Game Thread: Miami, Fla 27, Virginia Tech 7 (Final)

Thank goodness that Miami lost that ugly season opener in Tallahasee.

And I'm calling bullshit on Bob Davie. He was saying how it's so tough for Miami-FSU to play each other so early in the season. Well, they had the conference move the scheduling of that game to the start of the season so they could recover from a loss, since pollsters penalize teams more for losing later in the season.

Hence, Miami is the top 1-loss team in the polls since they lost in early September.

Good point, the loser of that game is conceivably (theoretically now if it is their only loss) able to be in the top 5 if the game is played first...but out of the top 10 if the game is played last.

Here is what bugs me about the ACC teams this year.

FSU: beat Miami, struggled with UNC, Wake and BC, lost to NCSU

VT: beat BC, played first decent opponent on November 5th and were promptly bitch slapped.

Miami: lost to FSU, beat VT who has played no one.

See the circle jerk here? They are living off of preseason rankings and the Miami/FSU game back in September but all 3 were BCS top 10 before tonight because of this bullshit.

The toughest team in the ACC that all 3 get credit for beating was BC who lost to UNC today.

The Bama thing worries me. They are not good, but 1 loss in the SEC is tough to beat.

I think thats a stretch; I love the style of Bama Ball this year. They're offense is hurt by the lack of Prethro, but with time i think they can recover a bit more, not get back to the level it was at, but it should make less pathetic showings, as they get used to his lack of presence.

Also in regards to defense. I like ohio state, penn state, miami, Bama all the same.

This loss by VT hurts our chances to get an at large BCS bid if we don't win the big ten (assuming that we beat NW & scUM)

Although not sure if VT would be selected ahead of us, if we are BCS eligible?

Thoughts....
I had the same thought process during the game, which kept me from enjoying Vick playing like total crap.

Just got to let it all play out. Hopefully this loss shows the pollsters that VTech was majorly overrated.

We'd get an at large before VT...unless they are in the top 6. It will be interesting to see what happens with the BCS. The computers love us. We were already 10th, and with FSU and UCLA losing, we likely will move to 8th...and VT might be around 7th. It could be close to see who is higher. If VT gets in the top 6...then they get the BCS bid. If they are out of the top 6, then we'd get it over them, just on team appeal. Who knows, we might end up being ranked higher than VT in the BCS. You can never tell with that thing. It has us ranked ahead of Georgia. It looks like Miami will play Florida State for the ACC title game.

Right now it looks like:

Pac 10: #1 USC
Big 12: #2 Texas
SEC: #3 Alabama
ACC: #4 Miami
Big 10: #5 Penn State
Big East: #17 West Virginia
That leaves two spots left:
The first one right now would HAVE to go to LSU, who would be ranked #6....and the other one could go to...Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, or Virgina Tech.
I'd think Notre Dame would get choosen over us.

BUT!!! LSU plays Alabama this weekend. Which will knock one of those teams out of the Top 6 (unless of course Alabama loses and stays ranked high...this could be close...we actually should probably cheer for Alabama here, just so we jump over LSU in the BCS) and I think the winner of that game is likely to win the conference and get the automatic bid...and then #6 would likely be Virginia Tech...with us at #7.

So in other words...if we win out...and there are no upsets. We still end up #7, and a #11 Notre Dame would likely get picked first...

But if Miami, FL loses to FSU again in the ACC championship, we'd jump over Miami into the #6 spot...meaning we automatically have to go.

So...if the winner of the LSU/Alabama game next weekend loses the SEC championship (unless this would cause Georiga to jump over us, this could be close), or FSU wins the ACC, or the BCS ranks us ahead of Virginia Tech...then we would likely finish in the top 6, and get a BCS bowl no matter what. So...really, even if Penn State wins their game against MSU, there are still quite a lot of things, only one of which need to happen, that could get us into the BCS AUTOMATICALLY, without having to worry about whether they select us or not. This would be great, because then Notre Dame would be the other at large...and there would be a chance of a ND vs OSU matchup.

But then again, you never know with the BCS...teams jump over teams in this thing every week for no particular reason.

I just think that if we keep playing the way we are...that we are going to win these next two games...and I don't see us being 9-2 and left out of the BCS. We are the best 2 loss team in the country. HANDS DOWN!

according to the announcers today on ESPN, we are the best team in teh country. wow, i have never heard anyone from ESPN give us so much love(not that its a bad thing) the two losses are really upsetting because i think hands down we could beat any team in the country right now. USC might give us the most trouble but with the way our wideouts are playing, we would torch the secondary. unfortuanatly, we will never know....

Top 6 only gets an automatic bid for non-BCS conference teams (C-USA, Mac, ND, etc.)
