Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Not to go too far off topic, but regarding Wolfe, I think it's not too farfetched to say that he will rush for over 100 yards.

I can totally see the NIU offense having a solid first drive, and be shut down for the rest of the game. I'll say that Wolfe gets 60 yards in the first half (with the majority of those yards coming from a big run on the first drive).

Then, I think tOSU will get a comfortable lead, and bring in the backups to get some quality PT. Then, I can see NIU leaving Wolfe in, to further better his stats, to make a case for him, as the best RB in the league (eg. "Oh, he got 125 yards against tOSU).

However, I see this game decided by at least two scores.

First game.... see: Alamo Bowl

The first game ought to turn out like the 2005 Alamo Bowl. A running team, with a star back (Morency), and the OSU defense turned them into the Detroit Lions!!! as in, desperately trying to find something on offense that would work.

Wolfe will have a couple of nice runs (10-20 yards) but there will also be handoffs in the backfield with Pitcock already wrapped around his hips... Wilson runs him down on a pitch... Marcus Freeman drops him for a 6-yard loss... So, he will net out about 86 yards. (So says my crystal ball).

With all the new defensive players, I see us giving up a couple of scores, and a final of 34-13 or something like that.

Damn! I can hardly wait for the start of the season!

Before any NIU fans or Mili haters jumps in to make this point, nothing Mili said here is incorrect. When I see 148 yards on 17 carries, I'm lead to believe he had a productive day and was running over, under, and around mich.

When you point out that he was held pretty much in check save for one play, it paints a more clear/less misleading picture.
4.5 yards per pop, while not setting the world on fire, is not 'held pretty much in check' either. that kind of production gets you in 3rd and 1 every series, and every coach in America likes those numbers...

even without the 76 yarder, the kid had a damn good game against TSUN, and i'll give him credit for it...

Do real-life coaches really care about stats like this? I'm not talking about a case where a player needs 5 more yards to break a record. I say, sure.. leave him in there for 5 more yards. But I don't think I believe that a coach would say, "GAH!! My player ended with 98 rushing yards. I wanted him to get 100 so fans of my team could talk some smack, despite my team losing by 17 points."
