Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Game

Wolfe has "the slight edge"? Surely, you jest. Wolfe is the real deal, and Sutton is just an undersized back who benefits from NW's goofball offense. Wolfe reminds me of former NY Giant RB Joe Morris, and I wouldn't be surprised if Garrett has similar NFL success. I was really impressed by his vision, ability to run between the tackles, bounce outside, and to accelrate in the open field; definitely not a one-dimensional "scat back". Ohio State knew that Wolfe was getting the ball on almost every play, and he still put up 300+ yards (187 rushing, 114 receiving) against them. If he stays healthy all year, he should put up 2,000 yards rushing, 500 receiving. Definite Heisman candidate. Impressive.

Best of luck to Wolfe and the Huskies the rest of the way.
not taking anything away from what you say. I would point out that the defenseive style played allowed wolfe to be wide open on the flares.

The second screen was a perfect call against the defensive call...

IMO, it depends on if you want to look at the glass as half full or half empty...either the D executed poorly in the open field and in their funneling or Garrett Wolfe is a special talent and made some plays on his own.

I think the kid is special...and I also think the D will be working angles and fits hard this week.

However, to take anything away from Wolfe is misguided imo.

Wolfe was great, but not at the hype the G-FORCE pumped him up to be. He's outstanding when out wide in the open field, but on runs in between the TEs he was so-so at best. I'd take Tyrell Sutton over Wolfe. If you re-watch the game, all of his long gains were when he was out wide and had huge--I mean huge--gaps to run through. However, his TD catch where he split the three defenders in between the 5 and the goal line was sick. I guarantee you those three are going to hear about it (if they haven't already) from the staff...

Completely agree. How the hell this guys goes through 3 of our defenders is beyond me. One guy couldn't slow him up so the other guy could make the tackle?

I agree with what you say especially the D angles. I just noticed that N01 wasn't covered when he went out a lot

He doesn't need to be covered close on a flare, screen, check...whatever you want to call the route. If we were in zone, someone has the flats...if it was man, one of the LBs had him man out of the backfield. We got caught in a blitz on one occasion for sure...when that happens, you just tip your hat to a great offensive call.

ok i even agree with that except for the almost 300 yards he put up against us. He was their best weapon by far and I would have had someone in his back pocket.

So you would trust one-on-one more than a zone coverage designed to funnel him into a phonebooth? Sorry, I will take my chances 2-3-on-one as opposed to one-on-one everyday.

That execution of the funneling is the issue imo...and the fact that he is a great player.

I think Wolfe is an exceptional player. I also realize that we were playing a vanilla defense with a lot of zone. But I know you know what Im talking about. ie. a team with one great player gets him dbl teamed or keyed on.
This guy was running through us like a hot knife through butter ,so I would have put someone on him. If he cant catch the pass he cant run it.

No not one on one necessarily but i would have told the D to get on him him if he leaves the backfield. heck a lineman can get in the way .

...and I'm saying I would never trust one player on him. Not AJ Hawk, not Chris Spielman, not Andy Katzenmoyer...

No chance.

If you haven't noticed over the past few years, we usually do play zone...it was not that vanilla beyond the lack of stunts after the 1st half.

He ran thru freeman and two others on his TD , easily

Sorry to interrupt, but I ran into Laguna before yesterday's game.

Physically, he looks like he could still suit up.

Also had the opportunity to meet wadc45 and tsteele316. Thanks for the ticket purchases.
