On closer look, Bielema impressed by Buckeyes
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS - Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema is not part of that chorus of voices who continually have questioned Ohio State's No. 1 ranking, and tried to chip away at that status.
There are likely two very good reasons for this:
1. Bielema has to play the same folks the Buckeyes play, so bad-mouthing the Ohio State schedule is tantamount to trashing his own list of opponents; and,
2. He has to play the Buckeyes today.
Wisconsin was one of the teams picked ahead of Ohio State in the majority of the preseason national polls, and in the projected Big Ten Conference rankings. But the Badgers come to Ohio Stadium two games down in the Big Ten race, and a significant underdog to the unbeaten Buckeyes.

Arizona State tops in possession

When Wisconsin visits No. 1 Ohio State today the Badgers may be without top rusher P.J. Hill. The sophomore running back has rushed for 1,066 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, and has the ability to dominate games, but he injured his foot last Saturday in the Badgers' 33-3 victory over Indiana. Without Hill, things grow problematic for Wisconsin's running game.

In seven of their nine games, the Buckeyes have given up more yards on their opponents' first drive than what the opponent averaged per drive the rest of the game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
After linebacker Marcus Freeman got lit up, he was lights out.
On its first possession last Saturday, Penn State had Ohio State on its heels, driving 76 yards to the 2-yard line. From there, Freeman was blasted by fullback Dan Lawlor, allowing Rodney Kinlaw to step untouched into the end zone.
"I guess the low man wins," Freeman said ruefully. "(Lawlor) was definitely lower than me, and he gave me a good shot."
That gave Penn State a 7-3 lead, the first time in five games that top-ranked Ohio State (9-0, 5-0) had trailed.

OSU gears for bolder Badgers defense

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
At first glance, it appears the Wisconsin defense has made a U-turn the past two weeks, reversing course on a one-way street to mediocrity.
But does shutting down Northern Illinois, which hasn't been very offensive, and then taking advantage of a nervous, four-turnover Indiana offense constitute a U-turn?
It does to Ohio State's coaches, who were looking for ways to stoke the Buckeyes as they prepared to play host to the Badgers today.
"They are a high-pressure team that plays a lot of man coverage and loads up the box," coach Jim Tressel said. "I haven't really dissected how many of their total points have been a net result of their defense and how many have been attributed otherwise."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
As the movie Rudy heads toward its climax, Notre Dame coach Dan Devine tells his players during a pregame spiel, "Nobody, I mean nobody, comes into our house and pushes us around."
Whether coach Jim Tressel will say that to Ohio State today before a game against Wisconsin remains to be seen, but he often tries to make the point. OSU has signs in the locker rooms at their practice facility and in Ohio Stadium telling players to protect their house.
"There hasn't been a great team at Ohio State that wasn't great at home," Tressel said. "Ohio Stadium has got to be a place where we play great, a place where we execute."

The Outland Trophy
Ron Dayne is the most recognizable face in the recent history of the University of Wisconsin football program. The bruising running back won the Heisman Trophy in 1999 after racking up 2,034 yards and 20 touchdowns.
At Ohio State, where hero worship is an art form, exalted status is reserved for those players who need only one name on their identification cards -- Archie, Eddie, Troy.
But would these onetime big men on campus and other offensive stars loom so large were it not for the labors of the really big men in Madison and Columbus? No chance.
Wisconsin and Ohio State each has a long, proud tradition of churning out high-caliber offensive linemen who have paved the way for their teams' success. That has been especially true since 1981, the year the Badgers snapped a 22-year losing streak against OSU to start a competitive run in the series.

Badgers try to sustain success at Horseshoe

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No dancing on the O.
After Wisconsin beat Ohio State 24-13 three years ago, a Badgers linebacker danced on the big Block O that straddles the 50-yard line at Ohio Stadium, touching off a bunch of pushing, taunting and shoving between the teams. Buckeyes fans were aghast. Ohio State has not forgotten. Neither, apparently, has Wisconsin.
We had a little postgame situation because Dontez (Sanders) felt the need to dance around on the O," said Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema, who was the Badgers' defensive coordinator in '03. "We obviously discourage that behavior. Tez called me this (week) and he wanted, I think, 32 tickets. He's now a high school coach in Ohio. So we'll keep Tez away from our guys."

Players change, winning constant
OSU a win away from Big Ten mark

Columbus -- Ohio State can break the Big Ten record by winning its 20th consecutive conference game with a victory over Wisconsin today. But Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz thought he had the Buckeyes where he wanted them back when the streak was only at seven.
"I thought maybe we'd catch a break going into the 2006 season," Ferentz said. "They'd graduated just about their whole defense and about half were drafted in the first two rounds. So we felt like there really would be a drop-off defensively."
By the time the Buckeyes reached Iowa City in the fifth game of that season, Ferentz realized he was wrong, and Ohio State's 31-6 victory proved it. On they've marched, tying the record of 19 straight wins set by the Elvis Grbac-Desmond Howard Michigan teams from 1990 to 1992. And the rest of the conference has stopped waiting for a drop-off.

Badgered at home: Buckeyes remember

COLUMBUS No team has felt as comfortable facing Ohio State as Wisconsin. The Badgers have knocked around the Buckeyes and knocked down their head coach.
Literally.
During a postgame celebration some Ohio State players still are unable to forget, Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel hit the canvas during Wisconsin?s 2004 postgame dance on Ohio Stadium?s block ?O.? The Buckeyes will try to defend their No. 1 ranking today at noon against No. 19 Wisconsin.
?If you were at the game, you still remember it,? OSU linebacker Marcus Freeman said. ?I remember seeing (Tressel get knocked down) on TV. I wasn?t too happy about it.?
A loss today and Ohio State can forget about the national title dance. One loss, the one most of the country seems to be waiting on, will send the Buckeyes tumbling in the polls.

OSU is big favorite to subdue Wisconsin
By MATT GUTRIDGE
Special to the Times Recorder
Wisconsin has won the last two games against Ohio State and four out of the last six. However, the top-ranked Buckeyes are favored by 15.5-points over the 21st ranked Badgers. Wisconsin is a heavy underdog because P.J. Hill has a bruised left foot and his backup, Lance Smith, is suspended from playing away games. That leaves freshman Zach Brown to carry most of the load if Hill can't perform.
