BuckID card, available at the BuckID Card Office.

• Fans using discounted faculty, staff or student tickets will be required to show appropriate OSU ID (BuckID) along with their ticket prior to entering the gates of Ohio Stadium.
• Fans with discounted tickets but no BuckID will not be able to enter Ohio Stadium.
• Every gate will be equipped with handheld scanners to scan barcodes on discounted tickets. Tickets will be scanned and not torn.
• Those with discounted tickets wishing to let the general public use their ticket will be able to upgrade their ticket for a full-priced public ticket. The ticket-holder will need to come to the ticket office and authorize the exchange, and also be required to pay the difference in the ticket price and any service charges that apply.
• Upgrades must be done prior to the day of the game.
• Students and faculty/staff may allow other members of the university community to use their discounted tickets provided they have required OSU identification.
• Individuals identified as abusing their ticket privileges could lose all future ticket buying privileges.

Disability Seating
Reserved season seating for persons in wheelchairs is located at the top of the AA deck.
Individuals who need wheelchair accessible or disability seating should contact the ticket office prior to the game so that they may be reseated. A handicap placard or doctor notification will be required.

Every effort will be made to find suitable seating for individuals requiring disability seating.
Elevators are located near sections 7, 10 and 37. These elevators may be used by individuals needing assistance in climbing to their seats in B deck or C deck.

Umbrellas
Umbrellas may not be opened in the seating areas of Ohio Stadium. Fans may carry their umbrellas into the stadium for use before and after the game.

The OSU Medical Center
• The Medical Center is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This includes game days.
• The new State Route 315 entrance and exit ramps to the OSU Medical Center at 9th Avenue will be closed on game days. EMS vehicles will be permitted to use them, however.
• The new Hospitals Parking Garage, located on Westpark Street, is reserved for patient and visitor parking ONLY. This garage is located on Westpark Street between Medical Center Drive and 10th Avenue.

An interesting article on Vince Young.......Which I agree with. I just think that scrambling QB's beating Michigan is second fiddle..........Smith did the same thing.

Vince Young is Mike Vick. The Texas quarterback can change a football game just by breathing on it. Opposing defensive coordinators are gobbling antidepressants over the prospect of trying to contain him. Book him a room in Canton now. No, make that a suite.

Well, not so fast.

It appears Young might be the darling of the critics this season. And it’s conceivable he could live up to the enormous amount of advanced hype he’s getting as the superstar of a Longhorns team that might actually beat Oklahoma this year.

But really, what has he proved thus far?

He had an unbelievable game in the Rose Bowl last season, helping Texas beat Michigan 38-37. But the Wolverines focused their defensive efforts in that game on shutting down Cedric Benson, the Longhorns’ leading rusher, who had only 70 yards in 23 carries, his lowest output of the 2004 season. Young rushed for 192 yards and four touchdowns, and passed for another 180 yards and another TD.

He was nearly unstoppable, but that’s because Michigan overplayed Benson. Texas is fortunate it had two men in its backfield who could run the ball, and Michigan couldn’t stop both of them. If the Wolverines had overplayed Young, Benson might have set Rose Bowl records.

In the Longhorns’ biggest game of 2004 before the Rose Bowl, Young was 8 for 23 for just 86 yards and rushed for another 54 in 16 carries in a 12-0 loss to Oklahoma.

Will the real Vince Young please stand up? Now that Benson is gone and the spotlight is solely on him, we’ll find out soon enough.

Since tOSU fans like to rely on season ending trends to predict how the 2005 version of Bucks will play, I think I'll adopt the same philosophy. Look for The Real Vince Young to make even more of a name for himself this upcoming year.

We like to rely on season ending trends when there are close to 10 starters/major contributors that weren't in the mix during the early part of the season, including Ted Ginn, Troy Smith, Ashton Youboty, Anthony Schlegel, Anthony Gonzalez, etc. You can't claim that trend. I'm sure your end of the season team was different... but you lost two major contributors, whereas the only star we lost was Nugent.

I will make a guarantee on this board right now stating that Young will not throw for over 150 yards in next weeks game, which is something that he will need to do to win. He put up gawdy numbers against a suspect Michigan defense....one that OSU also torched, and blew out by a much larger margin than Texas' one point victory. How did he fare against Oklahoma again?

Texas does not necessarily need to throw for over 150 yards to win. He threw for less than that vs. aggy, colorado and texas tech. (I am not saying that their defenses are in the same league as tOSU, but just showing you that he can win and put points on the board w/o throwing 150).

and against Michigan he only threw for 180, so your guarantee isn't really going out on a limb.

Personally I think Michigan made Young and Smith look better than they actually are. On the bright side OSU looked just as good in the bowl game with a different QB so I believe that we will sustain the level of play from the end of last season, while Texas will have a harder time with the Silver Bullets consintrating on Young. Just remember that during Smith's suspension he has been working on the scout team so our D has experience against (basically) a clone of Young.

The past 2 years no running QB who can't throw has beat OSU. Drew Tate was able to do both well against us last year. If Young can't hit his receivers he is going to get punished.

Yeah, they will, seeing as Young will not be able to run on us anywhere near to the degree he did against the group of Michigan players wrongly referred to as a "defense". You also are missing a fairly decent RB who went by the name of Cedric the Entertainer or something like that...

Henne put up 300 yards on us, but only two TDs. Good luck doing better than him. Rave all you want about how his mobility will freeze all of our pass coverage options, but he's not going to pass better as a sometimes shaky QB with very shaky WRs... vs. a very solid QB with the same caliber of OL and much much better WRs.
