Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I found this list of recruits over the past 4 year on hornfans and thought you would find it interesting since it indicates that Tressel appears to be doing the most with the least as far as Rivals rankings goes. Mack isn't far behind.
xray, check my compilation of 5-year coaching stats here:

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21224

I have tracked incoming recruiting ranks, win %, and nfl draft picks from 2001 to present. Where Tressel is really off the charts is NFL draft production (considering the comparitively low recruiting ranks in relation to other powerhouse programs). Overall, when it comes to "doing more with less," the guys who still manage to pull a career .650+ winning % in a major BCS conference despite rarely or never recruiting Top 25 classes are tough to beat: Mike Leach, Mike Bellotti, Tom O'Brien, Frank Beamer, Kirk Ferentz and Tommy Tuberville all rate very highly.

Rather than look at just one interval like five years I did a similar compilation of the top 4 winningest (coaching Div1A only) coaches.

1 2005 1) 13-Brown 2) 12-Carroll 3) 11-Several
2 2004-2005 1) 25-Carroll 2) 24-Brown 3) 22-Tubberville 4) 21-Meyer
3 2003-2005 1) 37-Carroll 2) 34-Brown 3) 33-Hawkins 4) 32-Stoops
4 2002-2005 1) 48-Carroll 2) 45-Brown, Hawkins 4) 44-Richt, Stoops
5 2001-2005 1) 56-Brown 2) 55-Stoops 3) 54-Carroll 4) 53-Coker, Hawkins
6 2000-2005 1) 68-Stoops 2) 65-Brown 3) 58-Beamer 4) 55-Bowden
7 1999-2005 1) 75-Stoops 2) 74-Brown 3) 69-Beamer 4) 67-Bowden
8 1998-2005 1) 83-Brown 2) 78-Bowden 3) 78-Beamer 4) 74-Fullmer
9 1997-2005 1) 93-Brown 2) 89-Bowden 3) 85-Fullmer, Beamer, Carr
10 1996-2005 1) 103-Brown 2) 100-Bowden 3) 95-Fullmer, Beamer
11 1995-2005 1) 110-Brown, Bowden 3) 106-Fullmer 4) 105-Beamer
12 1994-2005 1) 120-Bowden 2) 118-Brown 3) 114-Fullmer 4) 113-Beamer
13 1993-2005 1) 132-Bowden 2) 128-Brown 3) 124-Fullmer 4) 122-Beamer
14 1992-2005 1) 143-Bowden 2) 137-Brown 3) 128-Fullmer 4) 124-Beamer
15 1991-2005 1) 154-Bowden 2) 144-Brown 3) 129-Beamer 4) 125-Paterno
16 1990-2005 1) 164-Bowden 2) 150-Brown 3) 135-Beamer 4) 134-Paterno
17 1989-2005 1) 174-Bowden 2) 151-Brown 3) 142-Paterno 4) 141-Beamer
18 1988-2005 1) 185-Bowden 2) 152-Brown 3) 147-Paterno 4) 144-Spurrier, Beamer
19 1987-2005 1) 196-Bowden 2) 158-Brown 3) 155-Paterno 4) 149-Spurrier
20 1986-2005 1) 203-Bowden 2) 167-Paterno 3) 162-Brown 4) 145-DeBerry

Due to the nature of the data it has a strong bias to coaches with recent success. And, if you include non Div1A coaching victories Tressel would be all over this list, largely due to those 14 win seasons.

Note: I don't recall if this is my most recent list, it may have 2 or 3 small errors, but it gives you the general idea.

The argument for Ohio high school football being better than Texas high school football is a little off base in that article though. Tyler Lee was the 5A state champs, right? Wouldn't that equate to a smaller division than what Colerain plays in (Div. I)?

No 5a is the largest schools we have but the notion that they were the best that texas had to offer is laughable at best. South Lake Carrol has been one of if not the most dominant team in texas for the last 5+ years. Lee didn't even make the playoffs last year

I understand this argument; however, they were willing to come here and they were the reigning state champs, it's not like they got someone from BFE, TX to come up here and show them who is boss :wink2:

Personally, I don't think that games like that prove anything, HS teams can vary pretty wildly year to year and I don't think there is any chance Ohio is as deep as Texas, the state is much bigger and they have just as much passion for the sport as we do

very true

i agree again....The thing with texas highschool football is not the quality, which is high, its the passion. people live and die by "Their" team as if it was the superbowl. i am sure it is much the same in ohio. Like you said, Quality will very greatly year to year in highschool, but in Texas(and presumably ohio) the passion never dies

I can attest to that. My children's school, Westlake Austin, is consumed by being great. The school has a huge stadium, state of the art facilities, a giant diamond vsions screen. All the games sell out. Drew Brees graduated from the school, and the school turns out college stars left and right. Still, the team is hampered by the high suburban factor--the high standard of living precludes minority children from attending.Right now, I'm shooting commercials in Los Angeles at the school SI voted the TOP High School program in the country last year--Long Beach Polytechnic. The banners hang in droves from the gym rafters. The school is VERY diverse, with many Samoans, African Americans, and everyone else. Very cool.

Do they still hold up the "We're White, We're Rich, We're Westlake" signs :wink2:

also, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Long Beach Poly a magnet school and able to recruit to a degree

Colerain wasn't close to being the best in Ohio last year either. They only made it to the round of 16 in the D-I playoffs.

I wasn't trying to imply that they were

I'm surprised Glenville has not been involved in the 'challenge' yet... some years are better than others, but every year talented players transfer in. In successive years the school produced TS, Whitner, Ginn, O'Neal/Lenix :sad2:, Rose/Small.
