Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

I think NIU runs Wolfe a lot early to gauge what he can do. If for some reason he's effective, we'll see a lot of him throughout the game, and we could see 25-30 carries (hell, Anthony Davis had 39 carries against us in 2004). However, if we limit him to say, 3-4 ypc, we'll see NIU air the ball out more often. I know that sounds pretty obvious, but stuffing Wolfe early would set the tone for the rest of the game for us defensively.

you missed the point... 100 total yards is not a big accomplishment when you are the focal point of the offense.

Yes but it's still against Ohio St. and he's playing on a MAC team. If he gets 20 carries for 50 yards and 5-7 catches for 50 yards then I'll admit that that's not very impressive but if he gets 15 carries for 75 yards and 2 grabs for 25 yards, I'll be impressed.

I will start this by saying he did have 112 yards recieving this game but....

9/24 Akron:

21 carries, 51 yards, 2.5 yard average, 0 TD's

So it is possible.
Look at our passing stats for that game, we threw for 485 yards.

See any connection? Think they were keying on the run?

Then look at our 2nd game where Wolfe runs for 270 some yards. If you hold Wolfe to 2.5 yards a carry, I will run around the Horseshoe naked.

Being down 21 in the 4th (having been trailing the entire 2nd half) probably had a little to do with airing it out... playing from behind usually ends up with more passing game.

And, from the looks of it, Wolfe got his avg. number of carries.

21 in the 9/24 Akron game - Season: 242 Carries divided by 12 games = 20.16

Anyway... if Akron had success keying on the run, don't you think Ohio State (who I'd bet is better than Akron) will have some success as well in that area, should that be the game plan?

If Wolfe ends up with 170 total yards against Ohio State I will take it a heartbeat. If Wolfe runs for 52 against you guys and we score 42, I will take it in a heartbeat.

NIU has a really good offense and you have a really young (yes I know talented) defense. Wolfe is going to run for alot, and we are going to score. 35-24 because we can't stop Ginn and Smith.
