Bob Hunter commentary: Midseason matchup has no redeeming value

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel called it a "delay" in the Big Ten schedule, a sweet little euphemism if ever there was one. Most of us would call it a waste of time.
Kent State got $650,000 for the privilege of getting hammered 48-3 by Ohio State in the middle of the season. It's not easy to figure out what anyone else got out of yesterday's game in Ohio Stadium, including the Kent State players. They got a chance to play in a beautiful old stadium in front of more than 100,000 people, but as warm, fuzzy memories go, that seems a little thin. It's like having Judge Judy scold, berate and humiliate you on TV, all so you can get a little exposure and the cash to pay the judgment against you. It's kind of pathetic, really.

OHIO STATE 48, KENT STATE 3
Buckeyes show flashes of greatness

Hartline sets school record with 90-yard punt return; cornerback Washington adds interception return.

COLUMBUS ? Kent State coach Doug Martin talked during the week of rotating his first and second strings against Ohio State to reduce the wear and tear on his players.
But Martin could have inserted both units at once and the Golden Flashes probably still would have been left in tatters.
Todd Boeckman threw two touchdown passes, Brian Hartline set a school record with a 90-yard punt return and the Buckeyes racked up a 35-0 halftime lead on the way to a 48-3 victory before 105,051 satisfied customers Saturday.

Buckeyes (yawn) defeat Flashes in non-conference laugher

By JON SPENCER

COLUMBUS Contrary to rumor, LeBron James wasn?t spotted in Ohio Stadium wearing a Kent State lid. He is brazen about his allegiances, not stupid. No one in his or her right mind is claiming to be a Kent fan today, except maybe the Big Ten Network, which ended up with plenty of footage of the Flashes if it decides to fill time set aside for the ?Battle of the Mascots? with a bloopers show instead.

Ohio State?s 48-3 rout Saturday made that 2002 debacle against its blue and gold (mostly blue) step-brother ? remember 51-17? ? look like a squeaker.

?We came out and dominated in all aspects of the game,? sophomore cornerback Donald Washington said. ?When we do that, we?re tough to beat.?

One week after the OSU defense dropped six passes at Purdue, Washington not only speared the pigskin with both mitts but returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-0 in the second quarter.

KSU runs ball well against OSU
By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? In a non-conference game plopped in the middle of the stretch run, about the worst thing that could happen to either team is to pick up a key injury. In No. 3 Ohio State?s 48-3 victory over Kent State on Saturday, there were no severe injuries although two of the Buckeyes? top defensive players did skip the second half after getting shaken up.

Safety Anderson Russell was helped off the field after twisting an ankle early in the second quarter but coach Jim Tressel said later that Russell was held out the rest of the game more as a precaution.
?Anderson kind of rolled the same ankle that he?s been nursing,? Tressel said. Some Buckeyes fans might have gone into cardiac arrest when they saw All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis confined to the sideline after being hurt.?It?s nothing serious,? he said. ?I just got kicked in the hip. I?ll be ready for practice on Tuesday.?

OK, I haven't rewatched the game but I definitly saw KSU running it right at us with a zone blocking scheme and a small/shifty and good running back. They were moving it and ran for 100+ in the first half.

Javon Ringer is up next and he just went for 200+ vs IU. I know it was IU but there is no doubt MSU can run the ball. The question mark for them is defense.

All in all I don't know if it was just getting used to a straight ahead run attack after all the spread we've seen combined with a little sleep walking OR if we are vastly overrated and succeptible to the first team that can punch us in the mouth and run it right at us.

MSU is going to tell us A LOT.

Completely agree. I was just amazed at how well KSU was running against us. I really dont want to find against MSU that our run D isnt as good as it has looked so far.

There were a lot of missed tackles today. Kent State would have had about half of the rushing yards if Ohio State had wrapped up and tackled the way they did against Purdon't or anyone else this year.

Agreed. Being unable to wrap guys up yesterday was a problem during the entire game (including our starting defense).

I'm sure JT will be focusing on tackling in practice this week.

Brian Hartline outruns Kent State defenders on a school-record 90-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Ohio State's defense limited Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman to minus-7 yards on eight carries.

After polishing off Kent State 48-3 yesterday, Ohio State players sang their traditional Carmen Ohio.
Eight hours later, that tune might have changed to When the Saints Go Marching In.
Thanks to another day of big upsets, the Buckeyes (7-0) likely will be heading to New Orleans, site of the Bowl Championship Series title game, if they can win their remaining five games.
The two teams ranked ahead of Ohio State lost, which means OSU is expected to be atop both the polls and the initial BCS standings, to be released this afternoon.
Top-ranked Louisiana State lost in triple overtime to Kentucky, and second-ranked California was knocked off by Oregon State. That makes it eight top-five teams to be upset this season.
Ohio State could get a chance to redeem its loss to Florida in last season's championship game.
"We didn't expect to be ranked this high at this point in the year," said Buckeyes receiver Brian Hartline, who scored OSU's first two TDs, one on a school-record 90-yard punt return. "We are growing so fast, and it's fun to see us improve."

OSU overwhelms Kent State
Defense dominates

COLUMBUS - There would be no giant killing here. No Stanford over USC, no Appalachian State over Michigan, no Truman defeats Dewey.

No. 3 Ohio State showed it was immune to the virulent upset virus that has infected college football this season and dominated Kent State 48-3 yesterday. Only a self-imposed mercy rule prevented the Buckeyes (7-0) from making it much, much worse.

The Ohio State starting offensive unit did not play a single snap in the second half after the Buckeyes had crafted a 35-0 halftime advantage with a scoring variety pack - touchdowns via rushing, passing, and on a punt return and an interception return. The edge was still there, despite the fact Ohio State stepped out of Big Ten play in the midst of the conference race.

Yahoo - Boost for the Buckeyes

"We didn't expect to be ranked this high at this point in the year," Ohio State receiver Brian Hartline told the Columbus Dispatch. "We are growing so fast, it's fun to see us improve." And fun to watch other contenders trip all over themselves.
Because nothing comes easy, or makes much sense so far this season, it would be foolish to crown anyone with anything other than one of those cardboard Burger King lids just yet. But let the BCS B.S. begin, and expect Ohio State to lead the standings when they come out Sunday.
The reality: OSU still has a lot of interference to run through to make a return trip to the title game, this time in New Orleans.

Apparently Dan Wetzel hasn't heard that last part before.

OHIO STATE 48, KENT STATE 3
Ohio State Buckeyes crush Kent State Golden Flashes

Sunday, October 14, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Attempting to keep his balance down the left sideline while checking his exuberance over his first career interception, Ohio State cornerback Donald Washington salted away a win that was never in doubt. His 70-yard return for a touchdown in the second quarter Saturday was just another piece of Ohio State's 48-3, nonconference dismantling of Kent State at Ohio Stadium.
It also added another seven points to the secret scoreboard for the stingiest defense in the country.
The No. 3 Buckeyes (7-0) have surrendered 46 points this season, a nation's-best average of 6.7 per game. But two of those points were a safety allowed by the OSU offense against Akron, another seven a special teams letdown on a kickoff return by Northwestern. Then toss out the touchdowns scored against the OSU second-teamers by Washington and Purdue and the field goal by the Golden Flashes against backups in the last three minutes Saturday.

Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Bill Livingston analyzes the Ohio State Buckeyes' big punt return

Sunday, October 14, 2007 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist
Columbus
- If the punt is the most im portant play in football, the punt return is the most spectacular one.
To return a punt for a touchdown, a player needs courage just to field a descending ball in bright sun or tricky wind. At the same time, opposing players race toward him at speeds that mount with each step and make the pass rush on a quarterback seem tame. He needs good hands, better reflexes to make the first tackler miss and the kind of speed that makes the pur suit wonder what's the use.
