Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Wow our offense looks amazing, but our defense looked very vulnerable. Hopefully they take this game as a learning experiance and are more intense and focused for Texas.

Garrett Wolfe is amazing. It's even more amazing that with all of the hype that G-Force lived him up to be, I think he just about backed it up.

i miss seeing our three lb's out there. my opinions from the peanut gallery, b quinn 0 tds troy 3. gholston is a star. everyone else makes my heart skip. next week end will be scary! i was joking around with everyone in the bar today that our o looked like JT was standing on the sidelines with his PS controller deciding who he wanted to win the heisman. x or o? jk TS was so impressive to me with the way he checked off to the third and fourth receivers when he needed to. that guy is the real deal. BTW how bout the guy from GA that dropped the ball into the back of the endzone? WTF

i got my buddy to give me 180 rushing yards for g wolfe over under. i bet him 20. won by 9 yards. what a great back! HMM and Gforce hope yall had fun not being a dick but that was a real football team you played today. we aren't michigan!

Wolfe was great, but not at the hype the G-FORCE pumped him up to be. He's outstanding when out wide in the open field, but on runs in between the TEs he was so-so at best. I'd take Tyrell Sutton over Wolfe. If you re-watch the game, all of his long gains were when he was out wide and had huge--I mean huge--gaps to run through. However, his TD catch where he split the three defenders in between the 5 and the goal line was sick. I guarantee you those three are going to hear about it (if they haven't already) from the staff...

Just a few comments, if I may, from the other side of the fence......

Our defense is apparently not a good indication of what your offense will be like.. probably last year against good teams is a more accurate picture. As you all know, we gave up a lot of yards last year to Akron, NU, Michigan, etc. And we really didn't get any pressure on Troy Smith (happened last year too against Chad Henne). So I guess you'll have to wait until next week against Texas to see where the offense really stands. I was hoping for improvement on defense from last year but not sure we have it except that our tackling in general was better (once we were close enough to tackle!).

Make no mistake, Wolfe is the real deal. I was at NIU's game against Northwestern last year. Tyrell Sutton is a really good RB too, though it was a little hard to tell because our tackling was, well, less than ideal. Since I'm biased I'll give Wolfe the slight edge since I think he has more big-gain potential and he makes phenomenal cuts, not sure though, he had more room to run than I expected today.

I think Wolfe is among the top 5 or 6 RBs in the country, and I don't think G-Force overstated his case. I haven't seen Sutton enough to say, but he really looks good too from what I saw.

It's apparent that our secondary didn't belong on the same field as Ginn. The MAC tends to not be able to recruit the top defensive talent that could maybe cover him, if that's possible. Our lack of pass rush was a killer there too.

For whatever reason, NIU's O-line always seems to be better at run blocking than pass blocking. We almost always have a good O-line even against bigger schools, that helps our running game, but we allow some sacks due to pass-protection not being quite as good. Anyway, take it for what it's worth.

Enjoy the comments and good luck with the rest of your season. However, not to sound arrogent or like an asshole, but:
So I guess you'll have to wait until next week against Texas to see where the offense really stands.
We know exactly where our offense stands right now, they've proven themselves all last year and today's showing against NIU was not because of NIU's poor secondary; Troy, Teddy, Gonzo, Robo, Hartline, Small, Pittman, C Wells, and our OLine are just that good. Again not to say you were even intending this when you made that statement, but for whatever reason I still felt the need to at least comment on it. Again great game and good luck running through the MAC, you guys look prime for at least the GMAC this year.

Absolutely. I think he's the best "open space" runner in the country...get him outside and he's lethal. Keep him in between the TEs and he's not all that great (he had six carries for loss of yardage and one for no gain, and all but one of those were runs toward the middle).

some random thoughts...

NIU's second and third possessions netted -2 yards...

on the long screen play, #14 for NIU tackled Mitchell... should have come back... as it stands, the D redeemed itsself for the long pass play by getting an INT two plays later...

the turf gave way when Grant tried to cut; otherwise it's a 93 yard pick 6... too bad about the ref breaking his arm...

MoW is VERY good in space... he's really fast...

on Beanie's TD, he plowed one guy into the endzone, and carried three others on his back... that's almost not even fair for a true frosh... and he's HUGE... WAAAAY bigger than Pitt... no way is this kid only 225 pounds...

Brian Robiskie is gonna be a stud... very smooth... good routes, soft hands...

Jam-O missed the tackle in back to back plays after the missed 52 yarder... he left his feet both times... it cost him both times...

in the first half, Freeman, Laurinaitis and Homan looked the best at the LB spots...

A. Russell needs to be on the field every defensive play... they don't call him '100%' for nothing...

Mitchell was around the LOS several times in the first half, and had a couple TFLs by my count...

Nicol had two drops, but they were both tough balls... he'll be all right...

did i mention that Chris Wells is a beast? he was trucking his own guys!

how was that NOT a TD on the Nicol catch at the goal line?

he might not have the most talent on the team, but Antonio Smith gives great effort on every play... i suspect he gets the nod in order to motivate some of the more talented youngsters...

on nearly every big play for NIU, the LBers were on the ground... they were getting cut blocked like crazy... chalk that up to good coaching by NIU, i guess... i think a little experience will help them avoid the cut blocks...

Jam-O, IMHO, is not ready to be a starter... i think he'd be better served in the nickel...

noticed Donald Washington in there a bit... didn't see enough of him to make an assessment, however...

it seemed that some people were disappointed in Brandon Mitchell, but he was around the ball the whole game...

the TD by Wolfe was a thing of beauty... man, that kid's got more shake than shoot, i don't know what...

once again, every time Wolfe had a good run, the LBers were taking on O-linemen, rather than shedding the blocks... they need to work on that...

noticed Nick Patterson and Kurt Coleman out there, but didn't see enough to make an assessment... Nick seemed to be okay out there...

the D line is by far the strength of the defense... but that was to be expected... a lot of guys played today... Lawrence Wilson and Vernon Gholston are freaking beasts... Quinn was getting double teamed all day, and more than held his own...

nine different guys caught a pass... that is not only indicative of outstanding depth, but also of a QB who has come a LOOOONG way from the guy who was, by his own admission, "just out there ballin'" a year ago...

i don't even know who Derek Hardin is, but he was out there at the end... nice...

after watching it a second time, i'm much less worried about Texas than i was initially... sometimes you get one vibe the first time through, and quite another the second... the D was VERY vanilla, especially after the 1st quarter, and despite the rotation, they bent a little but really didn't break outside of a play or two...

the D needs to shore up the edge, and the LBers need to shed blocks a little better, but i suspect that there will be a ton more blitzing and stunts, etc. next week...

great opening test for the Buckeyes... i give the O an A+, and the D a B...
special teams gets a low C due to the missed FGs... other than that, covereage was good, and the return game was good...

the point was, they wouldn't have gotten the ball back in that position without that turnover... butterfly effect...

Not a valid argument. Who's to say that had we scored that NIU wouldn't have fumbled the subsequent kickoff or turned it over on their drive or shanked their next punt anyway or Ginn have a big punt return? You can't say that we wouldn't have got the ball back at their 20 (or maybe even better) had Wells not lost the fumble. That fumble cost us seven points, period.

but NIU could have run the kickoff back for a TD... i understand what you're saying, but it's a silly game... the fact is, we DID get the ball back on the 20 after the 3 and out, and the odds against us getting it back in that position after a TD are very much against... yes, it cost us 7 points... it also put us in a great position to score after NIU's ensuing drive was stonewalled...

I have to admit, I was wrong Garrett Wolfe is the best RB in the nation, IMO.

I'll be honest. I underestimated Garrett Wolfe too. Good Lord what a great performance.

Also, I got the opportunity to watch quite a little bit of the Texas game vs. North Texas and before any of my fellow Buckeyes start slitting there wrists thinking about next week know this:

Texas has a couple good RBs but noboby with anywhere near the apparent speed and elusiveness that we witnessed out of Wolfe. Just my opinion but I don't think it's too farfetched. The Buckeyes faced a hell of alot better team this week than Texas did! For the record, the longest run for a Texas RB this week was a 13 yarder by Jamaal Charles and they were playing shitty North Texas who were 2-9 last year I believe.

Our guys "basically" scored 28 points in one quarter (when was the last time that happened) and then they seemed to just switch it off and go into maintenance mode. Garrett Wolfe went wild and it only amounted to 12 points on the scoreboard. Our D can be proud of that IMO.

I'm glad that Garrett Wolfe doesn't play for Texas that's for sure. The Buckeyes have just as good a chance next week as the Horns do so everybody keep the faith and try not to bite your nails too much when thinking of Texas!

Go Buckeyes!!!

I think it is clear that Wolfe was the best back on the field yesterday. I'm not sure what that means. Pittman virtually matched him rushing, yard per carry, but against the NIU defense. NIU go to Wolfe with the screen passes and misdirections, Ohio State doesn't need to do that stuff with Ginn and his buddies. Also, Ohio State was not showing much yesterday in anticipation for Texas.

So, I think Wolfe did more than I expected and appeared to be the real deal. Well done to him.

Now, let's get back to another point when G-Force does return. Who surprised who? And, did Wolfe get pulled when the game was clearly out of reach. I think what we were predicting turned out to be very close indeed to what actually happened. Case closed.
