Game Thread Game Two: Texas 25, Ohio State 22 (final)

Roy Hall also may very well move to TE. He's now up to 240-245 with similar speed, so he will be a good option for 3 WR + 1 TE sets on 3rd down and such.

Hall had been touted as the next boston (great HS recruit), but never got it done. He definitely doesn't have the speed, but he has been fairly dependable catching passes. It would not surprise me to see Ginn Holmes and Gonzo out wide for speed, and use Hall at TE for some size in the formation.

Very nice. However, the Texas player on the sideline isn't going to see much action waering his home jersey.:wink2:
Yeah I noticed that, and decided it wasn't worth it. Maybe he's just an overzealous recruit, and it wasn't a violation for him to wear the wrong uniform.

The thing is about our offense that Texas' offense won't be nearly as succesful at is our offense will be able to throw more at them. Texas will definatly have their gimmick plays and things like that, but their offense like stated will be in the trenches. Where as ours is kinda actually alittle bit of everything now.

For Instance OSU will have three different QB's during this game maybe even 4? Ginn, Smith, Zwick or Boeckman. We can go 5 wide or we can go double tight and put our full back as a TB and run power. We can throw screens and have 3 recievers under a 4.3 speed take it to the house or we can stretch the field and hit our tight ends under neath (one thing people are forgetting is we return Hamby). With out Shot Ginn Formations we can do reverses and fake reverse Tb Draws or hell we could do a Ginn Throw back pass (he played QB in high school).

For the Texas fans- By no means am I saying Texas isn't capable of pulling some of these tricks out, but I'm stating that OSU has proven talent at all these positions besides RB. All these plays I listed have not only been practiced but have been sucessful in games (besides QB throw back). OSU is definatly more centered around spreading the ball around making the defense not know who is going to have the ball. Where as Texas might be leaning toward lets run the ball and win the game. Now if we can't stop your running game then none of this matters because you win the game, but if you can't stop us and we somewhat contain your running game then well you get the idea...

Randy, I really don't see any way that we don't redshirt him. We recruited him as a tight end and he is not big enough. If we use him at wide reciever he would just be added to the ever growing list of touted young wide outs on our team. So I ask again, Have you heard somehting I haven't?
I really wouldn't like to see Finley play this year but they may not be able to keep him off the field. After Thomas, we don't really have another tight end receiving threat. Sweed will be a big target for Vince, but other than that we don't have another receiver/tight end with size. He certainly won't be a factor vs. OSU, but by all accounts, he really looks good.

But the thing you can't do is put too much into these all star games. In our all star games we had a reciever go over 100 yards recieving with a TD (hartline). A QB go 12-20 with 200 yards (shoenhoff). Our Defensive End was practically unblockable ( Lawrance Wilson), and our CB played shut down play (Amos). In all star games play calling for both sides of the ball is limited not to mention everyone plays so not necessarily the best will be covering the best. I bet your TE is an outstanding prospect/talent, but since you guys might run the ball this year it might be better to red shirt him? Thats jus an Idea from a buckeye tho!

Um, if they are running the ball then he might be useable as a second TE, tho he probably needs time to develop his blocking.

Holmes is not a sub-4.3 guy, but is plenty fast. And I wouldn't say that we'll be hard to stop in a double tight set, with their outstanding DTs. Our strength lies in the psasing game.

I couldn't agree with you more. He only weighs 220 right now and has the ability to be a david thomas clone that can jump higher.

Jreal - why do we need another recieving threat from the TE spot. I know that Bo gave us a great 1 2 punch last year but that was a luxery not a necessity. We have a plethora of young WR's and David Thomas, I really don't see the need to have Finley touch the field this year. However, if he does then it means he is REALLY good so i guess I wouldn't be that upset.

Agreed. I'm all for getting the best players on the field but you really do your program a disservice when you don't shirt these guys and give them a chance to adjust to college ball. There will always be the Ginns of the world that can help immediately, but for every Ginn there is another kid who would stay the full 5yrs and be able to help you much more as a 5th yr. senior. Especially a kid that isn't projected to be an eventual first rounder. These kids have much to gain by getting stronger and learning for a year.

Perfect example, Reggie McNeal and Vince Young. McNeal burned his redshirt year and played as a true freshman. Now he has one year left to help his team. Vince still has two years of eligibility and we expect him to progress alot in the passing game this year. If he stays, this puts us in a great position both this year and next while A&M has one year left with their QB.

yeah like I said I'd be great if the younger players do but I know I'd love to see kids red shirt. Especially in OSU/Texas's case this year because they'll both have so much talent and depth. I mean for us not to redshirt Hartline who had 100 yards recieving in his all star game would be dumb because we have plenty of talented recievers and I see that as the case with your Young TE who will be lobby'n for playing time. While he might be physically ready to play he won't know the sets/formations and those things. Thats actually probably the toughest thing for a college football player to do is pick the game up mentally.

It's a good comparison by CFBNews. Adding up all the position ratings gives the Buckeyes an edge of 1 and a half points, not that it means anything.

I don't necessarily think we need two receiving tight end threats, but this seems to be the match-up Vince prefers. The bigger target, on seam routes and out routes. Scaife and Thomas were clutch for us last year and the double tight package was nice to throw out of. If Sweed can step up the way I feel he should, we will be okay in this regard. I personally don't expect Shipley to contribute much until midway through the season. Sweed and Jones have got to make things happen in the passing game. I think it's way too much to ask of a Red shirt frosh, coming off an ACL, to come in and be the best downfield receiving threat vs a team the calibre of OSU. If he comes in and plays well, it would be a bonus in my opinion. The same goes for Cosby. I don't expect either of these players to have a huge impact vs. OSU.

According to a formula developed by my good friend, xrayrandy, it means there is a statistical probability that it will rain in Columbus on September 10th.
