Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

You do realize that Texas can win this game without completely shutting down Ohio State's offense right? I mean, that's basically what you're saying....that Texas will dominate what looks to be a great college offensive team and prove to everybody why their D is number one.

I guess what I'm saying is, I read the homer in your post and pass it off as just being a homer who thinks everything UT is better than everything else.

Might be hard to make a case of that when Smith, Ginn, and Co. run up 30+ points...
A lot of you Buckeye posters are predicting that your offense will put up more than 30 points. While I don't doubt that there might be a possibility, I would like to know where you guys exactly think these points will be coming from.

You guys had outstanding starting field position in every quarter except the fourth, with an overall starting field position at the Ohio State 42 - pretty good.

The point: even consistently with great field position, the offense struggled in putting up TDs. I guess it is your perspective on whether this was caused by the Texas defense or from tOSU offensive ineptitude. It is my firm belief that the Texas defense did a great job in bending, but not breaking. This year, I really doubt (hopefully anyways) that you guys will get the type of field position that you got last year. As already stated earlier, our coaches are saying that this defense will be better than last year. For me, there is no reason for me to doubt what the coaches say. I also believe that in every place that Chizik has coached, his defenses have improved in his 2nd year.

Also to keep in mind:
1. Vince gave you two interceptions in Texas territory.
2. While I do not doubt that your defense will be good, you will not have the type of production that Hawk was able to provide. Here's what I'm talking about:

Hawk was an absolute beast who account for 1 FF, 1 FR, returning an interception 24 yards, and 2 sacks.
It is one thing to make a tackle, but to go that far and beyond just absolutely blows my mind. I believe that just being tOSU you guys will reload at most of the other positions.

3. I believe last year against Notre Dame you had the greatest offensive explosion that I've ever seen (I also have not watched too many tOSU games either). However it must not be understated how poor the Notre Dame defense is:

Total Defense-75th in nation, 396.92 yds/game
Pass Defense-103rd in nation, 264.58 yds/game
Rushing Defense-34th in nation, 132.2 yds/game

In all fairness, I believe these stats were taken after the Fiesta Bowl. Bottom line, their defense was horrible. I think your game plan could simply have been for Holmes and especially Ginn to go deep as fast as they could and you guys would score on every possession. Regardless, in that game you guys scored 34 points (I know you could have scored more, but that is besides the point).


Now taking in all of these thoughts, I would like to know why so many Buckeyes believe your team will score more than 30 points?

First of all nice post.

Secondly, our offense the second half of the year was much better than at the beginning. Troy Smith didnt get many snaps before the Texas game, thanks to being demoted to second string during practices and having to sit for the 1st game.

Im not that concerned about our defense, simply because neither of the Texas' quarterbacks have ever thrown a pass in college.

Chris Wells in the red zone instead of Pittman or a Smith option is worth at least a few points. Our #2 QB played half that game and Smith was in for the first time since the previous michigan game, and we still put up 21. Not to mention, having a tight end that doesn't have the dropsies.

UT and PSU fans love to bring up their defenses as proof that Troy can't handle their defenses, but he wasn't much better against SDSU's meager defense. There was a noticeable change in his play at QB as 05 progressed, from progressing thru his reads, having poise in the pocket, and trusting his arm over his feet. Our visitors should keep in mind that Troy had 1st team reps for part of the last two seasons, and no other time until this offseason. It's not a stretch to think he will continue to improve.
