Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 38, Youngstown St. 6 (final)

the only rotation that i expect to hurt us will be at qb. show and boeckman will likely both play a half. everyone else with exception of some of the backup receivers have game experience so i don't expect a significant learning curve.

im far more interested in ysu. if there are any fans lurking or any of us that are in the know on their program. what are they good at? what are they bad at? any expectations on game play?

I would be surprised if Tressel takes the starting quarterback out at halftime, unless the score is already pretty lop-sided. 4 touchdowns or more. Of course, that very well may be the case, and I'd love to see both of them play that much.

I think that Tressel would also love to see both of his quarterbacks in the game. Obviously, a quarterback can make all the right decisions on the practice field, but game-time may be a very different story. Getting both of those guys (maybe even Henton, as well) will give him a chance to make a decision for later in the year, as far as which guy is the guy.

But I think that his starting QB will play the majority of the game. I'd guess 2/3 of the game is Boeckman, and 1/3 is Schoenhoft. MAYBE Henton gets in the game in the final minutes to run the clock out.

If we're up by 17+ points at halftime and our defense is dominating I think JT will start Schoenhoft for the second half, or at least put him in for the second possession of the second half. First game of the year, against a I-AA team, should be the perfect recipe for getting your top two QBs a lot of time. Henton is also virtually assured of a series or two if we're up by a lot in the fourth quarter.

2006 YSU Stats:

http://www.ysu.edu/sports/football/2006/stats/teamstat.htm

Stats that I found interesting:

Points per game: YSU 31.4 - Opp 23.1
Rushing Yards per Game: YSU 223.7 - Opp 169.9
Passing Yards per Game: YSU 157.9 - Opp 190.6

Neither of their two leading running backs (Marcus Mason - 153.9 ypg, and Monquantae Gibson - 45.0 ypg) are listed on their roster. I'm guessing they were seniors last year.

The next leading rusher was Tom Zetts (23.9ypg), their starting quarterback from last year (149.0 passing ypg).

Edit - Marcus Mason is now in the NFL:

I watched their playoff games last year, and although they showed alot of heart, they did not have the team speed, especially on defense, to hang with Appalachian St. They gave up too many big plays and long drives.
They are a well-coached team with plenty of spunk who will be totally outmatched physically along the lines as well as in the speed positions.

Beanie will get off to a great start - let's just put it that way.

I'm happy for YSU to get the payday and hope they have a great season after Sept 1st.

Precisely why I think we jump on them early and big and then cruise in the second half.
