Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Up to this point in their respective career's, they are pretty similar. People here who think he is as good as Vince are fooling themselves, but he has the opportunity to be just as good or better. And that fact is something Texas fans just aren't willing to accept. Take a look at what Troy has done in the Fiesta Bowl and twice against Michigan. 350+ yards and a win in each of them. Troy has gotten better with every snap he has had at Ohio State. He is one of the favorites for the Heisman this year and is poised to lead his team on a run at the national championship. So there are comparisons to Vince, as much as Texas fans don't want to admit it.
Does TS have that intangible leadership quality to lead his team to victory like VY did? From the few games I've seen with him...yes.

Does TS pass as well as VY did? Yes.

Does TS run as well as VY did? No freaking way. He's a good runner but nowhere near VY's league. None of the highlight runs I've seen of TS have reminded me the many VY runs I've witnessed.

You know who's as good as VY? The next person who passes for 3,000 yards, runs for 1,000 yards and leads his team to a 13-0 record and national championship.:wink2:

Don't get me wrong...I think TS is good and worthy of Heisman consideration. Do I think he's better than VY? Well, TS is going to need to do a lot work this year to convince me of that.

WEAPONS:

TEXAS; CHARLES

TOSU; SMITH, PITTMAN, GINN, GONZO, WELLS, HALL

TEXAS STRATEGY; RUN CHARLES, THROW SHORT PASSES

TOSU STRATEGY; SPREAD THE FIELD, RUN OVER THRU AND AROUND WITH PITT, SMITH, GINN, AND WELLS. THROW SHORT, MEDIUM, AND LONG WITH A QBACK THAT CAN THROW ALL PASSES WITH CONFIDENCE TO GINN , GONZO, AND HALL.
ANY QUESTIONS?

:box:

Wow...this so sounds like last year when buckeye fans said "your receivers suck...VY can't pass...all we have to do is load up against the run and we win!"

I'm not saying that UT is a shoe-in to win this game. What I am saying is that I just don't think we'll be as one-dimensional as buckeye fans predicted last year and this year.

you've got xray, we've got ...

I'd agree with you that a wing it all over the shop OSU, fall down flat UT assessment is at best simplistic. A great deal of ball control mixed in with the pass, that's my expectations.

Texas' most important weapons are on defense, and no-one here should forget that. And their offense is good even without VY or Ramonce Taylor from last years squad - just not likely anywhere near last years all-world performance levels.

Our young D will have to exceed some fans fears, and match their capabilities early for this game.

Thank you...yes the defense has been working hard this summer because they know they have a bigger responsibility this year with the new QBs. The focus this year on D is to get more interceptions. Last year's defense had their hands on a lot of balls but let most of them get away.

Saturday Texas Scrimage Report

Colt McCoy was nearly perfect today. He had two drives against the #2 defense and the team scored 2 touchdowns. He went 5 of 6 for 68 yards. If I didn't know his class I would say he played like a Jr or Sr with a years worth of starts under his belt. The comparisons to Major Applewhite are well deserved.

Snead played more like a freshman struggling a lot against the #1 defense while guiding the 2s and a little against the 2s while playing with the 1s. He showed great arm strength but forced his passes and didn't seem comfortable in the pocket. He got picked by a freshman safety Robert Joseph. Our other freshman QB Sherrod Harris is an exciting player. He has a great arm, great speed and had a good handle on the offense playing with 2s and 3s against 2s and 3s. He has "it". If all the QBs started at UT at the same time, my money would be on Harris to start, but as it is, Colt has the job all but sown up. I really don't expect much of a QB rotation until the games are already well in hand.

Sweed was the leading receiver and looked great on 43 and 16 yard catches. Selvin young had 4 carries for 56 yards and a TD He was very fast breaking one off tackle run for good yardage and cutting back on a zone read run that the defense defended well, but left the backside open for a 24 yard gain. Charles also looked sharp with 3 carries for 31 yards. Henry Melton struggled but the # 4 RB (likely #1 FB) Ogbannaya did well. The other wideouts did well, but didn't get that many opportunities.

The 5th spot on the offensive line is still up in the air as Dockery was in at RG for the first series and Ulatowski was at RT for the second. I think Ulatowski looks better, but they will both likely play a lot with Blolock switching between RG and RT. The first team line was solid the whole scrimmage.

The first team defense did an excellent job stuffing the #2 offense. Robison was easily the defensive player of the game, constantly disrupting plays and getting a blocked FG. Derek Lokey made a couple big plays at the NT spot. The defensive line did such a great job, that the back 7 didn't have to work too hard.I think this will be the best Texas defense since 1983.

Our freshman kicker Hunter Lawrence kicked a line drive on his first kickoff, and had a fairly low FG attempt blocked, so the spot looks a little shaky. Greg Johnson punted great with a 48 yarder that was covered perfectly forcing a fair catch, a 42 yarder that was intentionally kicked out of bounds (what I hope we do against tOSU), and another punt that the gunner (Aaron Ross) caught inside the ten. Greg Johnsons kickoffs were also great, so I hope he kicks off at least until we get past tOSU.

Offensively and defensively they stuck with plays we used a lot last year, so they were avoiding showing anything new. We probably won't see everything until the tOSU game.

You are going a little overboard in your whole TS vs. VY argument--I'd be surprised if anyone on this site said that TS is better than VY. Just settle down. But your homerism regarding the TS/VY comparison begs my input. I agree that VY has shown a better ability to run than TS has as yet. However, I find it laughable that you use such colorful language (e.g., "No freaking way," and "nowhere near VY's league") when it comes to running skills, yet you merely credit TS for being only as good a passer as VY. Come on. TS has already shown that he is a much, much better passer than VY was in college, and I think your language in comparing their running skills are also applicable in comparing their running skills, only with TS getting the credit.

Thanks for the report. I'd like to know how McCoy did against the #1 defense. He won't be facing a D equivalent to the UT #2 D on 9/9 after all.

awful lot of over-the-top statements coming out of the woodwork...

Best buckeye, your recent posts are becoming quite similar to those from the poster formerly known as UTMNC. Texas has NO other weapons besides Charles, yet OSU can count Roy Hall? Either you're ignoring reality, or you didn't bother to watch the game last year. Limas Sweed and Billy Pittman were bigger weapons against OSU than Roy Hall has proven to be in 4 years.

Westchester, Texas' 06 offense is not going to look anywhere near as bad as the 03 osu offense, regardless of how green their QBs may be. Clarett played on a pathetic offense in 02, and was followed up by the worst starting OSU RB in decades. I love Krenzel and he was clutch, but not productive. Selvin Young & Jamaal Charles are leaps and bounds ahead of Lydell.

These TS-VY comparisons are very premature. I love his potential, and think he is going to have a huge year... but until he proves it against Texas, he's not in VY's ballpark (who is among the greatest QBs of his generation).

xray, I'll take your silence on the hawk int (which has been brought up about 6 times so far) to be a silent admission that you're stats were clearly bogus :yow1:

I haven't read those posts, I've been busy. I don't know what stats you are referencing. I just see TS Vs VY crap, that I would rather not comment on.

As for Colts play against the one's the reports from Wednesdays scrimmage is that he was effective against the first team too.

the bolded post came 2 minutes after the one above it from you... I called your stats (not you) stupid, tho deceptive might have been a better word choice.
the ultimate refutation of xrays stupid stats comes from his own fingers... brilliant!
Check the box score before you call someone stupid. OSU had 0 QB pressures.
thank you for continuing to prove me point... I guess AJ paid VY to throw him the ball for no good reason.

Good luck getting Randy to admit that his posts are even close to homeristic. I think its been tried many times. I know I tried with the ridiculous 4 of UTs widesouts(this didn't include the TE he managed to name them) will have more than 40 catches this year even considering that no UT wide reciever had over 40 last year. He conveniently ignores these realities. It must be great fun living in an imaginary world.

I know it's been brought up before... but this screen is simply ridiculous. There are scoreboards this large, but not screens (at least not in the US, I think Japan is fighting back).
