Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

This morning Colin Cowherd, on ESPN radio, picked his six college football upsets for the coming season. The first one on the list was NIU over OSU. Of course, this is against the spread, not straight up, but he thinks NIU will stay close into the 4th quarter.

G-FORCE...I haven't said much about this game, but as far as Britt Davis being your number one receiver after having been playing QB 2 weeks until the season...I wouldn't consider that a good thing if I were you. That doesn't say much about your WR depth and that would be like us saying, Troy Smith...now better than Ginn and Gonzo. YIKES!

The only way NIU beats the spread is if we're favored by 24- points...

Our #3 and #4 WR (Marcus Perez and Matt Simon) missed all of last year, so yes we didn't have alot of depth. Britt Davis is a freak of nature athlete wise, and he was able to step right in and do a great job. He'll be our #1 this year, and with an entire year of palying and practicing under his belt he will be even better.

He set freshman records, so no matter what he used to be he can play.

Btw, Simon and Perez are back this year.

G-Force, stop quoting CST--we go by EST here. . I am actually very annoyed by the 3:30 start time b/c it will keep me from going, whereas if it were at noon I would have been able to go. FWIW, if I were in charge, I'd make all our non-conference home games (with the exception of very big games such as UT) start at noon and all of our conference home games start at 3:30. I don't like going to non-conference games at 3:30 or conference games at noon.

Bruce Feldman's Top offensive difference-makers:

7. Garrett Wolfe, Northern Illinois, RB: Pound-for-pound the best player in college football. The 5-foot-7, 175-pounder rushed for almost 1,600 yards, despite missing three games last season. And don't say, "Well, he's just a mid-major guy feasting on inferior defenses." Wolfe did all he could last season keeping NIU in the game against both Michigan and Northwestern (both road games) by rushing for 393 yards and averaging almost 8 yards per rush. Keep an eye on him when NIU visits Ohio State early this season.

Mel Kiper's top five seniors by postion:

Offensive Tackles
1. Joe Thomas, Wisconsin
2. Levi Brown, Penn State
3. Ryan Harris, Notre Dame
4. Doug Free, N. Illinois
5. Arron Sears, Tennessee

Wolfe is ranked 6th amongst RBs by Lindy's.

Free is ranked 8th amongst OTs by Lindy's.

I like the idea of having a good test to tune up for the Texas game.

BTW:

The same publications lists OSU at:
  • #8 nationally on the Defensive Line (#1 Big Ten)
  • #3 in the Big 10 at Linebacker, despite the losses
  • #2 in the Big 10 in the Defensive Backfield
So yeah, good test; and certainly some plays will be made by your stars.

But with Tressel/Heacock holding the reins, it's a team game.

FWIW:
  • OSU #1 Offensive Backfield in the Nation (#2 QB)
  • OSU #5 Receivers in the Nation
  • OSU #8 Offensive Line in the Nation
So: The number 2 QB with the number 5 receivers against a defensive backfield that was, according to Lindy's, burned by the faster receivers they faced last year. Lindy's used Akron as an example.

Yeah, Akron's receivers were a lot faster than most people realize last year. But this match-up doesn't really look close.

It is, as has been pointed out ad nauseum, the first game of the year. We can expect it to be close for longer than it might otherwise be. Then again, if we get a big lead (very possible), your best weapon is of limited utility.

I hope Lindy's is right; but you never know. Still 11 and 1/2 weeks to wait.
