Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I'll get over myself when you answer my first question in both posts... perhaps you'll answer bb73.
It sounds like you have something of substance here rob, so I'd like to hear the source. It is possible to debate your side of the argument without insulting me.
Again, it will have an impact, but it won't have a 'very large impact' on scoring as you suggested.

05 NCAA Kickoff Return Average
by team: 20.8 yards (calculated by averaging the team return averages... I ignored the disparity in returns per team)
96 out of 117 teams average < 23 yards per return

Even if they are catching it at the 5, that still doesn't give them great field position. If there are stats showing that starting at the 25-30 vs the 20 makes a huge difference in scoring then that would be a good read.

in your rebuttal, you are changing the argument to 'did X have any effect on the kicking game?' which is not relevant to my stance. I think it will have an effect, but not a huge effect.
really :roll2:

First off you should be using median not average. Second the source about Pettrey comes from an insider Im quoting what he says about Pettrey in practice.

Average is not as accurate as the median. I think this will have as much impact as moving the kick off back did for the first few seasons.

Did Huston ever "squib kick" at the end of the game or half to prevent a big return? That might skew the numbers a bit too.

I hate squib kicking by the way.

C'mon now, you remember the end of the first half in the 'Shoe last year, don't you? He kicked a high-and-wide kick, looking for a fair catch or a screw-up by an inexperienced returner. tOSU had a personal foul tacked onto the play, giving Texas great field position. That led to Pino's field goal that brushed the inside of the upright at the end of the half.

Thanks for making me painfully report this. :tongue2:

Oops. :bonk:
Memory is a bit hazy. It's been almost a whole month since I watched a replay of that game.

Okay, I should qualify my above statement. I hate it when TEXAS squib kicks. It's okay when other teams do it though, especially against us.

QB for Texas

A reporter said on the radio that the Texas staff is enamored with Snead as QB. he has a strong arm, but more importantly, shows great huddle presence, and to look for him to win the job by mid-season. This is just one guy's opinion, but just wanted to throw this in.

I keep hearing this too and one thing comes to mind every time. If Snead is their guy why are we gonna wait till mid season to throw him to the fire. I will take a loss to tOSU if it means that we increase our chances at the Big 12 title, which should be our goal this year

I think this board will get at least 99% agreement on that.

Yeah, didn't figure i'd get too much of a negative reaction from the buck fans...really though a win over the buckeys puts us on track for another special season while a win over ou would put us in the driver seat. However, if I had to pick one, I clearly take OU and the chance at a Big 12 title and another BCS birth. I would consider that a great season with this team(and by team I mean rookie Quarterback).

The more I think about it, the more I think that Snead will win the starting job from day one. His two 4th down completions in the spring game is what really stands out to me. That, and he almost matched Colt's ability to run the offense after 10 weeks in school. With around 100 informal practices between spring and the start of fall drills, I think he will surpass Colt.

It is also similar to the Applewhite & Simms situation where Mack chose potential over experience. This case is a little different in that Colt has no game experience, making the choice of Snead easier.

Fortunately the team and coaches aren't interested in trading an early loss for a later win. The QB who the coaches think gives Texas the best chance to win will start the game, and I'll trust Mack on that.

I thought I would pass along that it is possible that this game will be the biggest matchup ever at DKR in terms of combined team rankings. While Texas has a few 1 Vs 2 matchups, the best at DKR is 1 (UT) Vs 4 (Arkansas) in 1970. That was the only game at DKR where both teams where in the top 5.

Of course this is one consequence of playing Oklahoma at a neutral site.

High Lonesome sounds like Woody!

In the old, old days, Woody didn't really care about the 'pre-season' - that is to say the games that preceded the Big Ten games. He'd take a loss just to get the new team some experience. Understand that he didn't schedule the superstars, TCU, Pitt, Texas Tech, SMU, even Stanford and Cal. But he had his quarterback, line(s), and backs all primed to win the Big Ten.

High Lonesome recognizes the strategy also. Lose to OSU, get the new q-back some experience (big time), and when Okie U rolls around, the team will have jelled. Win that one, plus the rest of the others in Big 12, beat the survivor in the North Section, and it's a BCS bowl (and a $14 million pay-out). Pretty crafty.

Hard to take an early season loss and make the championship game, but hey, anything can happen. Maybe Mack Brown can lobby again (remember how he lobbied for the Rose against Michigan - when Cal was more worthy) and they'll be in Tempe.......Bobby Bowden is the master of 'why I should get the national championship' , but Mack isn't too far behind.

All I can say is, :gobucks3: :osu4: :banger:

First, I am hardly conceding the game to the bucks as I personally feel that snead gives us the best chance to win. Second, if we are to lose to tOSU then I would like to have gained from it and I believe that a large gain can be made from giving our qb of the future starting experience in that game.

and a Very big 3rd is- If anyone can ever give me a good reason why Cal was "more worthy" than Texas to play in the rose bowl (other than pac10/big10 ties) i would love to hear them.
