Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Game

Did anyone else get the impression we didn't see the full offense? No QB runs designed or otherwise, vanilla runs by Pittman and nothing special for Ginn. Looking forward to UT next week.

Wolfe was very impressive, both running and catching the ball, all the more impressive since he was getting almost no help.

You nailed it all :oh:

Everyone glad we're not Colorado fans today? Holy crap, talk about laying an egg.

Sorry to see the sloppiness in the 2nd half, but I think they'll get past that. Texas will definitely be having their hands full with out offense and return games...little worried about the kicker and the run D though.

I don't know if it was Garrett Wolfe, but I'm really missing the lateral speed from last years linebackers. We were strong up the middle, but any short screen pass or a run off tackle seemed to result in good yards for NIU.

The game's tempo was lost at halftime. I don't think we saw anything special on offense; nothing fancy. Smith isn't a scrambler and he always had plenty of time, he didn't need to use his legs much this game.

Chris Wells looked good except for his fumble. Our two redzone fumbles were by a true freshman and a backup QB. Sure, it's two fumbles in the redzone, but I couldn't think of two people I'd rather have be responsible for them.

Troy Smith and Ginn lived up to their hype.

Damn, we completly stomed them in the 1st Quarter. Tressle Should have let Smith go all out longer then he did, If Tressle continiues to do that Smith will have a hard time grabing that heisman, because I can guarentee Weis will Run up Quinns stats.
I was off my seat the entire 1st half though.

Very good (not great) opener for our boys. I was almost spent 5 seconds into the second quarter. Run D worries me a little going into Texas, as does the kicking game. Hopefully JT and Heacock can iron out those bumps this week. I think the front four did a nice job putting pressure on the QB, we'll see how they do against that Texas OL. I was really impressed with some of the "newb" defenders...Homan, Grant, Coleman, etc.

1 down, 12 to go.... All in all I am impressed, our offense is SICK and the D shows a lot of promise. Not used to the missed FG's, but one was from way downtown, so not that big of a deal.

That was well worth the eight month wait for me...seems like there may be a lot of fireworks this year! It's now 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning here in Korea, so time for some sleep. God bless everyone of your Scarlet & Gray hearts and bring on Texas!!!

For the NIU fans, you guys showed a lot of heart and Garrett Wolfe is indeed the real deal. Best of luck the rst of the way.

:oh:

You too, good luck against Texas. Looks like you guys have a heck of a season in front of you. Enjoy it. Most teams would kill to have the potential you guys have. To me, Garrett Wolfe is worth the price of admission, the rest of the team needs some work but we'll get there. Your defense was a big part of that. Anyway, get some good Zs in Korea.

There was nothing "shown" to Texas in this game. All base stuff. Even TG's long TD... simple route Texas would know OSU has in the arsenal. Simply put, we showed UT nothing today, and still walked away with a dominating win.

If OSU can put the same kind of intenstity they showed v. NIU in the 1Q, McCoy is in trouble. (OSU may well need to do it for 4 Q, of course)

On Grant, besides the INT, I disagree...I thought Laurinaitis played much better

I dont think you should be able to just toss out the INT. Although, I do agree with you I think Laurinaitis played well enough to hold onto his job and I dont expect him to lose his job. Kerr however is another story. I was just mentioning who I think played well off the bench at LB.

As a Mike...yup

As I said above, I agree.

Have a good eseason bro...you'll win a lot of games if they clean up the quality of play a little bit. I still see this team as the MAC favorite after watching at least some of most of the other MAC teams.

Wolf proved to be a very good back, and the ONLY thing worth a damn in NIU's O, if you ask me. He's a humble guy, and a quality kid, I wish him the best.

Mili was right, though.... they fed him the ball all game long (as they should have, considering) even in the face of a huge deficit

Yeah. They were long boots, but... well.. I'm used to them being automatic, I guess.

And about our kicker, I think him missing those two long FGs was good for next week's Texas game. Last year, we relied too much on the foot of Huston. Now we know, while Pettrey may mature throughout the season, we can't rely on him to put up points against Texas.
