Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

I don't care if Pitt tripped over his shoelaces and fell in from 1 inch out, scoring the game winning touchdown in the biggest rivalry game in sports in their house is C-L-U-T-C-H. Period.
To be fair, he was refuting my claim that Pitt rushed down the field. I was going off a previous post that I misread, as Pitt only accounted for 5 yards on the final drive.

Oh... I'm far too lazy to find that now... :wink2:
Here ya go.

For the game:
Stay respectable. Don't do what our MAC breathern Miami did last year and get dominated start to finish. Would love to see Wolfe have a very good day. As long as we keep it respectable and have everyone come out healthy, I am fine. A win, and I would poop.

As for the season, the expectations are MAC Title. No reason why shouldn't win it this year. There is not a better MAC team for Ohio State to be facing then us. We should be the class of the conference this year. Anything less then a trip to the MAC Title game and a bowl is a dissapointment. I think we will be a good test for you guys.

A few players you should look out for:

Wolfe, RB

Davis, WR

Brown, LB

Utch, S

We also have a 1st round OL prospect in the name of Doug "Freak" Free.

We have a QB controversy this year. Phil Horvath (senior) was really good for us when he started. He was Top 5 in completions and QB rating when healthy. Why is there a controversy then? Well Horvath was only 5-4 as a starter, and a kid named Dan Nicholson stepped in for him. Nicholson, as a freshman, led us to our 3 toughest biggest wins of the year (@ Central Michigan, @ Toledo which was the 1st time we beat them since like 1990 and the 1st time we one win in Toledo since the 70s, and then finally the clincher vs. WMU), He threw for over 300 yards against Central Michigan, and started out 10/10 against Toledo in his 1st career start. He led us to our 1st MAC Championship Game apperance EVER, struggled alittle in that one, but he still was amazing.

The 2 QBs are almost polar opposites. Horvath doesn't have a big arm and is more of a short passes, high completion precentage type of guy. Nicholson has the sexy arm, and likes to air out. Horvath is a senior, Nicholson a sophmore. I am more then comfortable with either guys starting, but I think Nicholson has a leg up because our recievers are fast and can stretch the field. I would like to see Phil start.

Btw I posted a picture so you can actually see our players before you play them.
Hope that helps.

As for the defense, it was very young and inconsistent last year. It had it's flashes, but stuggled mightily and times also. I don't expect it to be much better in game 1.

Wolfe isn't clutch? Our last three games of the year (all-must wins mind you) he had 107 carries for 724 yards (6.8 YPC), and 9 touchdwons. That was in 3 games! He averaged 241 yards in our biggest games of the year.
...
If Pittman is such a "clutch" back where was he in the Michigan game?

Uh, you're really not getting my point. These may have been important games in winning the MAC, but these weren't your biggest three games of the year. They were games against weak opponents, only one barely into the top 50 in the Sagarin ratings and one outside the top 100 in the 110 Div 1A teams!

Rank Team Power rating W L SOS SOS rank
49 Toledo A = 73.57 9 3 62.39( 111)
72 Central Michigan A = 68.97 6 5 69.01( 75)
105 Eastern Michigan A = 61.50 4 7 65.08( 92)

I think I made my point. When you needed Wolfe to perform against tough teams outside the MAC, he didn't. Pittman did.

WOW.

25 pages and the resident NIU grad OSU fan hasn't chimed in yet(i don't think anyway). Well I have now.

More to come when I gather my thoughts on this game... can you say conflicted....

Btw I never thought the day would come when these two teams would meet on the field...yowza.

Western Michigan was who I said, not Eastern. I never even mentioned Central Michigan. I said out 3 biggest games were Toledo, Western Michigan, and the MAC Title (Akron). You, again, need to check your facts. Michigan, Northwestern, and Toledo were probably are toughest ranking wise, and Wolfe ran through all 3 of them.

Give us our 3 biggest games, and I will give you Wolfe's stats them.

Uh, G-F, Toledo was the top rated MAC team in the power ratings. Northern Illinois was second at #60. Miami of Ohio was #66.

Only two Big Ten teams were rated below #37. Western Michigan was ranked #78.

So, TSUN, Northwestern, and Miami were three of your top four games. I really don't see any point in continuing the discussion. I think you have a good back but I think he's going to find out what a real defense looks like when he plays Ohio State.

I join others in realizing that every MAC team plays lights out against the Buckeyes because it is their biggest game of the year. But then, whoever plays the Buckeyes plays their biggest game of the year. Tressel will not look past NIU. The team will not look past NIU.

I know you said it a couple pages ago, but I am still trying to figure out why you think that NIU is twice the team Miami was last year.

You do know they had TWO 1000 yd. receivers and a 1000yd rusher. Their QB who was lost all day threw for 3700 yds for the season and they had a lb that was a freak athleticly and I believe ended up getting drafted somewhere.

So once again I pose the question how is NIU twice the team Miami was.

And they finished 5th in the MAC.

Helluva team.
