Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

I guess OSU has some sort of cult following that I don't understand. I grew up being an ILLini fan, but that quickly changed once I attended NIU and the football program turned it around. I went to two games at Akron last year and I couldn't believe how much OSU stuff I saw (probably 25% of the crowd). It just blows my mind.
no offense, but the illini are pathetic at football, so this isn't a very good comparison.

I grew up in Ohio but have lived in Illinois for over 25 years. The vast majority of people in the state of Ilinois really do not understand college football very well. They simply don't have the collective passion that folks in places like Ohio, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and the South have for the game.

Please don't think I'm talking about you personally; I'm making a general statement about most of the people that I've known for all of my adult life.

Did you go to OSU at some point in time?

No.

Are you a fan of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:state w:st="on"><ST1 ="">Ohio</ST1></st1:state> as well?

Well, I root for them over non-Ohio teams. But I can't name one player on their team. Unless AJ Hawk's brother is still the quarterback.

Who would you root for if the two teams played?

When they play, I root for Ohio State.

If you answer OSU, then you should be ashamed of yourself. I sincerely mean this.

I don't understand. You can only be a fan of the teams whose colleges you attended? Are you saying that people who haven't gotten to college, yet can't be fans of any college football team? And what about the people who either choose to not go to college, or, for whatever reason, are unable to go to college? Are they not good enough for college football?

I went to Case Western Reserve. I'll tell you what: just so you don't think I should be ashamed of myself, I'll root for the CWRU Spartans if they ever play against Ohio State. Hopefully, they make it off the field with 11 eligible players still able to play after halftime. But until the two teams play, I don't need to justify my choice of favorite teams to you or anyone else.

I guess what is emerging is a difference in culture. In Ohio, our culture is that we support our state teams. If Ohio University plays you guys, most of time I will support OU, although not this year because it stuffs up our SOS.

Supporting Ohio State is in our culture. We learn to support them as we sit with our fathers and grandfathers to watch games before we can walk. Heck, my mother kept an extensive scrapbook collection of Ohio State basketball articles from the 1960s to the 1990s and called Fred Taylor on the phone when she thought he got something wrong.

I once told a story about interviewing for a job in Houston. The interviewer laughed as he mouthed the words "THE Ohio State University". Then he said he knew others from Ohio State and he said it was funny that "you guys don't ever seem to leave there". He was right. We don't. Through thick or thin, wins or losses, moves halfway around the world or degrees at other schools, we remain Buckeyes and Ohio State football is the same to us as air is to most others.

That is all you need to know about us. All the rest is detail.

The "we treat football different in Ohio" theory doesn't wash if you go back to the discussion between the Miami(Oh) fans.

It is impossible to have a rational discussion with a Miami "fan". Ever since Little Ben went there, their ego has grown at an exponential pace. What they need to realize is that it will be another 20 years before they end up in the top 10.

when you have pictures of yourself as a 6 month old baby being held by brutus, you know you are a buckeye. i guess if i could say it in my own words most people would describe themselves as NIU fans or Miami fans but tOSU fans simply describe themselves as Buckeyes. its not something you root for its something that is a part of you, its who you are. that's the thing that most of the country can not fathom and never will.

Okay, how's this edit?

I understand what you are saying and I totally agree. College football is not the same in Illinois as it is in those parts of the country. IMO the NFL sucks, but I am still a fan of the Bears, but I pull harder for former NIU players than the Bears. Hell, I went to the Bears game last week to see Michael Turner play and burn the Bears for a big run before being pulled.

I went to Tuscaloosa to see NIU play in 2003 and it was one of the greatest weekends of my life. It would have been the same had we not won, but that was just icing on the cake. The place revolves around Tide football. It was amazing. I assume it will be the same at OSU, but I don't expect the same southern hospitality that we got down there.

Now wait a minute...didn't you see that Wolfe ran for 148 yards against Michigan and 245 yards against Northwestern last year? :roll1:

Saying something halfway positive about your opponent (even in jest) will get you thrown out of Buckeye Nation.:sneaky:

I get the whole Ohio football devotion thing. ND has fans all over the nation who attend other programs. Illinois is a basketball state, most programs have a far larger basketball fan base than football NIU is an exception. The Bears dominate what football fan interest there is in Illinois like OSU does in Ohio.
