If Smith sharp, BG in trouble

COLUMBUS Two weeks ago, they laid new grass sod on the field at Ohio Stadium. Bowling Green?s job today is not to get buried beneath the grass and tons of sand poured on the field.
Top-ranked Ohio State takes a break from its Big Ten schedule today, hosting mega-underdog Bowling Green.
The Buckeyes are a five-touchdown favorite against a BG team that has never played against the country?s No. 1 team.
The task in the OSU locker room is to come out without a letdown. The Buckeyes are coming off a 38-17 win over then-No. 13 Iowa in an electric atmosphere.
The last time OSU won a night game on the road against a ranked opponent was the second week of the season over Texas. A week after the Texas win, the Buckeyes sputtered on offense against Cincinnati. They won that game 37-7 after leading just 13-7 at halftime. By the end of the afternoon, OSU had 444 total yards.
So the challenge today is to have quarterback Troy Smith at the top of his game the moment he steps out of the locker room for what could be a chance to Smith to pad his Heisman Trophy numbers. Or it could be a day when he doesn?t pull away from the pack.
Smith seems to be finding a groove. He is running less, but maintaining the kind of pass efficiency that led the country a year ago.
?One play during the Iowa game he came off the field, and I said, ?Troy, the post might have been open.? He said, ?No, coach, you?ll see on film, it wasn?t.? And he was right,? Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel said. ?He?s very aware of where people are and very careful.?
The Buckeyes are plus-9 in the turnover margin, averaging less than two giveaways a game. Conversely, OSU has turned opponents? turnovers into 55 points.
Bowling Green Head Coach Gregg Brandon is convinced Smith is the real deal.
If anyone else isn?t, listen to Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz. Smith had another highlight moment on a touchdown pass he threw to Brian Robiskie against the Hawkeyes. A small window to throw the ball opened and closed quickly. Smith got the ball through.
?I?m not an expert on the national scene,? Ferentz said. ?But I can?t believe there are many players in the country who are better than Troy Smith. This is a guy who can beat you in a lot of ways. He?s what makes those guys tick.?
Admittedly, it might be hard to tick today. Senior offensive guard T.J. Downing told reporters earlier this week it could be difficult to get up for a 3-2 Mid-American Conference team.
?It?s human nature when you look at a team on paper, and say we?re bigger, and obviously better with the rankings,? Downing said. ?You can?t get comfortable. ... It?s going to be hard to get up, but you?ve just got to do it. You have no choice. It?s your job.?
Against 15 true freshmen? Against a team that gave up 40 points to Buffalo, which is 93rd in total offense in the country? The Falcons let Kent State put up 38 points in a rout.
It?s no wonder Tressel is talking up Bowling Green to his players. The Buckeyes had an unusually long practice Tuesday. Tressel mentioned the Buckeyes have played three games against BGSU and won two of those 24-17 and 17-6. He conveniently left out a 44-13 win in 1997.
?They have a great threat with both of the quarterbacks (Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes) they have,? Tressel said. ?They throw a lot of movement at you, and they run the spread so they make you accountable for everything you do on defense.?
The Falcons do have the country?s 12th-best rushing offense at 208 yards a game. Of course, they?re running against a Buckeye defense allowing less than 10 points a game, and a team that has beaten three ranked opponents by an average of 20 points.
?It?s going to be a really big challenge for our football team,? Brandon said. ?Not so much playing Ohio State, which is big in itself, but just the youth of our football team. ... Getting them prepared to play in this venue is a huge challenge.?
