Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

nice opener for the Buckeyes... yeah, things got a little sloppy after the first play of the second quarter, and they definitely have some stuff to work on, but when the game was in doubt (was it ever, really? ) they played like gangbusters... i think this gives me a little more confidence going into Texas next week... i'd much rather face a quality opponent in the opener than a complete walkover like North Texas... seriously, UT could have gotten better experience playing themselves...

Saftey positions should be up for grabs [not so much Mitchells]

LB's might be shaken up a bit. Homan and Grant played very very well.

The defense as a whole needs to learn how to play stretch runs and screen passes.

Troy underthrew almost every bomb he threw.

Those are my "big" negatives. Buckeyes played great and should hush quite a bit of doubters out there.

Well, good game you guys. Too bad we couldn't make it more of a challenge for ya. I'm sure Texas will get a lot more pressure on Troy than we did, though he's mobile enough that maybe it doesn't matter too much. Quite an offense you got there, and the defense is probably good enough too. Hard to tell because Wolfe is the only guy that did anything for us today, so I guess you'll have to find out next week against Texas.

Tressel's a class act, he's definitely a guy that doesn't try to run up the score.

Very good (not great) opener for our boys. I was almost spent 5 seconds into the second quarter. Run D worries me a little going into Texas, as does the kicking game. Hopefully JT and Heacock can iron out those bumps this week. I think the front four did a nice job putting pressure on the QB, we'll see how they do against that Texas OL. I was really impressed with some of the "newb" defenders...Homan, Grant, Coleman, etc.

1 down, 12 to go.... All in all I am impressed, our offense is SICK and the D shows a lot of promise. Not used to the missed FG's, but one was from way downtown, so not that big of a deal.

That was well worth the eight month wait for me...seems like there may be a lot of fireworks this year! It's now 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning here in Korea, so time for some sleep. God bless everyone of your Scarlet & Gray hearts and bring on Texas!!!

For the NIU fans, you guys showed a lot of heart and Garrett Wolfe is indeed the real deal. Best of luck the rst of the way.

:oh:

Did anyone else get the impression we didn't see the full offense? No QB runs designed or otherwise, vanilla runs by Pittman and nothing special for Ginn. Looking forward to UT next week.

Wolfe was very impressive, both running and catching the ball, all the more impressive since he was getting almost no help.

LB did look pretty good, I think Kerr was nerves compared to the others.

Troy looked good. he had some rusty spots, but overall the offense looked really good. chris wells is gonna be really good for tOSU.

Anyone impressed with Laurinatis? I am not... He does not make disruptive plays, and he does not get in position to make impact plays... All he did today was make tackles 8-10 yards downfield...

Kerr did even less...

And Brandon Mitchell still can not tackle in space...he was constantly taking poor angles and when he does get in position he doesnt make sure handed tackles...

I do not think we have a safety on the team who can bring a presence to the rush defense... and this will kill the team all year...in my opinion...

On a positive note... Homan and Grant have potential to be impact LBs with more seasonsing... they have the instincts that I dont see from the other LBs...
