Game Thread Game Four: #1 Ohio State 28, #24 Penn State 6 (9/23/06)

Classic:

Bucks is absolutely right. They will come out throwing. We just need to stop it...unlike vs Quinn. If we get pressure on Smith and he "freaks out", that is where we get our best chance.

Truth is, his post is actually in agreement with a post saying OSU doesn't need to run to be successful, which is correct. But, the whole "get pressure on Smith and he "freaks out"" bit kills me. I don't know if I've ever seen Smith "freak out." Indeed, he's always looked quite comfortable under pressure.

PSUBells says:

3-4 D better suited against a running attack which is a staple under Tressel.

Ummm.. yeah.. Ask Michigan about how well the 3-4 has handled OSU in the recent past.

Are any of the media outlets saying anything about the stadium "Red Out/Sea of Scarlet" yet?

Only scout.com (BN) and only a briefest of mentions in the Tressel and Paterno talk ... article"

Ohio State?s students begin classes this week and the student body will be out in full force for the Penn State game. According to various e-mails sent to Bucknuts.com, there is even an OSU student group that is trying to organize a ?red out Penn State? movement in response to the ?white out? in State College last year.

At this rate Zach I'd call this a non-story - which won't matter much as the crowd will be 98% decked out in scarlet and grey on game day.

I don't want this to become a shit-talking discussion, but the arguments of delusional fans this year are so formulaic its hilarious. Let's go through the list:

1) Make Troy Smith beat us with his arm
2) OSU defense is inexperienced
3) Ginn is overrated
4) OSU's competition is overrated
5) Tom Zbikowski is a golden gloves boxer

SU football Buckeyes 'better take it up a notch,' Tressel says

[FONT=PrimaSans BT,Verdana,sans-serif]Winning three preliminaries might have helped the Ohio State football team maintain its grip on the No. 1 national ranking, but with Penn State coming to town for the start of Big Ten play, OSU coach Jim Tressel said today, it's a whole new ballgame.

"Starting out with Penn State in league play is as challenging as it can get," Tressel said.

The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions shared last year's Big Ten championship, but Penn State gained the league's automatic Bowl Championship Series bid by virtue of its 17-10 win over OSU in State College, Pa.

On paper, at least, the table seems to have turned this season, with Penn State returning just four starters on offense and four on defense. The inexperience showed two games ago in the Nittany Lions' 41-17 loss at Notre Dame, a team that was dominated 47-21 by Michigan last week.

OSU only has two starters back from last year's defense, but its offense is a veteran, big-play unit led by a player whom many national observers are calling the Heisman Trophy front-runner, quarterback Troy Smith.

The Buckeyes have wins over Mid-American Conference favorite Northern Illinois, defending national champion Texas and Cincinnati under their belt, while Penn State has victories over Akron and Division I-AA Youngstown State.

Nevertheless, Tressel said his team knows Penn State is a proud, tradition-rich program led by Joe Paterno, the second-winningest major college coach in history. Plus, it's the Big Ten opener.

"Everyone in our locker room understands when you go to Big Ten play, you better take it up a notch," Tressel said.

Meanwhile, he said sophomore Steve Rehring will start at left guard in place of senior Tim Schafer, who got the nod the first three games. Tressel also said third-string quarterback Todd Boeckman suffered an ankle sprain in the UC game, though his status for Saturday wasn't clear.

The blue and white kool aid is flowing!

Granted, it's just that one guy, but sadly the mystique of being #1 really brings out the delusional opposing team's fans. The theme for the year assuming we keep winning.

This guy is priceless...

Quote: It's great to be optimistic, but let's at least repect out opponent a little. We're playing the #1 team in the country in their house in a revenge game. Without mentioning that our team has eexactly looked stellar this year. I would be might surprised if we were to win my 1 point, let alone 2 touchdowns.
The Buckeyes have hardly looked like a # 1 team.

Revenge game? Total BS and meaningless. Do you think for a minute that Penn State football players are not equally motivated?

Did that great Buckeye defense stop Northern Illinois's running game? Texas? Did that great Buckeye offense post 40 points on N Ill? Cincinnati?

Morelli is a QB who plays better against better competition.
How do you explain 11-27 against Youngstown state and a poor outing against Akron? His ND game was decent and Youbngstown is a good prep game against Tressel's style of play.

Smith is a QB that will thrive under a pass rush and wilt against disguised coverages and containment.

3-4 D better suited against a running attack which is a staple under Tressel.

The pressure is on OSU not PSU.

PSU 31 OSU 17
I especially like the comment about how well Morelli plays against better competition. He's started 3 games, played OK against Akron, got rocked by ND and basically sucked against YSU. So I'm assuming by "better competition" he means PSU's scout team last season.:slappy:

I am as confident of this game as any on our schedule.

The only way PSU pulls the upset is if Morelli plays like a pro. That is a tall order in a noisy Shoe. He does have the noise experience from ND going for him, but even against YSU he was only 11 of 27. PSU had five different ball carriers average more than 6 yards per carry last week, but Morelli averaged less than 6 yards per passing attempt. That is sad. But I havent' seen YSU, so maybe their DL is better than ours.

PSU has some serious speed in their receivers, but it will take a lot more than one or two long passes to pull this off.

I am trying to be objective, but short of a turnover filled quagmire I can't come up with the scenario where PSU pulls this off.

Did Northern Illinois score more points us than Akron did on PSU? Did the great PSU offense post 40 points on Akron? I-AA Youngstown State?

I have yet to see Smith "wilt" against any defense. And does this clown really think the PSU defense that gave up 41 to Notre Dame will be able to disguise coverages and provide containment?

:slappy: GTFOH.
