Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

i would assume that it will be a very small spread with the bucks slightly favored as I think that you will be ranked higher
it will be very interesting, I agree with the small spread... but will we be the favorite? I guess 05 OSU might be a higher rated home team than 06 texas, but it would not shock me to see Texas the slight favorite.

From a where's the money coming argument, I think tOSU will be favored. The general public seems to have bought into the media's vision of the demise of Texas football in the post Vince Young era.

Vegas doesnt care what the media thinks. That is who makes the spread and tOSU has struggled at nite on the road, so you guys will be favored, just b/c numbers point that way.

I dont understand what your saying.

Texas was easily a 3 loss team last year without Vince Young.
I think that we would have lost to you guys, and possibly not come back against OkieSt, but I don't think that we would have lost any others. However, the question marks at the beginning of last season were the WRs and RBs, but I think those have been sufficiently answered. We have the unenviable task of replacing VY, but our RB situation has drastically improved with the emergence of JC and hopefully a fully healthy Selvin, our WRs as well. We lost Harris in the middle but have a stable of quick LBs, our secondary drops off with Huff and Ced Griffin, but MiGriffin has come on the scene in a big way, as have Ross and Brown. We still have a very talented line, and Tweedie and Finley will come close to filling DThomas void. So, I think that minus the QB position, our team is much better at the offensive skill positions, and that our LBs and D-Line will be stronger, our three ends have to be considered close to the top in the nation. Barring a huge mistake by one of these teams in weak one, this game will be either a pick' em, or Texas favored by one to two points based on home field. I will probably put nothing more than vcash on this mutha though.

The VY factor has been worked to death here, but let me add even more: It is impossible to put into numbers what He was worth to our team. In terms of intangibles, how do you compute it? How many rushers laid back, tired of him dancing past them. How many deep safeties came up when he rolled out, leaving receivers in no coverage positions? How many defenders looked like participants on the final round of a 13-day dance marathon in the fourth quarter from chasing Him around? How many old UT teams would have given up in the fourth quarter, as opposed to last year, when they always felt we had a chance? Yes, the skill players are still there, but there is officially a leadership void that had better be filled, and quick, if we want to compete with OSU. The frosh qb's? mcCoy seems like sweet kid, but beyond that, I would be worried. Snead seems like he has a little bit more swagger, but it's going to take every thing they have mentally to bring us the victory we crave.

One of the most objective posts from an "outsider" I've read on BP...GPA for you.

If my post seems more objective, and thoughtful, there's a good reason--I had margaritas at lunch. Now I'm back at work, and I had better stay from that really cute girl on our team, lest I say something I may regret later. (actually, I work at an ad agency and most of the women are really cute)

Let's hope that some of that rubbed off on the remaining players from last year. I agree with you on the intangilbe aspect. Out in pasadena in January, I just remember the feeling I had of not if, but when UT would take the lead once they got the ball back after 4th and 2. I don't know if I ever will have that great of a feeling of confidence in the team ever again. I am just hoping that this team will have enough talent and luck to not be put in as many positions where we have to have a VY style comeback (a la USC, tOSU, and OkieSt), more of a team like Auburn from two years ago, that relied on some great RBs a good QB, and solid play from the rest of the offense, but was dominant on defense. The leadership void does need to be addressed, but it might be more of a team effort, and a team effort still won't come close to the VY factor.
