Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Kickers LB's etc.

Pettry looks good on kickoffs. It seems Pretorious is a little lacking in strength. I've mentioned before that this is a worry for next week.

I just looked at the D stats and B Mitchell led all tacklers today. Bad sign.

Freeman is going to be good, but I have to agree with the concern in our tackling and shedding blocks.

NIU success with tight ends and screen passes makes me think that the linebackers were a little soft.

But our receiers were everywhere and TS had all day. There's not a group of d backs that will hang with our receivers as long as the line gives troy time. Offense is back in Ohio Stadium!

We got a lot of players involved and I don't think we showed too much.

recap

The first game is in the books and it was not in my mind ever contested.

Wolf is something special. He made guys look follish. He was the best back on the field even though I thought Pitttman looked strong. He is probably a top 5 college back.

Smith, Ginn, Gonzalles, Pittman and the OL look to be on track be better than last year. Small appears to be a very nice addition to the offense. I liked the power from C. Wells but Pittman in my mind is still the man. Fumbles near the goal line cannot happen. I think the TE play will be good enough.

I cannot put the defensive performance in perspective. Wolf threw up some numbers but I think there is a good chance he is going to do that all year. The coaching staff will have to break down the film and make sure the best defense is on the field next week.

I think overall the gameplan was fundamental. I am sure there will be some upgrades for next week. It looks to be interesting...

Good win. Things need fixed, but we all knew that was going to be the case. All I have to say is if I heard that announcer call our colors garnet and gray one more time I was going to mute the television. Other than that, bring on the horns.

You can't blame JT for Zwick tripping over a lineman's feet and fumbling the hand off.

I can't? I just did.

It's his job to put his players in the best position possible to succeed. By unnecessisarily putting Zwick in the game in the middle of a drive, he deserves some of the blame just as Zwick does for coughing up the ball. Subbing for your QB in mid-drive in any situation other than an injury is BAD.

Agreed to an extent...but judging from the Dline calls, the plan was to bounce Wolfe all day. I saw more of a problem in the outside fits from the safeties and LBs. Mitchell may have led the team in tackles but I would guess he also led the team in missed tackles as well.

The fits and angles are the biggest piece of a young defense...look back at some of the early 04 threads...that is what we discussed mostly. However, the difference this year is a dominant Offense that can cover some of the defensive growing pains.

I expect this to be a dominant defensive unit.

Are you encouraged or discouraged at how our defense played today?

Do you think we'll look better next year against Texas?
