Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I will say this, the game of football has changed since the bucks last won their championship. Offense is king.

The game hasn't changed a bit since 2002...not one iota. Miami, Texas Tech, and a couple others were putting up just as huge numbers offensively as was USC and Texas last year. A great defense will nearly always shut down a great offense.

In my opinion change (offensive or defensive) is what makes College Football the best game in town. I have been so far impressed with the OSU coaches adjusting to the talent. Mack Brown adjustments with V Young is one of the reasons, he is wearing his first National Championship Ring. It is going to be a hell of a good ball game and as a fan very excited.

The Rams are about the only team I can recall recently that won the SB that was a team of virtually ALL offense. (And they damn near lost to Tennessee, who's Defense slowed down the attack quite well)

I was just thinking about that Ram team before you posted. That D was pretty mediocre, but it's easier to play defense when you're ahead by 2-3td's because of the offense. Behind 24-7 at halftime? You gotta throw the rest of the game (especially in the pros with fewer clock stoppages).

That team might be the one exception to the cliche. Their offense was just so much better that their defense never had to come up with great performances or clutch plays.

And when you look back on the Rose Bowl.......... even though both defenses got shredded most of the game, the one that came up with a clutch stop won the game. That might be a corollary to "Defense wins championships"

Team A has an out of this world offense and a mediocre defense
Team B has a great offense and a good defense

Team B should win, and they did.

I think Mili's right; the game hasn't changed one bit since '02. It's always been the case that balance is the key to winning a championship. Sometimes the offense is the superior unit, sometimes the defense is, but it is always the case that the lesser unit is, at minimum, solid. That being said, I think a team with a decent offense and a dominant defense has a better shot than a team with a decent defense and dominant offense. As a coach of mine once said, you can score all the points in the world and still be beaten, but if your opponent can't score, you cannot lose.

I think its more like a mature Vince Young surrounded by a good defense is what wins championships.

Ill say this again, no Vince Young last seaon and texas loses at least 3 games. Ohio State, Oklahoma State and USC (of course they wouldnt have played USC with 2 losses so I do understand that.)

IIRC, that Rams defense wasn't very good in the typical defensive stats you would normally look at, but they were freakishly good at getting turnovers...Just a "FWIW"...

Point to what you will, whether it is the fact that the more talented players play on that side or that the rule changes benefit them, the fact is that offensive football teams are winning...

We are a fan base that believes in solid D, but let's say that you're right HL. Then, given that Ohio State may be returning the most potent offense in football, things look a bit better for Ohio State than many here think, eh?

This isn't really relevant to any discussion currently going on, but I bought NCAA 2007 today and played Texas. Colt McCoy ran the read option and it made me laugh. They apparently didn't update the playbook in the game. :tongue2:

I cant wait for the OSU-UT game. I recently moved here to Columbus to take a job....after going to school at the University of Tennessee. I was raised an OSU fan in the south, though, because my grandfather went to college here. Just wanted to say...glad to be around some fellow Buckeye fans!!

Let's see...maybe it's because he will not have missed the previous bowl game, will have started the opener prior to the Texas game, and will have practiced the entire spring and fall camps, completely opposite of last year.

To imply that Smith will have the same degree of rust despite the total difference in situation is flat out stupid.

Speaking of flat out stupid.... When/ Where did imply that Troy Smith will have the same degree of rust as the previous year?
