Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I'm not sure I get the point. UTs opponents had 14 sacks and 7 QB hurries all last season, and several of those were against Nordgren and Matt McCoy. In comparison Ohio State gave up 18 sacks and 29 QB Hurries. On the flip side Texas had 34 sacks and 116 QB hurries.

Opponents did not pressure Vince much at all last year and they won't pressure the QBs much this year either.

To say we didn't pressure Young is a pretty arrogant statement.

Yeah, because Vince Young taking off with the ball the millisecond someone came close to putting pressure on him had nothing to do with the lack of "pressure" on your QB last year. I'm sure that will carry over to this year just fine. :roll1:

And yes, I do know that your offensive line will be very good this year, but Vince Young was a special scrambler, to pretend like that had no impact on the QB pressures and sacks you gave up last year is quite delusional.

that's the understatement of the century.

the point was that just because you show the offense something, it doesn't mean they run it flawlessly every time. i love how you can make blanket statements about what will or won't happen next year, basing it all on stats from last year.

the stats last year showed that texas won 100% of their games. that means this year will be no different. but wait! last year they defied their previous year's winning percentage. HOW COULD THIS BE?!?!?!?!?!

HOW COULD THIS BE?!?!?!?!?!
Because all the recruiting hauls by Mack Brown are finally paying dividends. The backups are better than the All-American starters -- they should be, they'll be All-American's too. Hell, they've got so many running backs they're converting the rest of the ones in the state to LB's, which shouldn't be a problem, since they all have WR speed.

Duh!

Longhorns should rustle up another oneby Mike Kern

<!-- begin body-content --> So, who's No. 1?
And does it really matter, when the national championship game is still more than 4 months away? It's only an opinion, based on projections. But since America needs to know, here we go again.
Almost nobody goes wire-to-wire anyway. You can look it up. And most years, the preseason polls and the final polls bear very little resemblance. Yet that doesn't stop us from trying to do our best Carnac impersonation. It's fun. And never forget that often it's not about who has the best team, but which team has the more conducive schedule. (The Associated Press will unveil its preseason Top 25 later today.)
Besides, it's mostly the usual suspects. Generally, it's safe to go with the defending national champion to start, unless there's a good reason not to. And the loss of Vince Young might prove to be just that. We'll see early, when the Longhorns host Ohio State on Sept. 9. And did you know that the last time there was a No.1 vs. No. 2 game in the regular season was 1996, when Florida lost at Florida State by a field goal in mid-November. Fortunately for the Gators, they got a rematch in the Sugar Bowl, where they beat the Seminoles by a bunch to claim their lone national title.
So for now, take it for what it's worth. And let those arguments begin. I already can see those e-mails from the Clemson, Georgia and LSU fans, to name just three. See you on Jan. 8 in the Arizona desert.
Mike Kern's Top 15 appears Mondays in the Daily News during the college football season.
