Good point... they could always use that paycheck towards the damage if they actually needed it. It is probably just another rumor, but there really isn't much else to discuss for 4 days.
would be nice to see one Louisiana team play so as to have a moment of silence, rememberance for the unfortunate who did not make it out of the Bayou as Tulane and LSU games are postponed. (I am sure that they will have these moments at other games as well)

say both teams cover easily this weekend, or in texas' case close to cover, but dominate nonetheless, what do you see the spread being in this game?

thinking that normal homefield nets you a three point swing, and that this game would have to be close to a pick'em in a neutral site, but also knowing that its ealry, and a -3 looks like too much, I am predicting (the line to be set at) tOSU -2 at the Shoe

Additionally, I have not been to the Shoe before, I do not yet have a ticket this time, but I am considering whether I should wait for after kickoff discount, or if I should watch any pregame rituals from tOSU. Thoughts? what do you guys offer?

Two games postponed after Hurricane Katrina

Two games postponed after Hurricane Katrina
ESPN.com news services

Hurricane Katrina forced the postponement Tuesday of both the Tulane-Southern Mississpippi game and the LSU-North Texas contest.

The Tulane-Southern Mississippi game that was supposed to be played Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss., has been moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving because of the problems caused by Hurricane Katrina.

"We have been in contact with the administrators for both universities and we all agree that the focus of our attention should be on the continued safety of the student-athletes, coaches and the lives of those affected by this storm," Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said Tuesday. "Playing a football game is not our highest priority at this time."

Tulane and Southern Miss were scheduled to end their seasons Nov. 19. Now, their opener will become their finale on Nov. 26.

ESPN2, which was to carry Sunday's game, told the conference it will still try honoring those plans.

Tulane's football and women's soccer teams fled New Orleans on Sunday, making a 9½-hour bus ride to Jackson, Miss. They've been practicing at Jackson State University, although the storm cut power to the campus Monday afternoon after battering Louisiana and heading east.

Tulane will pack its bags and bus to Dallas, where Southern Methodist University will play host until Tulane can return to New Orleans.

Southern Mississippi, which is in battered Hattiesburg, will travel to Memphis, which will be its host.

LSU announced in a statement it had chosen to reschedule its contest so the campus could help the recovery effort.

"The scope of this tragedy is becoming more evident as time passes, and LSU's focus in on assisting the recovery effort of our state," LSU chancellor Sean O'Keefe said. "LSU is a primary evacuation site, and we are not going to conduct any activities that could deter our mission of assisting in the recovery."

A number of athletic facilities on the LSU campus are being used in the recovery effort. The resulting traffic from a football game could have seriously impacted the efforts of emergency medical vehicles arriving from the New Orleans area.

"The events of [Monday] and [Tuesday] morning have made it clear that this is not the time to play a football game," said LSU athletics director Skip Bertman on Tuesday. "This is a dire situation that rivals any in the history of our state, and our priorities are on participating in recovery efforts."

The rescheduled date for LSU's contest will be determined by the two schools and an announcement is expected within the next 36 to 48 hours.

It marks the second straight year both schools have had a football game postponed. Last September, Tulane had to reschedule a contest vs. Louisville and Southern Miss had to move a game vs. California due to Hurricane Ivan.

Not just a rumor. Though far from a confirmed fact. Call it under consideration.
From Dallas Fort Worth paper....

Tulane Southern Miss is definitely off.
I don't see how that is not just a rumor about Lou-Laf, there is no mention of even considering to cancel the game, it says that they didn't get hit bad, and that they were scheduled to be off on Monday, I believe classes resumed there today. Don't see how that is more than a rumor??? Am I reading the article wrong?

Hopefully the game is not cancelled. I can see it now "If UofL-L didn't cancel on us and throw us off we would have beaten Ohio State!"

I just don't want to hear excuses! Plus I was planning on using the Texas Defense for my college fantasy football league, playing against UofL-L is guaranteed money on defensive points
Don't get your panties in a wad. The game's not cancelled. It never was going to be.

Selvin Young, back from injury, says he's in the best shape of his career as Brown unveils Texas' starting lineup for opener.

By Suzanne Halliburton
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

Nearly a year after a broken fibula required 11 screws to repair, Selvin Young was playfully running his mouth, teasing his teammates about how they weren't fast enough to tackle him.

First Young's confidence recovered, then his surgically repaired ankle healed up for contact. On the first day of contact for No. 2 Texas this month, Young was swarmed by at least four of his teammates, who had no problems testing whether the ankle could hold up to a hard hit. In fact, he egged on middle linebacker Aaron Harris, the team's nastiest hitter, to deliver the first blow.

Once Young showed he wasn't gun-shy, he cemented his spot on the first team. On Monday, Texas Coach Mack Brown revealed his starting lineup — including Young —which will take the field Saturday in the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Obviously, with the Longhorns looking to replace four-year starter Cedric Benson, the second-most prolific runner in program history, tailback was the greatest concern coming into the preseason.

"Selvin is 100 percent," Brown proclaimed Monday. "He's gotten his speed back. He's gotten his vision back. He's bigger and strong, and he's definitely ready to go."

With nine starters back on defense and seven on offense, there were few spots to fill on the first team. Still, Brown opened many of the starting spots, making sure there was plenty of competition to help his team focus during these dog days of preseason.

Here's a scorecard on who will be where Saturday night at Royal-Memorial Stadium:

•Although Texas lost only one linebacker — Butkus Award winner Derrick Johnson — Brown was looking for two new outside guys. Redshirt freshman Rashad Bobino will man the weakside spot, with sophomore Drew Kelson, a former safety, earning the first-team job at the strongside.

However, Brown said he views the backups — Eric Hall, Eric Foreman and Robert Killebrew — as starters, too. He said coaches were planning to discuss Monday how to rotate the top six. Aaron Harris, who mans the middle, will be on the field all the time. Collectively, they're probably the fastest set of linebackers since Brown took over the program eight seasons ago.

Speed is the most valuable asset for new defensive coordinator Gene Chizik.

"I think they're all going to help us," Harris said. "I think Coach Chizik is going to have a lot of options."

•The situation at wide receiver is about as fluid as the linebackers because preseason competition didn't whittle down the contenders. Eight were listed on Monday's depth chart.

For now, it appears that the starters for Saturday will be Brian Carter and Limas Sweed.

When the Longhorns show a three-receiver set, Billy Pittman will join the action.

Somewhere in that receiving mix will be Ramonce Taylor, the hybrid player on offense who will see action at split end, slot and tailback.

Others who could see the field include Jordan Shipley, Nate Jones, Quan Cosby and Tyrell Gatewood. Sweed and Jones were starters a year ago. And other than Sweed and Jones, the rest caught a collective five passes in 2004.

Shipley pulled a hamstring the first week of preseason. But he was able to work out Monday.

•Frank Okam has supplanted Larry Dibbles as the starting nose guard. Dibbles, who was academically ineligible this spring, missed critical time when the defense made the transition from Greg Robinson, last year's coordinator, to Chizik.

However, like in the situation with the linebackers, Brown is considering Dibbles as much of a starter as Okam.

•Among the freshmen, expect to see running backs Jamaal Charles and Henry Melton, Cosby and defensive tackle Roy Miller on the field.

Colt McCoy, who technically is the third-team quarterback, will not play, Brown said.

Brown said he was unsure whether defensive ends Chris Brown and Aaron Lewis will play.

But probably the player everyone wants to see is Selvin Young, who was injured in the second game last year and then was academically ineligible in the spring.

"I'm the best shape I've ever been in," Young said Monday, speaking to reporters for the first time in weeks. "I've never felt like this before."

havent all the practice reports said that he has been adequate at best?
No, that he has gotten only moderate work. He is stronger and bigger, but may have lost bit of speed (from bulk, not from injury). We have to see him in full live action to get a barometer on that.

He'll work into the 3rd quarter, I would imagine.

You could never drink me under the table. Judging from how much you drank at the golf outing, I'm convinced that my 17 year old sister could drink more than you
Well, I won't argue that, considering she outdrank you by about two to one last time I was over there. It's probably a good thing you passed out when you did, though, cause you probably would have been REALLY pissed at what happened next. Dude, I seriously didn't know she was only seventeen. I figured anyone who could drink that much had to be AT LEAST 21. Of course, you passed out after only two and a half fuzzy navels, so I guess you shouldn't be the judge. :wink2:

Quote from the LSU AD on the cancelling of their game:

"The events of yesterday and this morning have made it clear that this is not the time to play a football game. This is a dire situation that rivals any in the history of our state, and our priorities are on participating in recovery efforts."

That wording of that quote puts a bit of pressure on other ADs to follow suit.

Lafayette is 135 miles West of NO. Far enough to avoid direct damage, but not so far that many players would not have members of their immediate or extended families living in the impacted areas.

As conditions continue to worsen today I would not be surprrised to see more cancellations.
