Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Why is the gun stuff such a big deal? This is Texas, damn near everyone has a least one gun. Heck since the crime rates shot up with the Katrina refugees even the lefties are getting CHL and carrying.

Maybe out in the rural areas of Texas but not in the cities. I've lived in Austin all my life and it's always unusual to me when I meet someone who owns a gun. It is by far from typical...at least in the city.

Gatewood was in the back seat with Brown sleeping. Aaron Harris was in the front by himself driving the car. According to the arrest warrent, the officer found the joint in the front next to the driver's seat. Texas law says all within "common area" have to be charged with possession.

Actually Gatewood was in the front passenger seat, per the arrest warrant.

Arrest Warrant said:
We then went back up and made contact with the passengers. We first woke up and detained the rear seat passenger identified as:
Brown, Tarell 1-6-85
After detaining Brown Sgt. Strawn informed me that gun in Brown’s lap was loaded 9mm handgun. I also detained the front seat
passenger identified as:
Gatewood, Tyrell 09-27-84

Anyone surprised that we are a 2 1/2 point "dog" to Texas?

okay, something just struck me:
Authorities located a "blunt" marijuana cigarette weighing 1.1 ounces under the front seat of the car
okay, the average cigarette sized J weighs around one gram...
there are TWENTY-EIGHT grams in an ounce...
that was one ENORMOUS, GIGANTIC, TITANIC, COLOSSAL, CHEECH and CHONG SIZED, and any other word for STUPENDOUSLY, INCOPREHENSIBLY HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE blunt... OMFG... no wonder two guys were passed out, and Harris was swerving...

Officer: "can i see your license?"
Cheech: "isn't it back there on the bumper?"
Officer, to Chong: "what is your name, sir?"
Chong: ***pukes all over Cheech's lap***
Cheech: "he says his name is Raaaalph."

:slappy:

edit: dammit... just read the police report... the blunt was 1.1 grams, not 1.1 ounces... bummer... that ruined my fun...

Or as Karl Spackler would call it, a "Bob Marley Joint."

It's not my problem that the people setting the odds are idiots who have forgotten that defense is important. Today's news won't affect the final score significantly.

So, you think that our holding an offense with the top returning RB in the country and the QB with the highest completion percentage last year to 12 points is as impressive to holding a 2-9 Sun Belt team to seven? Also, your offense scored 56 points against the 101st-ranked defense from last year, while ours was two goal-line fumbles from 49 points on the 52nd ranked defense. Our defense pretty much shut down the country's most accurate passer, so you'll probably will have to rely on your running game to move the ball, which plays into our strength.

Does anyone really believe that ESPN and the press would be screaming murder if any Ohio State first-string player was found in these circumstances?

Well, Haw didn't attract much more attention last year. Neither did the affair with Benson and Taylor being questioned about assault or whatever that was before the Rose Bowl but I don't think that's the point anyway.

I can't see any conspiracy in the way the media is pursuing this.

Is this young man someone in the wrong place at the wrong time, who innocently picked up a gun, or is this a young thug with a future about to get really ugly? Is Mack Brown collecting facts, as he says, or is he really just waiting to see how much the press calls for him to suspend Tarell Brown? What is the balance between integrity and justice for all of the involved parties and the Texas team?

Quite frankly, we can only speculate and it seems certain that Ohio State and Texas fans will see it differently.

But, one thing is clear, if Brown doesn't suspend this player and the player is as guilty as it sounds to me, this problem will come back. Only, next time, it will be a bigger problem. And it will be other players too.

This is a critical moment for Texas football.

Just guessing here... but because its against the law (if you dont have a concealed weapon permit)

Im reasonably sure Mack Brown (and any HC for that matter) would consider such behavior as a major break of team rules.

A chance for redemption

COLUMBUS (AP) — No motivational speeches are needed for Ohio State's game against Texas on Saturday night.
One year certainly hasn't erased all recollections of the last meeting.
"We remember last year," defensive lineman David Patterson said grimly.
No. 1 Ohio State dispatched Northern Illinois 35-12 on Saturday, building a 28-0 lead in just over a quarter and coasting to the finish.
That was enough to allow the Buckeyes to finally acknowledge that they have the No. 3 Longhorns on their minds.
"We've got to win," center Doug Datish said. "It's going to be a great atmosphere."
Last year remembered
A year ago, the second-ranked Longhorns met the fourth-ranked Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium, also in week two of the season. Before a loud and raucous Ohio Stadium-record crowd of 105,565, Texas quarterback Vince Young threw a 24-yard go-ahead touchdown to Limas Sweed with 2:37 left in a 25-22 victory.
"A lot of us remember that feeling," said Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis.
The Longhorns kept up the drumbeat of wins, beating Southern California in the Rose Bowl to capture their first national championship since 1969. The Buckeyes have spent the last 360-plus days thinking how their own 10-2 season might have taken a similar route had they been able to beat the Longhorns.
Texas whipped North Texas 56-7 on Saturday to set the stage for another showdown. The Buckeyes say they can't wait.
Smith is ready
"It's going to be a great experience," said quarterback Troy Smith, who completed 18-of-25 passes for 297 yards and touchdowns of 5 and 58 yards to Ted Ginn Jr. and 15 yards to Anthony Gonzalez in the victory over Northern Illinois. "They got out of here last year with a win. It's a great team with great tradition. I just wish Vince was still there."
Antonio Pittman, who rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on Saturday, said he welcomed the chance to finally get around to the rematch.
"This is something we have waited for a year. Now we need to go to their house and take one back," Pittman said.
The Buckeyes built a 28-0 lead and then squandered several prime scoring opportunities against Northern Illinois. They missed two field goals and lost two fumbles inside the opposing 10-yard line.
"We'll have to step it up a lot, we learned today," Pittman said Saturday.
Ginn caught four passes for 123 yards and the two touchdowns, adding two punt returns for 44 yards and two kickoff returns for 25 more yards.
He said it hurt to watch Texas go on to win the national championship last year, boosted by the landmark win in Columbus.
"We lost last year and that says it all," he said. "Next week, just like last year — what a great game it should be."
Opener left questions
An opener provides a chance to gauge a team's progress while determining what problem areas require the most additional work. In that regard, the victory over Northern Illinois was an unqualified success. The Buckeyes have lots of work to do on their kicking game and run defense.
At the same time, the Buckeyes recognize that the first game won't necessarily prepare them for what they'll encounter on Saturday night.
"We took a step — now, the next step is higher, we understand that — but we took a step," coach Jim Tressel said.
Last year's loss provides all the incentive the Buckeyes need.
"Hey, they're the national champs," defensive lineman Vernon Gholston said. "They're sitting on top of the world."

Not at all. Texas is still a good team and they're playing at home. The college rankings, especially for the first couple weeks, are all abstract guesses of how people believe a team will perform.

I believe the Buckeyes have the talent to win, but if both teams show up to play, there's no predicting who comes out on top.
