it's tenuous, but imdb has this quote listed from episode 2.4:
"In my family, we say "A naked man has few secrets; a flayed man none". "

Additionally, in episode 2.6, their is dialog between Roose and Robb that has Roose saying:
"Theon holds the castle with a skeleton crew. Let me send word to my bastard at the Dreadfort; he can raise a few hundred men and retake Winterfell before the new moon. We have the Lannisters on the run; if you march all the way back north now, you'll lose what you gained. My boy would be honoured to bring you Prince Theon's head. "

Interesting developments. I'll be honest in saying I watch weekly, and it's a fantastic show. However, I don't follow as closely as others. Shit, with the accents, dialogues, numerous houses and territories, I'm not even certain what the characters are saying a quarter of the time.

I don't think there's ever been a character, books or television, that I so thoroughly hated at first, that I ended up liking equally as Jaime Lannister.

Only three more episodes. Shit's gonna get real. So much build up in the last few eps...I really hope they pulled it off. Could go from being a damn good TV show to one of the best ever. I don't think that's hyperbolic whatsoever.

Seems as tho I'm in the minority, but I'm really looking forward to seeing AFFC on screen next year. Tho not as action-packed as ASOS, there are some truly exceptional scenes, with some of my favorite dialog in literature.

Fuck I hope they can somehow get the entirety of aSoIaF on screen.

Next year wil be the second half of ASoS. Then the following season, the show will revovle around Feast and Dance simultaneously. Probably tack on a few more seasons right there.
By that time, if Martin hasn't finished the Winds of Winter, I will start getting very nervous about ever reading the end of this series.

IIRC I recently read somewhere that if for some reason GRRM was not able to finish the last book there are people that know how the TV series should end, but he would have whatever work he has done on the book destroyed.

I agree, and as I grew to like (or at least empathize with) the Kingslayer more and more I liked Catelyn Stark less and less. I base that on just reading the books, though.

Next year will also have a chunk of affc and adwd included. This season will cover at least two-thirds of storm.

I read that he told the TV show creators the ending he has outlined in his head in case he's unable to finish.

I'm a huge fan of the show and it's become one of my favorite TV series ever, right up there with The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and Homeland.

However, I've never read the books and really would like to. I've been told by some people that the first couple aren't as good and that the 3rd is where I should start. I'd like to enjoy the series in it's entirety but then again I'd rather not read 1700+ pages of lackluster material with plot twists that I already know about.


For those of you who have read the books, what do you recommend?

As the book series progresses there were many additional characters and plot lines introduced that I didn't care about nearly as much as the characters and plot lines introduced in the first several books.

The cynical side of me thinks that when Martin realized the series was going to be hugely successful he decided to milk it for all its worth and extend the series as much as possible with a ton of additional elements thrown in.

In light of that, I think the first three books are awesome while books 4 and 5 are basically just filler and don't really advance the main plot that you grew to care about in the first three books in any meaningful way.

So I would highly recommend reading the first three books and wouldn't worry so much about 4 and 5 (IIRC, the main criticism of #2 was that basically characters just moved around the map setting up the action for #3, but I may not be remembering that correctly). Then again, the HBO series does a pretty good job of following along faithfully so that would probably factor in as well.

I should also note in closing that I haven't read book five yet for various reasons: 1) It wasn't out in paperback yet when I got to it last year 2) I wasn't all that interested in rushing ahead after burning through the first four since I knew I would just have to wait for #6 anyway 3) Book #4 introduced a lot of new things that I didn't necessarily care about and I knew that book #5 would probably be the same 4) it occurs simultaneously to #4 so you basically know that nothing especially cool happens or the other characters would have heard about it.

After reading the mess that was a Feast for Crows and a Dance with Dragons, I wonder if Martin will be able to pull off a satisfying conclusion to the series in his final 2 (or 3) books. I think he's feeling the pressure and it's getting to him. Hopefully he gets his shit together because this series (book and tv) has a chance to go down as one of the best ever.

Read all of the books. There is so much foreshadowing that the show doesn't touch. Tower of Joy is great.

I know affc gets criticized, and some of it fairly, but I loved it. I'd also highly recommend The Hedge Knight Novellas. While not absolutely necessary, they make the world feel so much more real.
